Sig problem edit

Hey Ed. I was wondering if you could help. On this guestbook, bits of my signature (mostly the timestamp) appear in green. I have no idea why that happens. I've had that signature since December and it's never done that before. I'm not even sure if it's the guestbook or the signature which is causing it. I've altered the sig slightly recently, but not to add green anywhere. It's very strange. Thanks. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:37, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

TPSing after a long time... My guess would be that someone above you hadn't closed their tags properly. ≈ Chamal talk 02:44, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Yep. User:Bugboy52.40 has an open font tag at the end of his signature. ≈ Chamal talk 02:45, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
OK. I'll have to ask him to fix it. Cheers. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 02:50, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
BTW Ollie, your sig is above the 255 character limit. Someone might kick up a row about that. ≈ Chamal talk 02:53, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
It's less than 3 lines of HTML, which is the limit (or so I was told). It's been my sig for almost 8 months now and no ones made a fuss yet. Oliver Fury, Esq. message • contributions 03:00, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
The length limit is 255 characters (see Wikipedia:SIG#Length). The signature box in preferences automatically controls the length, but since you're substituting a subpage that doesn't work with your signature. La Pianista and I had this problem sometime ago and we had to change it. Substituting is all right as long as it's within the 255 limit. ≈ Chamal talk 03:17, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

User:Spittlespat retired looks like he wants me to tell you guys. I'm leaving this here since I think almost everyone who knows him is watching Ed's page :) ≈ Chamal talk 14:52, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:Thanks edit

Your welcome. Had to do something last night at 2.00 in the morning, figured it may as well be something useful :) Also, there are three uncited paragraphs in Massachusetts at the moment; by our usual project standards then, she should still be start. Its not a big deal, just something to keep in mind. Also, I am trying to track down info on the battleship in the university library and here at home, so with luck there may be some extra offline citations coming in the next few days. TomStar81 (Talk) 20:50, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I missed them and undid myself before your message. :-) More information would be awesome; I don't have any more here at home or in my town's library. Any more from me will have to wait until I am back at school unless Breyer's Battleships and Battlecruisers 1905–1970 gets here through inter-library loan sometime soon (I asked for it a week ago...) —Ed (TalkContribs) 20:55, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

GA Review edit

Hello Ed. I know that you removed yourself from the peer review bit of WikiProject Novels, however as an editor I trust, and one who has not been involved with the article I'm about to mention, I was wondering if you'd be able to have either a quick check of the article or do the full Good Article Review for the Steven Erikson article. Myself and Truthkeeper88 think it is up to standard, however we've both edited it so we're probably not the best people for an objective look at the article. Also, thanks for the support vote in the RFA - I withdrew it because the consensus seemed to be that it was a bit premature. Best regards, Alan16 (talk) 23:34, 7 August 2009 (UTC).

