William John Evelyn edit

He is widely known as William John Evelyn never William Evelyn (there are seven references for this) also Deptford was in Kent not Surrey. --Rob Kam (talk) 15:12, 18 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

The article was at William John Evelyn until two days ago. If you've checked all the references (I haven't) then just move it back. Opera hat (talk) 16:16, 18 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I tried but made a right hash of it due to redirects getting created at every attempted move. --Rob Kam (talk) 16:34, 18 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Done. Opera hat (talk) 17:56, 18 August 2019 (UTC) Reverted. Looks like there should be a move discussion. Opera hat (talk) 17:59, 18 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
The family history refers to him as WJE. --Rob Kam (talk) 19:38, 18 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
The family history certainly regularly uses his full name, but this appears to be disambiguation to distinguish him from the two previous William Evelyns in the family tree. Other sources that routinely use full names to disambiguate, such as Who’s Who and the London Gazette, do the same. None of these are evidence as to Common name; the question is whether he went through life being referred to by his full name, and here the evidence suggests otherwise. The family history itself refers to him casually as “William Evelyn” many times during accounts of his life, as do a fair few reference sources such as the Churchill archive and the Australian National Placenames survey, as well as Hansard itself. The family history also contains quotes from various contemporary sources referring to him as “William Evelyn”. MapReader (talk) 14:53, 19 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
The book Who was who 1897 - 1916, lists him as "Evelyn, William John". --Rob Kam (talk) 11:57, 27 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
