Weimar Republic

Can the country data template for the Weimar Republic be altered to allow the use of the merchant flag too. Thus {{flagicon|Weimar Republic|civil}} would proudce and that would link to the Weimar Republic article. Mjroots (talk) 17:13, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Well, it's the {{editprotected}} template that puts the page into Category:Wikipedia protected edit requests, and that category is patrolled by many admins, so that's how it attracts attention. Template:Country data → Template:Flag data – A large portion of sub-templates aren't countries. In addition, this would allow a central template for all types of flags to be used with the {{flagicon}} template. {{flagicon}} could be used to get out of using deprecated image syntax on 1981 Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final and other related articles. Under the current circumstances, an editor would need to put a football flag under a "Country data" template to avoid using deprecated syntax which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Technical discussion

@Jon Kolbert: There is a large category tree structure under Category:Country data templates. See Category:Country data templates by type of entity, where we already have "country data" for cities, continents, international organizations, etc. Why not just add a category for "country data" for sports teams? Are you proposing to rename this entire category structure by replacing "country" with "flag"? That would involve moving a lot of categories to new names. Fore example, Template:Country data Budapest would move to Template:Flag data Budapest. At first glance, this seems like a lot of work. wbm1058 (talk) 17:22, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

@JJMC89 and SMcCandlish: I'm not seeing any Lua modules used by this template system. The main trick used by this system is that it constructs sub-template names by using parameters that specify only a portion of the sub-template name. The above uses Template:Country data Albany, New York behind the scenes. I believe that all pages using this template system will link to File:Flag of Albany, New York.svg, that would be these articles (I'm not going to worry about the many talk pages linking to that flag). If all of them still show the flag after I move the sub-template for Albany, then I don't believe I've broken anything. The system should just follow the redirect from Template:Country data Albany, New York to Template:Flag data Albany, New York. Template:Country showdata generates the documentation. It uses {{str right}} to lop 13 characters off the front of "Flag data Albany, New York".

• {{flag|any, New York}} → Template:Country data any, New York
• {{flagicon|any, New York}} → Template:Country data any, New York
  • {{Str right|Flag data Albany, New York|13}} → any, New York

This works fine with "Country data" because that's 3 characters longer than "Flag data".

We need to either patch Template:Country showdata or move Template:Flag data Albany, New York to an alternative name that's 3 characters longer. It should be pretty easy to change the instances of {{str right}} to something that works with prefixes of varying lengths. E.g.,

• {{#invoke:String|replace|Template:Country data Albany, New York|^Template:%w+ data |||false}} → Albany, New York
• {{#invoke:String|replace|Template:Flag data Albany, New York|^Template:%w+ data |||false}} → Albany, New York

Not ideal to parse the same Lua module 36 times (converting the whole Country showdata template to Lua would definitely be a good thing), but it's definitely not necessary for any new naming scheme to have the same number of characters as the current.

Alternatively, I don't know if this has been considered, but a subpage format like Template:Flag data/Albany, New York would, among other advantages, make it trivial for the documentation template to get the entity name using {{SUBPAGENAME}} (or {{#titleparts}} in order to work with the few templates with slashes in the name, like Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol). Thanks, SiBr₄. Some good stuff to consider. Looking at Template:Country showdata, I see that on 16 May 2014 you extracted the template name from the page title so the {{{templatename}}} parameter is no longer necessary (but kept that parameter for now), while creating a tracking category for templates with {{{templatename}}} Category:Country data templates with templatename parameter, which was speedy deleted on 10 May 2016 per your request, because "Tracking category no longer needed". You also removed the templatename tracking category, but the {{{templatename}}} is still there (36 instances). Is it safe now to simplify that template by removing this deprecated parameter? Though in the case of Country data Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, it is necessary to specify the templatename, to override the Flag data default. If we use {{#invoke:String|replace| in lieu of {{SUBPAGENAME}} then we don't need {{{templatename}}} and remove the hard-coded |13}} which allows for flexible-length names that simply match the pattern and can include a / in the name. wbm1058 (talk) 15:18, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

Changing {{BASEPAGENAME}} to {{PAGENAME}} (which includes subpages) would fix the slash problem in Country showdata, so that |templatename= is no longer necessary in the Trentino template. I probably used BASEPAGENAME at the time to exclude the "/sandbox" suffix of sandbox templates, although the result is that their automatic examples actually invoke their parent templates instead of the sandbox versions, so even for those PAGENAME would be preferable.

|templatename= isn't used in any other template (I checked by running through all of them in AWB). Trentino is also the only template for which this all matters, since the only other templates with a slash in the name (other than "/doc", "/sandbox" or "/testcases" subpages) are redirects (namely French Guiana/Guyane (France) and Kosovo/Kosova) and therefore don't use the documentation template. So the Lua pattern %w+ data allows for any set of ASCII alphanumeric characters followed by " data", thus the phrase "Flag data of" isn't matched. While I was warming up to its grammatical correctness, the original request was for simply "Flag data" so I've moved Template:Flag data of Albany, New York back to Template:Flag data Albany, New York. wbm1058 (talk) 12:02, 23 October 2017 (UTC)

You're right. I forgot the Albany template had been moved to "Flag data of" when I made the edit to Country showdata, and thought the change itself made the alternative proposals (which assumed the length of the prefix had to stay at 13) moot. FWIW, due to the limitedness of Lua patterns (to be exact, their lack of alternation and inability to apply the ? quantifier to groups), it doesn't seem possible to match "Flag data of" with the same pattern as "Country data"/"Flag data", meaning two separate pattern replacements would be required in order to work with the "of" naming scheme. Technical issues aside, I'd definitely prefer "Flag data" to "Flag data of", as I'm not seeing any advantage of correct grammar above briefness for data templates that are never directly used, and I've seen few to no other non-article templates use such naming. How to change the default size of a country data flagimage?