Hola Alan. I'll try to get to it, but no guarantees. Like the choice though—fantasy for the win! :-) A preliminary look gives me these problems: only three sentences in the biography, bare URLs in the references, what makes refs 3, 8, 16, 18, 20, 24, 27, and 28 reliable?
Other sources you may be able to use are [1] (translation) and these (hopefully you can access more of them than I can...), but I'd suggest finding a biography or something about Erikson through inter-library loan; as of now I don't think it is quite up to the GA criteria. The article should be more about the author himself, I think, rather than the books he wrote—that would be better in a list of books by Steven Erikson, I believe. Cheers friend, —Ed (TalkContribs) 02:24, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Bonjour (sticking with the language theme, although I'm out after Spanish, French, & English) Ed. I think you're probably right, it could do with some work. Some of the references are pretty shaky really, but to defend it poorly, it is hard to find bios which aren't just rehashes of Wikipedia. I think it's on the GA nominees list, but I've started to do some work there - seemed like the sort of area I was advised to work in, in that disaster which is commonly known as my RFA - and there is quite a backlog so I don't see it getting picked up any time soon. So no need to rush to review it - I'll do some work over the next week or two, and post you a diff here, see what you think. The idea of an article for books by Erikson - would you leave a list on the page, or just do a {main|list of...}? Thanks, Alan16 (talk) 02:55, 9 August 2009 (UTC).
I'm out too, don't know anymore. :P Don't worry about your RfA; I ran back in January, and look at the trainwreck. Just keep plugging away at what you like to do, okay? No need to burn yourself out trying to meet the high expectations there. I've done what I like to do for the last seven months—write articles—and look at the people who want to me to run despite my lack of experience in "administrative-related areas". ;-)
Anyway, on to the main topic. The backlog is always long at GAN, but this is the longest I think I have ever seen it. Feel free to ask/post any questions you have when writing it; I'll answer them to the best of my ability. Re the list: your call. Other articles (like one I wrote!) have the list of books in them, so I guess it isn't a big deal. The list can't be 3/4 of the entire article though. :| —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I intend to keep going on the novel stuff - but I'll do some stuff at GAN, it's pretty interesting and if I'm bored I can just go looking for quick fails: will probably get rid of some of the backlog. I'll try and expand the Erikson article a bit, and see how the list of novels looks. Thanks, Alan16 (talk) 03:41, 9 August 2009 (UTC)/
Do what'cha like, is what I'm saying. GAN reviewing is actually pretty fun, and it's certainly a great help to all of the writers. Might I suggest Template:GAList2? —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:13, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
That could make things easier. So far I've been using {GAList/check|y/n/?}. Basically the same thing, but that template would save a lot of typing. Thanks, Alan16 (talk) 04:24, 9 August 2009 (UTC).
Re: Steven Erikson -- just to be clear, I don't believe it's ready for review yet, but noted the review request on the talkpage and asked Alan16 about it. Also, in my view, the sources you note above are Youtubes and thus not RS. I'll open a thread on the talkpage for this. Thanks. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 18:39, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Re: Thanks (Alaskas) edit

You're welcome.

Query: would your "large cruiser" project include the Gneisenaus? I realize that they're on the cusp, perhaps "light battleships" -but their 11-inch main battery and high speed strike me as reflecting the DNA of Seydlitz etc. Solicitr (talk) 15:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Just to note, Ed and I discussed this a few months ago (the thread can be found here). I for one disagree that Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were built in the tradition of the WWI battlecruisers; the 11-inchers were only a stopgap both politically and industrially, not an attempt to secure speed through lighter guns. Parsecboy (talk) 15:25, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm attempting to use the armor as criteria for inclusion/exclusion at the moment. Both the Dunkerques and Scharnhorst/Gneisenaus had very good/above average armor protection—both above and below water—and were designed to stand up to heavier guns. The Alaskas, 1047s, Kronshtadts, B-65s, Os and Stalingrads all only had enough armor to defend against ~8 in shells, if that. —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:21, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

We need your help edit

We now have a new article in the Iowa class battleship FT pool: USS Missouri grounding incident. FT rules state that we have 3 months to bring this article up to Featured Status and add it to the FT train or we lose FT status, and as you may imagine I am not hot to have that happen. Any help you can provide to get this article up to FA status ASAP would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, TomStar81 (Talk) 07:11, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Nicolo Giraud edit

I believe I have addressed all of your points besides - "Is it saying that Giraud was most likely the brother of one of the two women being courted?" That information is not available because Giraud's name does not come up with the information. I don't think Demetrius Zograffo knew of Giraud when the information was recorded so there would be no way to determine if Giraud could have been a son with one of the women or with some other woman. Have responded at the FAC. Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 23:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Design B-65 cruisers edit

I finally completed adding more information to the article. I pulled as much additional info as I could from the sources I have, but I'm still not sure if it is detailed or comprehensive enough to have a chance at FA, but I think it might could pass A-class if you feel it should be given a try. Cla68 (talk) 10:29, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey Cla, that looks great. Thank you very much! I may try A-class eventually, but I don't have time to deal with reviewer's comments at the moment—perhaps in a few weeks, unless you would like to nominate it (feel free! :). Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 02:24, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Note this discussion on this topic at the CombinedFleet.com message forum. I've already PM'd Mr. Kingsepp to ask if he has any of the translations of the Japanese sources in soft copy. Cla68 (talk) 06:21, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I have added a reply there, and it looks like I have to work on B-65 some more :) —Ed (TalkContribs) 05:34, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Whoa, can you confirm the last post by Frido? —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:18, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I'll check Lacroix and ask Frido about it if I can't confirm what he's saying. Cla68 (talk) 04:36, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, Lacroix confirms that the B-64s were the designations for the Amagi-class battlecruisers. Lacroix has some additional information that I missed before that I need to add to the article, especially more detailed info on the Circle 5 and 6 construction program timelines. Cla68 (talk) 10:02, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

