YouTube is jjj very popular, but at the same time the technical specifications are only poorely documentated by YouTube itself, almost ridiculous.
Therefore I appreciate people, who have tried to document on various blogs and other sites, what YouTube itself didn't. But among them are also many rumors.
a mistake. It would probably have a database and an entry type system sort of like the one already in use by wikipedia. It would also be possible to add text and hight quality images in a not conspicuous place, like under the video screen, that users would be able to access for more information. The additional content could even be another video itself, so that users could shift to that video if they felt like taking the video in another direction. Basically it's a very ritch multimedia contect that anyone could edit with a bit of practice and would include all types of myltimedia like videos, pictures, and sound.
For example, visitors would be able to watch a video and see something on the screen like an ipod that would flicker when a mouse is pointed at it that would take the viewer to a new video or page about that item. Users would also be able to connect parts of videos together if they feel like a smooth transition could be made from one video to another. Basically it would be like watching television that would never end because the videos would always lead to somewhere else, but the user would be able influence the overal direction where the video goes.
In another example, the software would analyze the users mouse movement patterns to determine the users interest and preferences and accordingly decide which videos to play inserting articles and sounds at sounds at particular times to enrich the experience. In a later version the user would also be able to provide imput or feedback through the keyboard and possibly microphone / camera.
Framerate
They contain various framerates:
- Sources from NTSC countries tend to have 29 fps.
- Sources from PAL countries tend to have 25 fps.
- Sources uploaded from mobile phones feature various framerates somewhere inbetween 10-20 fps.
- And other exotic framerates are present as well.
Conclusion: The YouTube re-encoding engine does not seem to change the framerate of source-material!
Picture Size
320x240 seems to be the maximum.
If videos are uploaded with a lower size, YouTube seems to leave their size untouched.
I came across videos featuring those aspect ratios:
- 320/256=1.250
- 240/180=1.333
- 256/192=1.333
Conclusion: Not entirely clear to me. It must be something like this: If larger than 320x240 downscale (possibly distort aspect ratio), otherwise leave as is.

Apple TV/YouTube announcement
Being a long time wikipedia browsing-addict, I'm only just now getting to know the editing process. I'd love any suggestions, help, or criticisms (i don't even care if they're uncivil criticisms, honestly) regarding the information I added about the Apple TV's upcoming support/integration(?) with YouTube. I also added the fact that because of said announcement, all current content will be transcoded to the H.264 standard, while new content will be automatically encoded in H.264. I have a few sources, and I'm working out which are best to use and how exactly I go about setting up a footnote anyway. So soon after this announcement, there's not a whole lot that can be said beyond what I added, as much about the arrangement remains unknown. I think it would be good to follow the developments so we can flesh out the details (and potential effects on YouTube in terms of popularity, financial issues, and potentially even a large scale switch to H.264 video format(seems unlikely)) In the interest of full disclosure, I'm an unrepentant Apple admirer, and though I always try to present things fairly, I'm only human. So please, please, please tell me/change any perceived bias in my updates. Any more currently public details I missed, as well as good source material would also be appreciated. And a brief postscript: if this is the wrong place on the discussion page for me to have posted this, please go ahead and move it, and I'll gladly apologize and admit my ignorance. Most Featured
Does anyone know if there is a verifiable source to check how many times an editor has been featured. I know Lasse Gjertsen has been on the front page at least four times, and possibly five. Cannot find a source to verify this however. After a length of time it no longer shows on the "Honours". Raerth 21:43, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Only some videos honor's are taken away. If some kids watch it, they see some one in the video might say some tiny swear, or something weak like "Crap" and flag it inappropiate. If Youtube feels it's needed, they then theive the video all honors.
Inconsistent listings under "Fame beyond YouTube"

- Reasoning: The above list is more formal; but for consistency's sake, we might as well drop any pretense of listing human beings. We indiscriminately list YouTube serials with actual people. By focusing on usernames, everything on the list becomes of the same type: an entertainment venue. A list is not really necessary because you can just go to the youtube front page for the most popular videos: featured, most viewed, most discussed, top favorites. If anything, all we should have is a mention of that somewhere in the article. Chainer29 05:01, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

YouTube Banned in Morocco
Since May 26th 2007, users from Morocco are unable to access YouTube.com, the ban was not confirmed yet by the authorities.