How do you change the default file size for a Template:Country data flagimage? Asking because the default size for most is 23px (plus 2px for the border) but some countries' are smaller (such as Denmark), which results in misaligned flag icons in columns. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 08:27, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

I believe that's the default thumb size for flags. I guess I'd need to see a specific example for clarification, because the country data templates are all over the place and some call one group while others call a different one... {{flag data}} has a |size= parameter, so you could set it as {{{size|23px}}}. {{Country showdata}}, which is used in places like {{Country data Denmark}}, just uses thumb. I tried that for Denmark in its sandbox and it worked for what I wanted, but a side effect was that it removed the size adjust parameter altogether. Specifically, an example of the problem can be seen here. Note how the UK and Danish flags are not the same width. Template-protected edit request on 25 October 2019

Please consider adding a pthe field to be used as default by Template:Flagg for each country when creating flag links. This would enable the same code to be used uniformly across a list of countries, without having to rely on editors to make sure they put the in the specific countries that require it. For instance:

• {{flag+link|Economy of|China}} would link to Economy of China
• {{flag+link|Economy of|United States}} would link to Economy of the United States
• {{flag+link|Economy of|India}} would link to Economy of India
• {{flag+link|Economy of|United Kingdom}} would link to Economy of the United Kingdom

… instead of:

• {{flag+link|Economy of|China}} to link to Economy of China
• {{flag+link|Economy of the|United States}} to link to Economy of the United States
• {{flag+link|Economy of|India}} to link to Economy of India
• {{flag+link|Economy of the|United Kingdom}} to link to Economy of the United Kingdom

Take a look at the sandbox versions at Template:Flag+link/testcases, and definitely add other possible variations if you want to test things out. Even if you don't know much about templates, it should be pretty easy to figure out the pattern on the testcases page and copy/paste to make new ones. After trying a few combinations, finally added a couple more conditional statements to the function for the cases in which "the" is already in the prefix, or that the target page uses the country name in the argument rather than the standard ISO one. Now, does that need to be replicated for each flag template, or is it automatically incorporated into the {{flagg}} module once it goes live? I think in one of my previous versions, it was taking in "IE" or another ISO abbreviation and rendering "Ireland" or the equivalent full country name. That's what I was trying to make it do, but now I honestly don't remember. Maybe having the template accept ISO country codes or full country names is too much to ask. Edit request 25 January 2024

Description of suggested change: At the 2024 IWBF Asia-Oceania Championships they had a composite team that played under the Asia-Oceania Zone. To avoid ugly red Template:Country data AOZ marks everywhere, I need flag data for the team. They played under the File:International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (emblem).jpg but a blank white logo would be okay.

With this particular template family/group, it would require making an entirely new template. That being said, it has made me think about some of the internal structures of a few of these sports-related templates, which I will look at to make changes like this a bit easier in the future (especially if one-off teams end up being repeats). Set the default size to be 25x17px to account for the fact that border is set to empty.

Currently if two {{flagicon}} are used, but one is empty, it looks like this:

Follow-up edit request 6 April 2024

In actuality, when the function is called by {{flagicon}}, providing a default for the size parameter does not work since a blank sized is always passed in. In addition, MediaWiki:Minerva.css#L-39 means setting the width to 25px does nothing on mobile.

Description of suggested change:

Instead of trying to replicate the border by expanding the width, manually add a transparent border with TemplateStyles.

Tests:

To help with testing, I created a redirect to the sandbox at Template:Country data /sandbox so these changes can now be tested directly with {{flagicon}}.

File:Flag placeholder.svg is already used, but unlike other flag icons, the border is disabled because it's not transparent like the image. From a code search, all skins used on Wikipedia use a 1px border, so skin compatibility isn't an issue. – BrandonXLF (talk) 16:45, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

@Ahecht That was my original idea until I found out about the max-width set at MediaWiki:Minerva.css#L-39. Description of suggested change:

Based on the above discussion with @Ahecht, the best course of action is to simply fix the initial edit request. An {{#if}} statement should be added to account for the fact that {{flagicon}} passes in a blank size by default. The issue with mobile should be resolved separately with MediaWiki talk:Common.css#Interface-protected edit request on 11 April 2024.

Specifically, make it so that the country data of Ambazonia doesn't redirect to the Southern Cameroons, but rather goes to the current rebel entity of Ambazonia, as that is what the term is mostly, if not always used for.
(Simplified more: Change the country data of Ambazonia to be separate from the Southern Cameroons; make it's flag data the Federal Republic of Ambazonia's flag data.)
