Clarification on the Brazilian lawsuit

The same court of Law that imposed the filtering ended up reviewing their own decision. The original text mentioned there was an injunction that was later overturned by a superior court, and that was not the case - the same court blocked then later unblocked the service.

Youtube ran considerable ads wit adbrite and they had a huge IPOD giveaway promotiont hing too. I think it was a free ipod every day and they where big advertisers with adbrite. Don't visit these spin off sites. Many are link farms, but some may contain malware. For example, Yootube.info is highly suspicious. Some reports [1] suggest yooutube.info installs adware by using a trojan with windows media player. The homepage appears to be phishing youtube.com. When I visited (with javascript and flash turned off), the only link on the page took me to a site which was very suspicious, probably producing pop-ups and possibly worse (if I had javascript on), and probably linking to infected windows media files.

Why it's bad to let people post anything

Yes, Google has bought them. And Youtube will continue to post copyrighted material (I have no problem with that!) and Google will take on the legal costs. The marginal benifits greatly outweigh the marginal costs.

The photograph issue again

This is just to raise the issue again since the previous discussion was archived. If anyone lives in San Bruno near YouTube, please take a good picture of the new headquarters if you get the chance. I assume the trees have lost their leaves now so it should be easier. I am too busy myself to drive into the vicinity of YouTube, find public parking on the street in the residential neighborhood half a mile away (since YouTube picked an office park with no public parking and poor mass transit access) and walk all the way into the complex to get a good shot. Number of Favorites allowed?

Does anyone know the limit to how many favorites you're allowed? I got up to 304, then I got a message saying limit reached. Now, even though I've removed loads (I'm down to 200), it still displays the message.

YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage

I'm trying to find another reference to "YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage" it's an article that describes how YouTube leaked it's users passwords to the site. This is an extremely important event in YouTube history because every user appears to be affected and the ramifications of every users password, email address and full name been leaked to the Internet is huge. I tried adding this to the Wiki but you know what it's like trying to add controversial content to a Wiki. Videos ending prematurely

I got fed up with this problem because I had to use Javimoya's Video Downloader on many videos just to watch it's full content! Basically, it just downloads a portion of the video, the downloading grinds to a halt then sooner or later the whole bar fills with red colour and the player shows the two buttons that allow you to share or watch the video again. It happened to me several times that I remembered that this article had some content that addressed this issue. I think it happens when YouTube's servers are overloaded or if one's internet connection is horrible or overloaded. Reloading the page with normal/forced refresh sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I've readded this issue to the technical limitations section, albeit with just enough info to be a "section stub". Viacom

As of Feb. '07, Viacom has ordered youtube to remove 100,000 videos that they own the copyright to. This is the largest number of videos requested to be taken down.

Acoustic Fingerprints

In October of '06 Youtube agreed to use filtering software to stop copyrighted music from appearing on Youtube. It's February of '07 and they still haven't done it. Viacom is forcing them to remove any vicaom videos from the site because of this.

Clips of teachers that went "angry" at school

There were numerous reports of users uploading clips of teachers without consent, including angry teachers. For example, a user used hidden cam to show a teacher making a violent outburst because a student brought a cell phone, and he broke it. 3rd party application

There isn't currently a link to any example of a third party application for downloading Youtube videos. I would've added a link, but this page is protected. A good example is youtube-dl, a cross-platform python script(program) under the MIT license. A 3-rd party web-based player named Green Player is available at http://www.peabee.com/ as well as an application to generate the playlist for it. The player is skinnable and supports numerous video sources including Google Video, Revver, and direct FLV links.

GA promotion

I am promoting this article to GA because it meets WP:WIAGA and seems to be fairly stable. Good work :) Some things that I thought might be worth working on for the push to FA:

The recent events section is broken up into too many sub-sections and interferes with the flow of the article.

The social impact section could be expanded more I feel, YouTube is referenced in popular culture all the time.

Popularity

Shouldn't its internet popularity be mentioned in the introductory paragraph with a little more than just 'it is popular'? I think that the Alexa Internet Rating should be added to it. Currently, YouTube is the fourth most popular internet site. Obviously, this fluctuates, but it is consistently ranked in the top 10, usually even the top 5. Shouldn't this be added, it is an interesting fact, and it adds credibility to the popularity claim. I think that the intro is the proper place for it. Anyone agree? Well, I finallly got a decent photo of YouTube HQ

As everyone has probably noticed, I finally found an excuse to be in San Bruno on the weekend and got a decent photo of YouTube's new home on Cherry Avenue. Unfortunately it was overcast at the time. San Bruno is usually overcast and foggy, like San Francisco and the rest of the northern Peninsula. Youtube banned in Turkey

As of 06.03.2007 access to youtube is banned in Turkey. Trying to access youtube gives a "Access to www.youtube.com site has been suspended in accordance with decision no: 2007/384 dated 06.03.2007 of Istanbul First Criminal Peace Court." page. Reasoning for the ban is videos insulting Turks and Ataturk on youtube.