Technical stuff re: honors, # of views, etc.
If anyone can find/has found technical information as to how much the "Honors" fluctuate, how often the view count is updated, etc., it would be educational to add. As someone following a particular serial, I've noticed that it seems to update about once an hour, and that after an honor ceases to apply (e.g., what was "Most Viewed (today)" is not necessarily the most viewed the following day), there doesn't seem to be any lasting record of the status achieved, the way there would be with a music single. I believe the edition of Kevin Nalts' name to the Sharing Revenue section should remain. He made a bold move to be included in the program by starting the NAPPY campaign where thousands of fans hounded YouTube execs and was successful. The only source I have is the video announcement:

Technical Difficulties

- Go into your QuickTime MIME Settings and tell it not to associate itself with Flash files. In QuickTime 7, this is found by going Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime Preferences -> Browser (tab) -> MIME Settings -> Miscellaneous. Standards for YOUTUBE Celebrities
The standards for so-called YouTube celebrities has become totally absurd at this point. We need to develop standards and protocols for dealing with these users. 4) DO NOT create an article for yourself and reference it here for means of advertising.

recent changes in the YouTube Categories
Hi There :)
about 2 days ago, youtube removed a part of the video-section that referred to the categories in a way that allowed browsing videos with selected properties.
an example... i liked to browse ``top rated - this week - Howto & DIY´´. or i also liked ``top favourites - today - comedy´´. this is no longer possible! the only thing that you can get in a way so that it is sorted by categories is videos that youtube employees have selected.
this is a shift from an user-driven broadcasting system to a corporate-driven broadcasting system, from community to tv-station.
capnoawesome (not that important, he was simply the first one to do it) made a video about this, asking people to rate it up and spam it with comments and make video responses. in his oppinion the changes would ``kill the little guy´´.

this change in youtube marketing strategy and the wave of criticism it causes might deserve being mentioned in the main article.

- Something is deffinately happening. The ability to search by category seems to come back. In YouTube's blog entry regarding that, they were caught in a lie. Many people seems to be unhappy about that.
- (Basicually YouTube states that "It was actually not our intention to take this helpful function away from you." AFTER having sent many emails to people who wanted the function back, that said "We've recently made a few changes to our site. We've added some new features and replaced a few others. The search by category feature is no longer available. This has been replaced by the option to search based on "Relevance", "Date Added", "View Count" and "Rating".")

I keep on posting a link to a site called DownloadYouTube that lets users download youtube videos,but wikipedia user "esanchez" keeps on removing it. esanchez, also is posting the incorrect youtube terms of service. He says users cannot download youtube videos. But if you all go to YouTube's terms of service here:
It clearly states this:
"If you download or print a copy of the Content for personal use, you must retain all copyright and other proprietary notices contained therein".
So you are allowed to download youtube videos as long as you follow the terms of service.

This is what it says on youtube's Terms of Use. "Content on the Website is provided to you AS IS for your information and personal use only and may not be downloaded, copied, reproduced, distributed, transmitted, broadcast, displayed, sold, licensed, or otherwise exploited for any other purposes whatsoever without the prior written consent of the respective owners".
Near the end it says "WITHOUT THE PRIOR WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE RESPECTIVE OWNERS". So you can download the videos as long as you get written consent from the video owner.Daabomb
Recent Abuse of the Flagging System
Users have signed up just to flag videos. The most prominent example would be "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series" by LittleKuriboh, which was flagged simply because users don't like him. The abuse of the flagging system should be noted in the article. Ggctuk 11:48, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Language
Is there any way to report harassment and abuse on YouTube? Some user on there called me a "mother******" and "shithead" and other sorts of foul names just because I prefer the American Godzilla over the Japanese one. There was a reference in the article which stated that Youtube is available in the languages of a number of countries - the list included Ireland. In fact the YouTube site for Ireland is available only in the English language and not in the Irish Language (Gaeilge)Coolavokig 10:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Link 16 not working/ User influence
Link 16 isn't working... it's supposed to link to an Orlando Sentinel report regarding the YouTube online users' support of Obama, Clinton, Biden and Paul, but the link doesn't go anywhere. Moreover, and this is a purely personal note, I'm not quite certain that Biden receives a ton of internet attention on YouTube... Is there any reason that this isn't mentioned in the article? I would add it myself, but things like this are usually posted sooner, so I figured that it had already been posted and removed. --I'm wondering the same thing. I came here to "check the facts" after seeing a number of the YouTube debate vidoes conveniently edited out or unable to download properly. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but I'm guessing everyone's politically embarrassed about the candidness of the YouTube questions and wants to forget about it. Bollocks I say.

