"China" and POV

Two options There are two Chinese states: the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China. For this template to be named "China" and display the flag of one of those states is to choose sides in the Chinese Civil War. Note that "X of China" pages are either disambiguations to "X of the People's Republic of China" and "X of the Republic of China" or they are about Chinese civilization (e.g. President of China.) -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 14:50, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Note that this template does not link to China when used with the standard flag templates; it correctly links to People's Republic of China. The template is named "China" because it is also used for thousands of instances to articles that use "China" in the name, such as those found in Category:National sports teams of China. True But the display is still "China" and the name of the template is "China" as well. If not all, then virtually all instances of "China" referring solely to the PRC (except in the case of quotations or documentary sources) should be changed. If they refer to the geographic area, they should probably be "mainland China," or the state they should read "People's Republic of China." The Template:Country data China shouldn't be used or should be some kind of disambiguation itself. Can you point me to some articles that are entitled "X of China" that refer to the PRC exclusively? -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 17:38, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, no, I doubt I can. But I am certain of one thing — there are undoubtedly many thousands of instances where editors have linked to China instead of People's Republic of China, and these flag templates aren't to blame for that. (If anything, the flag templates help the situation because they generate a wikilink to the PRC article.) I've also seen the same thing where editors link to Ireland (the island) instead of Republic of Ireland (the nation) without bothering to see the difference. Dab I've no doubt that there are many instances of "[[China]]" where "(the) [[People's Republic of China]]" would be appropriate. I have personally disambiguated several hundred instances of "China" and it would in fact help if we changed the text of this template to read "People's Republic of China." I agree that changing the template's name or radically altering the text to some disambiguation would not be wise now as "{{flag|China}}" is so prevalent, and that is why I am using WP:AWB to change those (5,000+) instances now. What are you trying to fix? The link alias-army line has no effect. There are no templates that automatically look for an "army" variant. As for the image, it is currently unused as an icon image anywhere on en.wiki, so why does it need to be added to this template? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

The image is currently not used only because the same image is used with an (incorrect?) name Image:Peoples Liberation Army Flag of the Peoples Republic of China.svg. I was considering to replace all of these images with the more correctly named image, but then I thought that it could be added into the country data template first. --Jhattara ^{(Talk · Contrib)} 08:50, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Flag of Tibet and Inner Mongolia

The flags shown here are pro independence flags and not used by the autonomous region, is it proper to shown the flags unter the country data of china, can someone do a alternative with the name of the region and a chinese national flag and guangxi. Jiangyu911 (talk) 19:23, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

That part is contained in the documentation subpage. The page is kind of misleading, because it claims to list templates for the autonomous regions of China even though Template:Country data Tibet creates a link to Tibet (the article on the geographic and ethno-cultural region) rather than Tibet Autonomous Region (the article on the Chinese administrative division). A separate {{flagg|xxd|Tibet Autonomous Region}} template using the Chinese flag could be created for the autonomous region.

FOTW says the flag currently used in the Inner Mongolia template was a flag of Mengjiang within Inner Mongolia in the 1930s (WP has a separate article on its flags). I can find no mention anywhere of it being used to represent the whole of Inner Mongolia, even unofficially. I've changed the flag in the template back to the PRC flag, though I think File:Flag of Inner Mongolia.PNG should just be deleted from Commons (it has made its way into several other WPs as a "flag of Inner Mongolia", with even an article on the flag at arWP); an SVG version of the Mengjiang flag exists anyway, with a less misleading filename. Hello, It is said here "Country data templates are also available for four of the five autonomous regions" but show a template of Tibet with the "snow lion flag", which is banned in Tibet autonomous region and can therefore not represent the autonomous region. So i would like to change the template showed here to template of Tibet Autonomous Region with a Chinese national flag, so it can represent the region and make it clear that the autonomous region do not use this flag. thanks

Partly done: I have added the Qing flag, but I'm holding off on the ROC flag for the moment. It was adopted in October 1928 (source), and my first instinct is to say that since it was in use for less than half of 1928 it should not be displayed until 1929. Why is name forced to be "China"?

At United Nations Security Council the list of permanent members should have "People's Republic of China" in the "Current state representation" column. All other entries have the country's official name, for example "French Fifth Republic". Unfortunately this template detects the specific name "People's Republic of China" and forces it to be simply "China", so {{flag|China|name=People's Republic of China}} yields People's Republic of China, not (as expected, and as documented) People's Republic of China. I've reverted the change that forced this. The idea is that you can use {{flag|People's Republic of China}} to achieve the same effect as [[China|People's Republic of China]]. Duplicate flag with different shade

@User:Primefac: There are two different files of the flag of the Republic of China (1) and the (2) and that makes the inconsistency of the flag on so many articles. I strongly recommend to change the (1) into the unified (2) in Template:Country data China and Template:Country data Republic of China (1912–1949) to avoid any confusion. I just did a quick bit of searching and, while shading is mentioned according to the relevant law, the ROC Ministry of the Interior, provides recommended shading "for reference only", and the shading of that flag looks to be different to both of the files mentioned above, so I do not see any consistency here. - CHAMPION ^{(talk) (contributions) (logs)} 01:36, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Revisiting this after undoing some unexplained changes from one colour variant to another. I can find no indication anywhere that there are two flags, that it was ever changed or that there’s any variation. There does seem to be a lack of specificity in the sources though. E.g. this from Flag of the Republic of China looks both authoritative and comprehensive but just says 'red', One reason for the lack of a clear definition may be Taiwan’s status, which means outside of Taiwan the flag is little used and so there has been much less need for it.

The variants seem to arise from different processes, such as one is RGB red, others are Pantone or CMYK, for printing. But WP is an online not print publication so we should use RGB colours, in particular RGB red. That is best for us and also best for printing, if anyone chooses to print a WP article their printer should produce the best results from an RGB image. 2004 flag

Looking at the flags used in this template, the 2004 flag stands out as oddly coloured for no obvious reason. And looking at the claimed source, it does not match, and looks more like the others before and after it. There probably is no need for four different versions of the same flag, all with varying degrees of unexplained colour variations. They all seem to be sourced to the CIA factbook, so probably should be the same. Variations may have arisen as they were viewed and downloaded, on e.g. PCs with different colour settings.--JohnBlackburne^words_deeds 04:48, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Add: Extra link to "Qing" for Qing dynasty flag

Change:Maybe change the year from 1929 to 1927 or 1928 based on based on when the KMT "took control" of China (See: Republic of China (1912–1949)), but regardless of that, also use the normal version of the ROC flag instead of unsourced variant with changed colours currently used.

Sorry so much! I was actually going to just fix the historical flags but thought i should "fix" the many "accidental doubles" I thought I saw! The page preview showed both the "navy" variant and working "naval" example usage, so I thought it was fine.
