Research Fellow in Linguistics - I work in language documentation and description, grammar, languages of Nepal, and gesture, but I'm also a general linguistics nerd.

#lingwiki and endangered languages
editAn ongoing focus of my Wikipedia editing is improving pages on endangered languages. We have far more Wiki pages like Abon than Wagiman, and that needs to change. I'm also interested in ensuring we have more diverse biographies of linguists, and improving general pages about linguistics. All of this work is part of a larger group of linguists interested in improving Wikipedia, who work under the #LingWiki hashtag across social media, and real life editathons.
SOAS GLAM #lingwiki 2015-2017
editIn 2015-2017 teamed up with a group of SOAS people to bring monthly #lingwiki events to campus. We were funded by Wikimedia UK to feed contributors at these events. The aim of lingwiki at SOAS is to improve the descriptions of endangered languages for a general audience. You can see the original grant application I wrote with Elia and Charlotte: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Improving_endangered_language_content
Current #lingwiki project I'm working on is linking the PARADISEC catalog to the relevant language pages. So far I've done the A languages.

CoLang2016
editIn June 2016 I teamed up with Gretchenmcc to teach the course "Wikis and Wikipedia for Endangered Languages" at CoLang in Alaska. She's the one who got me into #lingwiki in the first place back in January 2015, so it was really cool to work together. Gretchen has a summary of the edit stats and links to the materials we used this blog post. The materials are all Creative Commons licensed so feel free to use them yourself!
My Wiki history
editI used to occasionally add little things without an account. I created this account but didn't really start using it until I decided to make my research bibliography on Yolmo an open-access Wikibook.[1] With my limited Wikiediting skills I then got involved in #lingwiki events organised by Gretchenmcc. I've run and participated in #lingwiki events online, organised 2 live meet-ups in Singapore (27th of March 2015 and Tuesday 2nd of June 2015). We had over 12 edits make contributions in 5 languages (English, Hindi, Bangla, Indonesian, Chinese). I organised monthly ediathons in London. Now I'm a participant in monthly Wikipedia editing events at La Trobe University.
