Portrait of Andrea Doria as God of Sea edit
- ... that Bronzino's portrait of Genoan admiral Andrea Doria as Neptune (pictured) originally had him holding an oar and not a trident?
- ALT1:... that the stiff wood in Bronzino's portrait of Genoan admiral Andrea Doria (pictured) may stand for an erection?

Long enough, new enough. No close paraphrasing, copyvio or plagiarism detected in the sources I could check. Neutral. QPQ partially done. My only real problem with this at the moment is that I'm not sure about the sources support for some of the conclusions (for example, does Greek Religion really support "He chose to be depicted nude as the "God of the Sea". Poseidon's main domain is the ocean, and Doria was a successful admiral" or just "Poseidon's main domain is the sea"?). The English title of the painting and the article comes from where? I've also shifted mentions of Poseidon towards Neptune in the article as that is the Italian title and Genoa would have more in common with the Roman tradition than the Greek. The two hooks are both fine (but Poseidon may need changing to Neptune in the first hook if you agree with my change) Belle (talk) 16:19, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
- Belle, it is the same god, the one is the Greek name the other is the Roman name. I chose not to specify. I have seen this painting sometimes titled as Posseidon. ALT2 ... that Bronzino's portrait of Genoan admiral Andrea Doria as God of Sea (pictured) originally had him holding an oar and not a trident?- I think, per WP:COMMONNAME, Belle is probably right. The majority of art critics seem to use the name Neptune (as in, the post-amalgamation Neptune, not the original Roman deity before he was fused with Poseidon), rather the non-specific God of the Sea. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:07, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- Here is the reference saying he chose to depict himself as nude...READ HERE it is from this book -."THE ART OF THE PORTRAIT, Masterpieces of European Portrait Painting, 1420-1670; Taschen". Taschen.

- Thanks, Crisco 1492. I'll give this the tick as soon as the QPQ review is complete. This sentence still needs citing or removing though: "Neptune's main domain is the ocean, and Doria was a successful admiral." It's not a problem in itself (though, in fact, we don't need telling these facts as they are are either general knowledge or elsewhere in the article), but its position implies that somebody has said this is why he choose to be shown as Neptune (It sounds like a very reasonable explanation and I'm sure if somebody asked me to say why he chose to be depicted as Neptune I might have come up with that, but unfortunately I am not a reliable source; or, sadly, as anybody who knows me will tell you, reliable in general) Belle (talk) 07:45, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