(out) - oh really, that's both interesting and highly annoying. Thanks for all of your help with this article! I'll try to get to fixing it up after this weekend. —Ed (TalkContribs) 19:32, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Just a note, I am still trying to get to this. Many demands—most IRL, some on-wiki—are sapping my time... —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:05, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Me too. No hurry. Mr. Kingsepp sent me the translated pages from the Japanese book about the cruiser's specs. If you send me an email I can reply back with the doc attached. Cla68 (talk) 04:57, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

SoDak edit

In regards to this edit, I should remind you that per WP:LEAD, the lead should summarize events in the article, so you need to either add the paragraph into the article elsewhere as well or move it entirely. It is something interesting, but it might verge on WP:TRIVIA. -MBK004 03:54, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking in the 'awards' section, but I couldn't fill in the blank here for a new section name: 'awards and ___'. I know that it is bordering on trivia, but it seems important enough to me to warrant a mention in the article. Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:02, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Feel free to look it over anytime. I've finished the Great Patriotic War section, though I may add a paragraph of analysis. I'm trying to keep it a complete article, since it gets a fair number of hits, and am doing it a section at at time while keeping the article relatively intact at all times. It's too important an article to be "under construction". This is going to take weeks, I think. I'm using only two bios for his pre-Premiership life, but once we get into him as Premier, there are a lot of books and references out there, and it is going to be a pain. Worth doing, though.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to look over that part ... this is turning out to be by far the longest article I've ever done. I'm estimating 120K all told, but that is par for the course for a world leader. But I really only need you to comment on the war section, though feel free yada yada.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:07, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
*Headdesk* this was one of those "well, I'll do it tomorrow when I get up" deals. Except I forgot. My apologies; I will actually take a look at it tomorrow (after class). Will leave myself a reminder too so I don't fail again. :| Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 02:52, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
The reminder worked! :-) "After class" means around 6–7 eastern tonight. From a quick preliminary look, however, that article looks like it is shaping up very nicely. Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 17:55, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks on both counts.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:12, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
No problem, dude; I've completed my look-through and didn't see anything. I did give it a little copyedit and left a couple notes on the talk page; please take a look at both! Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 22:44, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Probably the most complicated and most important article I've ever worked on. I replied to your points on talk page.--Wehwalt (talk) 22:54, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

GLAM edit

Mine's arrived, although I suspect yours might take longer to travel across the ocean. They were all books of very high quality old PD photos; Hope you get your books about planes and other military stuff. Somehow along the there must of been a change of plans because I ended up with a book of photos of women's fashion with comments by Lee Lin Chin, although not a AWM one. Ah the surprises of life YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 06:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

LOL. Isn't that what you wanted? ;-) —Ed (TalkContribs) 11:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

