March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

18th Infantry Division (United Kingdom)

Hello:

The copy edit that you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article 18th Infantry Division (United Kingdom) has been completed.

This sentence appears in the lead: "The 18th Infantry Division was formed in September 1939, as a 2nd Line duplicate of the 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division."

"2nd Line" is used here, but "second line" is used elsewhere in the Background section in a foot note, and further in the section is written as "Second Line" several times. I looked online to try to resolve this inconsistency without success. Perhaps one of your sources will help with this.

23rd Div number

Hi

Thanks for the extra to the 23rd (N) division, it was little more than a stub when I first saw it, and I nearly had a relative in that formation, 11th DLI briefly then back to the 8th.

I had a note in the text about the choice of number for the division, 23rd not 63rd, and even thought there isn't a reference to that decision in any history I could find, I think I built a logical case for it, which may even have been the original one, who knows? OK, it wasn't explicitly referenced, but fluff!? Seriously, this may have been the case for a number of other WW2 2nd line Territorial divisions, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th and 38th, do you know if any of those has a reference to the numbering decision? I wouldn't say that commenting about a potential link to the First World War division was fluff, but tenuous and linking the two as related appears to be unsourced.

In the First World War, initially only the regular divisions were numbered. The Territorial Force had names "Northumberland Division", for example. The next numbered divisions came from the New Army. When those numbers were allocated, and the decision was made to deploy the Territorial Force, the territorials were numbered in the order they were deployed. Those First Line numbers were kept when the Territorial Army was created in the 20s.

When the order was given to expand the Territorial Army, per F. W. Perry, it appears no outline was given on numbering or naming schemes from division down to battalion. It appears they picked what they wanted, resulting in a mix of New Army numbers, First World War Second Line numbers, and some just continuing the overall number sequence or filling in the gaps.

With that said, it appears that only the 42nd and 43rd divisions used their First World War era 2nd line numbers: the 66th and 45th. The 44th's second line during the First World War was the 67th, but when they duplicated during the Second they chose the New Army Number. Likewise, for the 15th, 18th, and 38th; they don't match the original 2nd line numbers. Roger Hesketh, in his work on the Fortitude deception plan, notes that when the Army starting disbanding divisions in 1944 they renamed several to match numbers and names the public should have been familiar with, such as the 38th Welsh; famed for several notable battles during the First World War. One could speculate this was also part of the random numbering the divisions opted for ala the original note in the article of the First World War's 23rd Division being rather famous.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 20:44, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

For the 55th, we need to whip the OOB and commander list into shape; make sure the page numbers are correct and so we can also remove the over-indulgence in sources and weblinks. If there is anything else in there that can help expand the article, that would also be great.

After that, I intended - after finishing off a few more Second World War focused articles - to give the 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division a shot, assuming I can locate the required sources; so whipping the OOB and commander list into shape with the sources you have as prep would be awesome :) Outside of that, I think I am going to have my hands full for the time being on articles. • How much do you want to have mentioned in the OOB? Becke has details on when all of the 1914 division units left for France which could be added to the 1914 OOB. For the 1916–1918 OOB, amalgamations can be listed (though I've written about the reduction of battalions in the prose section already). Kges1901 (talk) 21:09, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

I think that would be a valuable piece of information to add to the OOB. My last collaboration on a First World War article resulted in the 38th (Welsh) Infantry Division, I believe the same level of information should be sufficient in the OOB. Kges1901 (talk · contribs), does Becke state which artillery units were transferred from the division during the fighting at Cambrai? Coop doesn't mention it, and it is one of the factors raised by the court of enquiry.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 16:38, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
