This is not a talk page, rather it is a draft of text that may be copied to Talk:New York in the fullness of time. It contains signatures only as placegetters, these and the "Requested move" template will be re-expanded (by subst for the template and four tildes for the sigs) if and when it goes live for discussion, see User talk:Andrew/NYRM July 2017#Where to now for details. Meantime, please discuss on its talk page.

Requested move 5 July 2017

edit

If you came here because of a notice from RMCD bot saying "There is a move discussion in progress..." it lied... this particular RM is not yet proposed and may not be. But please don't go away, instead discuss on the talk page. TIA

Rationale

edit
This section should not be modified after the nomination (unless with agreement of all nominators).

There are two reasons this move is proposed.

1. Improved reader experience.

  • Many readers search on New York wanting New York City, and load a large unwanted page as a result. The DAB loads in a far shorter time, particularly important for mobile and low bandwidth readers.
  • Readers searching for New York wanting New York State are also helped if the article page they want has an unambiguous name.
  • Many mislinkings are created by editors who assume that the destination of a wikilink to New York is the city. Correcting these mislinkings occupies a large amount of editor time which would otherwise be available to improve the encyclopedia.

2. Compliance to official policy and guidelines. It was decided by RfC that the state is not the primary topic of New York. This article title therefore cannot be used for the article on the state. (And it should be noted that the guidelines appear to be correct in this, see reason 1 above.)

Primary topic

edit

It has been suggested that the primary topic of New York is New York City. A second RM is proposed after an interval of time still to be determined (but one year has been suggested) to determine this issue.

Survey

edit
Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in the appropriate subsection with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles. (Please, only !vote in one of the subsections.)

Nominators

edit
Normally nominators do not !vote on an RM, as support is assumed. This section is to allow the possibility of multiple nominators. If there is only one, it will be removed.
If you *'''Support''' as nominator then you are indicating that you agree 100% with the rationale. Even then it is completely optional. If you would prefer to !vote normally instead, feel free to do so.
  • Support as nominator. Also support a voluntary one-year moratorium on further RMs affecting these three page names, but explicitly allowing a further RM to determine whether NYC is the PT after that time. Andrewa (talk) 17:57, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Closing

edit

This RM should only be closed by an uninvolved administrator. Page mover and non-admin closure is not recommended by the proposers.

This should of course be done following the closing instructions. In particular, appeals to the no consensus clause made during the discussion should be ignored. This clause becomes relevant only if the discussion produces no consensus, and that is for the closer to determine.