Scottish Insult

The word "tube" is a Scottish insult, like idiot, a-hole etc. So "You Tube" is just a fantastic name for a website if you're from Scotland! I love it!

Do Youtube employees actually care about copyright infringement?

Over 24 hours ago, I did a simple search for 'Spongebob' to see if any results would pop up, and found a video featuring several Spongebob clips. I flagged the video, I sent a mail to Youtube, 24 hours later, the video is still there. I don't understand why they can let this kind of activity slide, when a simple 'search and delete' can get rid of the copyrighted clips. I didn't have to look hard for it, I did every last thing a user could possibly do to inform Youtube that they have a copyrighted clip by Viacom on their site, yet I see no action taken towards the clip and its a day later. How can they let this slide?

Also, I'm not sure if this applicable in the Spongebob case, but remember that Google has deals with a number of major copyright holders so that they can legally offer copyrighted material on YouTube. Google pays a fixed fee for this right. Google makes money, the copyright holders make money (without having to incur any additional promotional or distributional costs, mind you), and the consumers win big.

New video limit length

Subdomains named after airports

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but all the youtube subdomains/servers seem to have been named after airport-codes (e.g. chi, sjl ...). 82.10.181.252 13:28, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

lax, ash, and sjc are all IATA airport codes. chi seems to be an all-inclusive code for airports in Chicago. Does sjl represent the ICAO code? There's also sjl-casing. Maybe they just denote the city location of the servers. Why?

Why are they taking down the music videos and things like that, we see it on tv all the time for free, so why we not see on the internet on you tube. All those people are getting free publicity so why are they complaining? They are taking down all of the music videos because artists see it as people stealing their music. When you see it on MTV, it is because MTV had permission. On MTV, you might hear a song and then decide to go out and buy the CD. On youtube, you can just listen to it again, or possibly even take the audio from the video and burn a CD. MTV is just there to get publicity for the song. Viacom and some other conglomerates are suing youtube. If you want to watch a show, they want you to either watch it on TV or buy the series on DVD. That way, they make money. They don't care about you getting the music or show, they only care about they money they make.

Viewing deleted videos

Venture capital contradiction

just go to youtube and type "ryan vs dorkman" and then after you finish watching that one, search "kimbo" and you will see. ryan wieber was a guy who worked for star wars, but is now currently making lightsaber battle videos, and kimbo is a street fighter.

Youtube an "American" site

I don't disagree that Youtube is owned by Google, which is an "American" company in as much as it has its headquarters in America. However, I don't think it really adds anything to the article to say "Youtube is a popular American video sharing site" rather than just "Youtube is a popular video sharing site". For an Internet website, the place where the company is located seems rather irrelevant. This just seems like an attempt to force an American patriotic point of view on the article. In any case, the details about where the company is based are provided in the second sentence of the article.

I'd also say that for a "social" site like Youtube where the user base is important, the nationality of the users who use the site would determine the "label" of nationality that we apply to it. Saying "Youtube is an American site" implies that it is only targeted at Americans, which is not the case:

Founded in February 2005, YouTube is the leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience.

As you can see, Youtube's website explicitly states that it is targeted at users worldwide and not just Americans. To claim that it is an "American" site is to imply that it is targeted only at Americans, which is not true. It is also true that there are thousands of users of the site in other countries outside America. In conclusion, Youtube is not an "American" site in as much as being targeted as a site solely for Americans, as this is not true. fraggle 16:34, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Viewing deleted videos a fake?

The site this article links to in the viewing deleted videos section is filled with ads, and has no videos (that I saw) which obviously violate Youtube regulations. I think that it is just regular embedded Youtube video's with ads to pull in revenue for the sites owner. But I am not sure so I will not remove it. I don't think youtube is blocked in Brazil

I live in Brazil, I can access youtube, I don't know anyone who can't and I never heard of people who couldn't access youtube in here. I'm pretty sure the banning wasn't carried out.

I am not sure i understand "youtube fame". when will this list ever end. what is fame "after" youtube. i think this is a completely ridiculous and bias idea of fame BEYOND youtube. anyway, please discuss. maybe i missed something. but to me the only famous youtubers would be maybe LG15 and renetto. but this un-ending list of people is a tad disturbing TomSkillingJr.
