Early life and education

edit

Ricalde was born in Lemery, Batangas, Philippines to a family of four siblings. Her family originally lived in Lemery but moved to General Trias, Cavite.[3] Her father was formerly an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW).[citation needed] She attended Japan Philippine Institute of Technology in Bulacan as a scholar, where she graduated along with her co-member Colet.[4]

Ricalde started singing when she was three years old, as she loved to sing on karaoke. She joined her first singing competition when she was seven years old, and joining competitions helped her gain more experience and confidence in singing. She also likes to dance and started dancing as a child. Her skill in dancing helped her perform both singing and dancing during her school's events and competitions.[citation needed] Maloi also joined the Choral Team Melodic Symphony Children's Choir of the San Vicente Ferrer Parish based in General Trias, during which the team won three gold medals during the 2018 Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod International Choral Festival in Kuala Lumpur.[5]

Career

2018–2020: Star Hunt Academy trainee

edit

In 2018, Ricalde auditioned for Star Hunt Academy in Laguna.[6] She was one of 250 aspirants to undergo a five-day boot camp and was selected as a trainee in early 2019. Under Star Hunt Academy (SHA), Ricalde developed her skills in singing and dancing under Filipino voice coaches Kitchy Molina and Anna Graham, and dance coaches Mickey Perz and Matthew Almodovar. She also trained under the intensive Korean training system with the help of MU Doctor Academy, where she learned Korean practices and disciplines in singing and dancing.[7]

Ricalde joined her fellow trainees in performing at various ABS-CBN mall shows and other events across the country. She also appeared at the 2019 National Youth Commission's FitFil: Youth Against Drugs event as one of the youth ambassadors. The trainees were also invited to perform at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games thanksgiving celebration.[8]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ricalde continued her training in quarantine along with her co-trainees inside Camp Star Hunt to ensure their safety.[citation needed] On October 10, 2020, Ricalde was one of the last eight members of the Star Hunt Academy Girl Trainees to graduate from the Academy and was officially announced as a member of an idol group.[9]

2020–2021: Pre-debut as Bini and official debut

edit

In November 2020, Ricalde officially became a member of the Filipino girl group Bini, which released the pre-debut single "Da Coconut Nut".[10]

On December 4, 2020, Ricalde and her fellow Bini members signed an exclusive contract with Star Magic.[11]

During their pre-debut era, Ricalde and her fellow Bini members performed "Da Coconut Nut" and other song and dance covers on various ABS-CBN shows, including It's Showtime, ASAP Natin 'To, and Magandang Buhay.[12]

The group officially debuted on June 11, 2021, with the release of their debut single "Born to Win" during the two-part event Bini: The Launch.[13]
