Maria Nicolette Vergara (born September 14, 2001) better known as Colet, is a Filipino singer. She is the second eldest member, main vocal, lead dancer & lead rapper of the Filipino girl group bini.[2]

Early life and education

Maria Nicolette Vergara was born in Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines to a family of five siblings.[3] She attended Japan Philippine Institute of Technology in Bulacan as a scholar, where she graduated along with her co-member Maloi.[4]

Colet had a normal teen life attending school. Ever since she was a child, she developed a background in singing. She used to join her school's singing groups and participated in singing competitions to further enhance her vocal skills. She also had a talent in dancing, and used join her school's dance group where they compete in inter-school dance competitions.[5]

Career

2018–2020: Star Hunt Academy trainee

In 2018, Colet auditioned for Star Hunt Academy (SHA) in Laguna.[6] She was one of 250 aspirants to undergo a five-day boot camp and was selected as a trainee in early 2019. Under SHA, Colet developed her skills in singing and dancing under Filipino voice coaches Kitchy Molina and Anna Graham, and dance coaches Mickey Perz and Matthew Almodovar. She also trained under the intensive Korean training system with the help of MU Doctor Academy, where she learned Korean practices and disciplines in singing and dancing.[7]

Colet joined her fellow trainees in performing at various ABS-CBN mall shows and other events across the country. She also appeared at the 2019 National Youth Commission's FitFil: Youth Against Drugs event as one of the youth ambassadors. The trainees were also invited to perform at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games thanksgiving celebration.[8]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Colet continued her training in quarantine along with her co-trainees inside Camp Star Hunt to ensure their safety.[7] On October 10, 2020, Colet was one of the last eight members of the Star Hunt Academy Girl Trainees to graduate from the Academy and was officially announced as a member of an idol group.[9]

2020–2021: Pre-debut as Bini and official debut

In November 2020, Colet officially became a member of the Filipino girl group Bini, which released the pre-debut single "Da Coconut Nut".[10]

On December 4, 2020, Colet and her fellow Bini members signed an exclusive contract with Star Magic.[11]

During their pre-debut era, Colet and her fellow Bini members performed "Da Coconut Nut" and other song and dance covers on various ABS-CBN shows, including It's Showtime, ASAP Natin 'To, and Magandang Buhay.[12]

The group officially debuted on June 11, 2021, with the release of their debut single "Born to Win" during the two-part event Bini: The Launch.[13]