Source for "New York Times reports anti-U.S. attack videos"
The link currently provided for the source of the information within the section entitled "New York Times reports anti-U.S. attack videos" ("Anti-U.S. Attack Videos Spread on Web". New York Times. October 5, 2006.) leads to a page that requires a login and a password to read the intended article. This renders the source useless to those Wikipedia users who do not wish to register with the New York Times website. On the encoding of audio in YouTube videos.
In this article about YouTube it states that YouTube streams its videos with the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 codec in monaural format once videos are uploaded by registered users. But it is possible to include audio in uploaded videos as stereophonic. This user did so; and my point of this comment is to change what it says in 'Audio format' in the headline 'Technical Notes'.

- You can have YouTube videos with stereo sound, but you have to convert the file to the FLV format yourself if you want that. Two programs that do this (on Mac anyway) is ffmpegX and VisualHub. On Windows I believe Riva's FLV encoder will do the trick, as evidenced by this video on YouTube. M.U.G.E.N a copyright infringment?
Would someone please remove M.U.G.E.N as being a copyright infringement, because it's not. if the author were to actually read the legality concerning M.U.G.E.N creations, this would be obvious to them.
If it was being listed only to describe one of the things YouTube has problems with, then that's alright, but the article seems to consider M.U.G.E.N (specifically characters created for it) to be a copyright infringement, which is untrue. Influence on other sites
A request was made to better reference this section, which I removed, here's why: One of the ways to definitively reference this section would be to simply list a bunch of websites with "tube" in their name--we all know they exist and why--however, this would open the door to turning this article into a not-so-subtle promotional platform for such knock-off websites, which we have been trying to avoid. - I completely disagree with your assertion that "we should [not] attempt to further reference this section". I agree that simply listing *tube websites would be a mess. It would also be original research. But because that one particular method would be incorrect and problematic does not relieve us of the burden of supporting our assertions with quality references. Yes. LittleKuriboh was the 8th Most suscribed person of all time with 40,000 subscribers, (although Youtube never recognized him as such)and deserves to be mentioned on the Youtube article.

Phishing?
As a frequent "YouTuber", I've noticed that several comments are appearing, as a form of spam email, using randomly generated usernames (This even happened to a video of mine, which it was quickly marked as spam)
Is it worthy of a mention in the article?

Areas with YouTube Blocked
According to www.thegreatfirewallofchina.com, China has blocked YouTube. Delutube
I have noticed a link to Delutube, Deleted YouTube Video Viewer, a site suggesting they can display deleted or flagged YouTube videos. Skeptical that it is real and suspicious it's nothing more than a hoax, I have tried it probably 20 times over the last few months, but have never had any success--some random video shows up instead. Has anyone ever had this work at all? (Anybody popping in to say, "yes" who has zero Wikipedia editing history will be suspect as trying to perpetuate this apparently bogus website). If there is no confirmation from anyone it actually works, I think the section on it ought to be deleted. Plus, isn't it against YouTube's policy to offer access to deleted videos? A little info on YouTube
The time limit is anything under 11 minutes. Here's a video I made that's 10:59 minutes long http://youtube.com/watch?v=rhV4L3T3BMc . The audio on the flv files is 22,000hz 64kbps ABR or VBR but 32,000 - 44,000hz 64kbps CBR seems to process the fastest. Lots of downtime
Recently (last two weeks?) Youtube has been unreachable for me very often, as it has been now for about half an hour. I'm from the Netherlands but do North-American users experience the same? I just get a blank page instead of the page I am requesting. This might indicate that they are having technical or more probably bandwidth problems, and if this trend continues and other sources start reporting about it I think it is worth a note in the article. Uploading
When i was trying to upload a video thats 9 minutes long, it worked, and when i trie to upload a movie above 10 mins, they said i couldn't. But i saw videos that were longer than 10 minutes posted on youtube before. So how do i upload it?