RfA. edit

Now. What do you say?Juliancolton | Talk 01:46, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Already told him I will support.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:05, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
JC, I was taught in eighth grade to not give in to peer pressure. :P In all seriousness, I'll talk to the people who have been pushing me to run for awhile (MBK and Tom) and see what they think. —Ed (TalkContribs) 02:52, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, what happened to your response of not now due to school a few weeks ago? I do see something that might get you an oppose: Template_talk:Did_you_know#List of Hospital ships sunk in World War I, did you remember that you can't approve your own hooks? -MBK004 03:19, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
You last 2,000 contributions look good, and it has been eight months; regardless though there is room for improvement. I am of the opinion though that as it stands right now you could pass an RFA provided you answer your questions and explain your self-promotion incident smartly. Ultimately the decision to go rests with you; if you feel your ready then we can nominate you now, if you would like to wait we can do that too. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:43, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I'm in school now, meaning that I have more time—16 hours of school and 10 hours of work < ~40 hours of work in the summer.
The short answer to the question "did you remember...": yes. The long answer: I was thinking that I could approve my own alts' for some reason...I really don't know why I thought that, and it was a rather stupid error to make—the whole point of the DYK promotion system is that at least two or three people view a given hook before it goes on the main page, so it should have been obvious. At least it was caught before it went anywhere. —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:49, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and re a nom: I'll make a decision tomorrow, as it is way too late for me to make one now. —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:50, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Your record of content building is exemplary, you hold a position of community trust (coordinator of MILHIST), but you need a really good statement to be able to get past what happened during RFA#1, plus explaining the recent self-promotion incident as Tom said. That being said, I would be honored to co-nom you again. One more thing, how do you feel about taking up residence at CAT:TEMP and cleaning it out? ;)
Also, completely off-topic, I just realized that someone that I went to high school with (had a class with and who signed my yearbook) is notable and has her own article here. -MBK004 03:55, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
While we're on the topic, Brian Bixler was in my gym class when I was a freshman in high school. I found his article just a day or two ago. Parsecboy (talk) 14:37, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

(out) - "need a really good statement": for sure. That was ridiculous on my part. I really don't like rereading some of my responses in that RfA...they're embarrassing, to say the least. I hope that I have adequately explained the self-promoting incident above... and no, I don't think I would operate at CAT:TEMP much, sorry. :-)
Wow dude, that's cool. Cut out her signature and sell it on E-bay! ;-) Alright, it's time to sleep on this. Cheers all, —Ed (TalkContribs) 04:14, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

And I'd thought you'd retired from that sort of work at WPNovels... Anywho, there was a reason for posting here. I'd encourage you to go for an RfA: I'd be delighted to support and/or nominate and/or something else. Also, not spoken in a while, so hi. Alan16 (talk) 22:14, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm sorry, the page is still on my watchlist and it's simple to type in WP:NOVO and copy/paste {{subst:Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Outreach/Welcome|signed=~~~~}} in. ;-) I still haven't decided yet if I will run—mainly because my primary occupation is article building, not the "admin areas"—but I will soon. I'll try to come to one soon; I don't want to be another Brett Favre. —Ed (TalkContribs) 22:20, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
And just look at the articles you've built! You go to NMU right? So the chances of someone whose uni team is the Wildcats becoming like Brett Favre is very small - I'd say you're more likely to become a Ryan Leaf. ;-) Alan16 (talk) 22:31, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, all those FAs and still terrible prose: "... but I will soon. I'll try to come to one soon ...". Sad. :-) Oh, and thanks for that Alan; I'll remember that next time you ask for help. ;-) —Ed (TalkContribs) 22:42, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Okay all, I've made a decision: I'm going to wait a little longer so that I can get more experience at DYK. Seeing as I will primarily be using the bit there (to transfer hooks into queues, etc.), I probably need some more time with actually putting updates together. I've already put together two in two days, so perhaps sometime in a week or two? Cheers, —Ed (TalkContribs) 17:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Stalingrad class battlecruiser edit

On August 29, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Stalingrad class battlecruiser, which you recently nominated. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Re: Forgetfulness edit

Thanks for the kind words, Ed. Drop me a line when you're ready for your next rfa :) TomStar81 (Talk) 05:16, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

When you get a minute, can I trouble you for a favor? According to this, USS Missouri grounding incident racked up around 10,500 views while up at GYK, which means its eligible for a statistics position. Would you mind adding the article to the list? TomStar81 (Talk) 04:32, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome, I will lol, and done. :-) —Ed (TalkContribs) 15:30, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

possible bad links on the North Carolina page edit

That's all (and that's remarkably good for a page with over 100 links on it ... I was expecting to find stupid things like names of ships linked to dictionary definitions and such, as you can find things like that all over Wikipedia ... so I'm impressed that I found so few things to change). -- Soap Talk/Contributions 01:27, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
