Ruth Budd, William Kuinka, Dirk Keetbaas, Symphony Six
edit... that in 1951, Canadian musicians Dirk Keetbaas, William Kuinka, Ruth Budd, Abe Mannheim, John Moskalyk and Steven Staryk were denied access to the United States under the suspicion of leftist activities?
Created by Big iron (talk). Nominated by Skr15081997 (talk) at 15:55, 24 June 2014 (UTC).
- All articles new enough, long enough, well sourced. Hook is interesting, neutral, inline-cited, but at 208 characters excluding markup, needs to be trimmed. Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 09:28, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- ALT1 ... that in 1951 the Symphony Six – six Canadian musicians including Dirk Keetbaas, William Kuinka, and Ruth Budd – were denied access to the United States under suspicion of leftist activities?
- @Rwxrwxrwx: Thanks for the review, the hook has been trimmed but you should check the articles for copyvios.--Skr15081997 (talk) 09:56, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- No copyvios found. Rwxrwxrwx (talk) 10:29, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- The hook fact needs to be cited in each article, per DYK rules. I added it to the Dirk Keetbaas article. Yoninah (talk) 23:55, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: I have added citations to the hook fact in William Kuinka article.--Skr15081997 (talk) 09:22, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Skr15081997: I saw your reminder on my talk page. When I skimmed the Dirk Keetbaas article while checking for the hook cite, I noticed close paraphrasing, and was waiting to find time to check the text against the sources. I just did that, and fixed the close paraphrasing as well as mistakes in the text, and added some better refs than 1000 Questions About Canada. Please give me a little more time to check through the other two articles. By the way, the Symphony six article is totally unreferenced, and also a victim of close paraphrasing. Perhaps you want to fix that up in the meantime and make it a quintuple nom? Yoninah (talk) 11:47, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- The Symphony six article needs 9524 more characters to meet the 5x expansion criteria. I am accepting this as a challenge.--Skr15081997 (talk) 12:19, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- Great! This is an excellent source of information: Begins with the Oboe: A History of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Yoninah (talk) 13:51, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- I have reviewed Template:Did you know nominations/Shrenik Kasturbhai Lalbhai for the QPQ. Rest were only nominated by me.--Skr15081997 (talk) 10:13, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
- Update: Skr15081997 has posted a 5x expansion of Symphony six to add to this nomination, and I am reviewing/editing it to get it in shape. I will also double-check Ruth Budd and William Kuinka articles for close paraphrasing issues. Yoninah (talk) 09:39, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- 2nd update: Symphony Six has successfully undergone a 5x expansion. I added it to the ALT1 hook (I removed Steven Staryk since he's not included in this nomination, and to keep it under 200 char). Skr15081997 is now reviewing/improving the other nominated articles so this nomination can pass. Yoninah (talk) 19:11, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
- A couple of notes: first, Symphony Six is a few hundred characters short of a 5x expansion. The article had 2,381 prose characters prior to its expansion, and requires 11,905 prose characters; it is currently at 11,564. Another 341 are needed, and should be well within reach. Since hook length for multi-article hooks is 200 characters but can exclude all but one bold article title from that total (my rule of thumb is that the longest is counted), hook length here is fine. (You could include Staryk if you wanted, but it's more effective if you don't.) Skr15081997 made a few edits to the other three articles in the two days after Yoninah's post on July 24; are they ready to go? Yoninah was going to check the Budd and Kuinka articles for close paraphrasing, too. If all that's done, then it's just the Symphony Six further expansion that's needed before a new reviewer is called in. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:19, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
*Question: Symphony Six was completely unreferenced before we started, and the principals are all alive. Can it qualify as a 2x BLP expansion? Yoninah (talk) 20:34, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
- Current status:
- Symphony Six: As of August 6, the article stands at 13,434 chars, which is a 5.6x expansion. New enough, long enough, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook ref verified and cited inline. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 21:02, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Dirk Keetbaas: New enough, long enough, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook ref verified and cited inline. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- William Kuinka: New enough, long enough, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook ref verified and cited inline. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Ruth Budd: New enough, long enough, well referenced, no close paraphrasing seen. Hook ref verified and cited inline. Good to go. Yoninah (talk) 22:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
Final status: No QPQ needed for non-self-nomination of Ruth Budd, Dirk Keetbaas, and William Kuinka. QPQ done for Symphony Six. I'm passing the first 3 articles as good to go. Since I was involved in the expansion of Symphony Six, I leave it to another reviewer to sign off on it. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:25, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
Ready with ALT1. Symphony Six isn't quite a 5x expansion according to DYKcheck but for the sake of a few characters let's give it the benefit of the doubt (I was hoping the Symphony Six would be a superhero team with radioactive instruments that help them fight crime, but they are just a bunch of suspected lefties :().