- I made a similar proposal on October-November 2006 (Talk:YouTube/Archive 2#Infobox Website). I added two infoboxes: {{Infobox Website}} and {{Infobox Company}} because there is only one article about the two entities (the website and the company). Mets501 didn't like having 2 infoboxes so he reverted my edit (see history). So I don't say he was wrong, but eventually I think neither infobox suit. We should create a specific infobox (like {{Infobox Dotcom company}}) for those kind of companies (except if they are sufficiently famous to have two separate articles (like Google and its main website: Google (search engine)). This new template would be a blend of the 2 infoboxes and could be applied to a lot of companies (probably many of those categorized in Category:Internet companies). 16@r 17:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Copyright case
Viacom has demanded that YouTube remove a video that it claims to own even though it may itself have infringed on the original copyright. The video was originally posted online by Christopher Knight, a former candidate for a seat on the Rockingham County, NC board of education. In it he poses as a kind of Star Wars warrior vowing to protect local education from the federal bureaucracy. Soon afterwards, the video appeared on YouTube and then on VH1's Web Junk 2.0 -- without permission from Knight. Nevertheless, Knight said that when the clip appeared, he was "delighted" to be recognized by the cable channel and made a copy of the segment and posted it onto YouTube. He soon received a message from YouTube saying that Viacom had demanded that the clip be withdrawn and that if Knight continued to violate copyrights, his account would be shut off. In an interview with the U.K. tech site The Register, Knight said, "Viacom says that I can't use their clip showing my commercial, claiming copy infringement? ... This was never official, but special previews of the 'Eragon' movie were shown before it actually opened (showing animation of the dragons etc.). Some people took videos at these previews either with cameraphones or digital cameras and uploaded them to YouTube. They were up for a while, but I heard that the film company made them remove them. Linking to Youtube on Wikipedia
There are quite a few videos related to Wikipedia articles. Many of the videos violate the copyright.
Referring to this in this articles: "Content owners are not just targeting YouTube for copyright infringements, but are also targeting third party websites that link to infringing content on YouTube and other video-sharing sites. Spam marking
One of the new features of the rating system for comments is (or maybe it existed before and I didn't notice?) marking comments as spam. This is being heavily abused, with people clicking 'spam' on every single comment on a person's video so it looks like they have no comments. It makes interaction very difficult. Citation Needed for Spamming on YouTube?
Why is there a citation needed tag on the section that briefly explains the growing problem of spam on YouTube.com? Just go to any random video on there and you will find your proof. All this spamming, which has been climbing at an exponential rate on YouTube, is one of the largest blows to the website. I added some information about spam under the Spamming section:
"At one point, it was possible to flood people's profiles with thousands of comments per minute by repeatedly clicking the "Submit Comment" button; however, YouTube patched this problem by implementing a flood control system. The same used to be possible when posting bulletins to friends. Nevertheless, it is still possible to rapidly spam groups and group invites.
These types of spammers almost always get their accounts suspended by YouTube; however, they always create new accounts and spam people again. YouTube has not banned these spammers' IP addresses, allowing them to repeatedly create new accounts at will."

- I think the VideoDownloader plugin's broken. I read somewhere that the .flv files that YouTube uses get saved into the Temporary Internet Files folder on your computer, though I'm not too sure about it myself.

Outdated picture

Spam
There has been a lot of spam recently on YouTube. They are usually things like "Visit pervertcamz.prv for hot videos! -Pervert27" or "Click my name to get a link to a dirty video that would probably give you spyware." They are on almost every video (Can you believe they dared to spam This? (Don't click if you wear your heart on your sleeve) I can't believe they would spam that just to advertise porn.) The only thing that YouTube does about is ban each individual account, which is not enough. YouTube should IP ban these spammers, especially those that send out 100+ group invites/minute or people that have been doing it for many months. TanookiMario257 02:25, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

- I always thought the Ten-Minute-Limit (I'm referring to it as the 10ML) was redundant when it started anyway; I had seen ones over 10:00 in the past; Someone uploaded AMV Hell 3 - which is well over 60 minutes long - while the 10ML was still in effect. If it's still there, I'll remove that piece of the section, but as far as I'm aware, the 100MB limit still stands. Any objections, revert and let me know.

Youtube users who have been using it for longer do not have a 10ML. The most recent users have been able to pass up the 10ML. Inapropriete?
Youtube has been said too be very inapropriete. Suddenly from Nice Broadcasting place it has turned into threating Posts, Swear words, animal Abuse, And Real Faces. It has been scary watching those bad comments float by, and our Children watching. Although Good songs and TV shows on youtube it has been said by many fellow mothers and fathers around the world youtube is sinking. Youtube has been apropriete for children, house pets, and some parents. From Popular too Inapropriete.

I have come to the conclusion of Ok Go's 'A Million Ways', this is because it became the most watched internet video of all time.
