Date of foundation edit

The Vietnamese Wikipedia's starting date is a bit more muddled than some of its peers. The wiki itself existed before I arrived. It was apparently created in November 2002, with Joakim Löfkvist (of the first trio of sysops) writing "Internet Society" as the first article. However, Wikipedia Statistics didn't record any articles until October 2003, when an internal link was added to "Internet Society". By then, the main page had seen several edits that weren't recorded by the Phase II software, including by Vieilletortue. I started editing on the 3rd.

The language about "restarting" can be traced to an edit Joakim made to Wikipedia:Multilingual coordination noting that the project was "restarted on November 12, 2003". That (or perhaps the 11th) was the day the project was upgraded to MediaWiki and converted to UTF-8 (so we could input Vietnamese without HTML character escapes). By that time, some Vietnamese-language pages had already been added to what was then the multilingual Wiktionary, setting the stage for the Vietnamese Wiktionary.

Voting edit

As i expressed my opinion to merge all the relevant from Nguyen Xuan Minh article into this article in the review deletion. And Eagle why did you close the review too early? At least let the people saw my opinion and let them have an idea on merging. I think that's what the majority of the community is since there are 7 keep, 3 merge and some of the redirects clearly said redirect or merge all the relevant info here so therefore that what should be the result.Trongphu (talk) 00:32, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The AfD was closed as delete; the review snowed to confirm the deletion. Majority is not consensus. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:41, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Then yea the deletion decision is not a consensus too even if it has the most amount of votes. The review just showed that people want to delete the article, it has nothing to do with merging it.Trongphu (talk) 00:44, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the deletion decision is consensus. It was closed with consensus to delete. Not consensus to merge. Continued attempts to merge deleted material are disrupting Wikipedia to make a point. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:46, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I agreed that the result is delete but did it mean i can't put the info into this Vietnamese Wikipedia article? I doubt it. And again as i said many times according to the result i think the keep votes are relevant enough to count as merge vote and some indirect votes are express the same thing. Let open the voting again to see what the consensus or majority says or whatever you call it. Let see if the info should at least has its place here.Trongphu (talk) 00:51, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Delete means delete. Not merge, or redirect. And no, the voting is not going to be opened again. Let it go, please. Black Kite (t) (c) 00:53, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
The consensus is obviously merge since most people wanted it. I don't get how you get the consensus is delete and what the process to determine the consensus at all? This is two different kind of voting though. There are not related at all. The AfD voting is to determine whether or not the subject deserve the article. This voting is to determine whether or not it should be merge into this article. I have a right to express my opinion. If you don't like it, why assume that you are always right? Why don't you let the community has their voice and look for consensus. This is no different than dictator. In my eye, for all the discussion i have been through i think for many people, Vietnamese people is like nothing more than trash. This is deeply insult me, and no i won't give up. Give up = coward = unacceptable = rather die than to do so. This is already my big concession when i know there is no way it can has its own article since so many people are... I will fight for at least the info has its place in this article.Trongphu (talk) 01:06, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Note to all users thinking of replying: It's not worth it to argue with someone who doesn't get it. Eagles 24/7 (C) 01:08, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict)The "community had their voice" in the AfD. Merge was an option. It was not selected. And your WP:IDIDNTHEARTHAT has gotten you blocked for a week for disruptive editing. - The Bushranger One ping only 01:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

History edit

Yikes, I didn't expect the issue of my biography to snowball like this.

Trongphu, if I understand correctly, it sounds like most people just object to the entire deleted article being copied into this article. You yourself argued at the Vietnamese Wikipedia that merging in this way wouldn't make sense, because it would make the article unbalanced. On the other hand, this article could certainly use some additional context and history. When I suggested merging with this article, I should've clarified that I assumed the merged content would be pared down significantly.

The best way forward would be to translate the "Lịch sử" section of "Wikipedia tiếng Việt" at the Vietnamese Wikipedia. It already provides a more or less balanced history of the project, albeit without all of the dates I clarified above. Here's my translation; perhaps a disinterested third party would be kind enough to incorporate it into the article somehow:

Along with the encyclopedia itself, the Vietnamese Wikipedia's community of contributors also grew steadily. In the beginning (from late 2003 to early 2005), awareness of the language edition was concentrated among the Overseas Vietnamese community. Contributors came from outside Vietnam, with the exception of a foreigner living in Vietnam (Joakim Löfkvist). Discussions from this time were written primarily in English.[1] At the time, no one had anticipated that the Vietnamese Wikipedia, a website, could have surpassed the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Vietnam as it has today. The slogan Bách khoa toàn thư mở ("open encyclopedia") had not been adopted by the Vietnamese Wikipedia; instead, the project was described as Bách khoa tự do, a literal translation of "The Free Encyclopedia".[2] The community's early rules and guidelines, as well as the election of the first administrators took place at this time: Minh Nguyen, Dung Nguyen, and Joakim Löfkvist became administrators in late 2003[3]). In February 2005, Minh Nguyen was also entrusted with becoming the project's first bureaucrat. (At the time, Nguyen was still a high school student and had not reached 18 years of age.[4])

The Vietnamese press also began taking note, introducing the Vietnamese Wikipedia in newspaper articles. This coverage helped increase awareness of the project among Vietnamese speakers. From then on, the project developed quickly,[5] helping to make Wikipedia one of the 20 most visited websites in Vietnam in mid-2010, according to Alexa.[6] The press went on to publicize Wikipedia's fundraising drives so that Wikipedia and its sister projects would continue to develop as a free service free of advertising.[7]

The first social gathering for contributors was held in July 2006 in Hanoi.[8]

Note that this is a mostly literal translation. Many of the people who commented at the deletion vote expressed concern about excessive navel-gazing, so I would totally agree if some of the inward-looking details (like the stuff I crossed out) were left out.

Right now we Vietnamese can view it as usual. For banned sites in Vietnam, please check Internet censorship in Vietnam. Tuanminh01 (talk) 06:37, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
What aboute neutral point view? Are there critics of communism, goverment of vietnam?--Kaiyr (talk) 16:39, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Kaiyr: Vietnamese Wikipedia is neutral, although there are quite a few articles that criticize the government and leaders of Vietnam, as well as communism. This is quite normal in this country, but people won't say it directly and in public. Plantaest (talk) 14:34, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

About characteristics edit

The article on Japanese Wikipedia lists some differences between English Wikipedia and it, and I think that the notable differences between English and Vietnamese Wikipedias are not just the one I've added (the failed Wikipedia proposal on importance is however a formal guideline there). Hope that Wikipedians who are familiar with Vietnamese Wikipedia can add more.--RekishiEJ (talk) 15:45, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
