5'10?

I think the source about him being 5'10 is inaccurate. I generally see sources creditting him at 6'1, and he appears to be quite tall onscreen.

According to the sidebar on this CNN page, Harrison Ford's grosses "are the second-highest of any actor in Hollywood history, after Tom Hanks." (emphasis mine; note: no mention of Samuel Jackson). Furthermore, according to Box Office Mojo, Samuel Jackson ranks 8th on the list. That's two distinct, co-supporting, reputable sources that agree on at least the top two names on the list (and neither of them are Samuel Jackson! ;). 216.240.7.149 03:33, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Here's the problem as I see it. Box Office Mojo doesn't count most minor roles - so a few of Jackson's bit parts in films that grossed a lot of money aren't counted. Thus the discreprancy. Mad Jack O'Lantern 03:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

CNN also references Hanks and Ford as #1 and #2 respectively (which mirrors Box Office Mojo's data) and, although they don't cite their source, I would take the "word" of two concurring, reputable sources over one that cites only the actor himself as the source[1]: "Jackson says he recently passed Harrison Ford". If you indeed only count for films where someone has a major role, then it is really between tom hanks and harrison ford...however if you count all films one has appeared in...still samuel jackson may be one of the top contenders but my money will be on Christopher Lee...he has appeared in star wars, lord of the rings, james bond and numerous other films....---Khernitz 05:04, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Allright, i'm going to point some things out now:

• A. According to the site we have as our source, Eddie Murphy is the highest grossing actor of all time (Ya right!)
• B. According to that same site, Leonardo DiCaprio isn't even on the list of top 50 actors which drop total lifetime gross down to 1.3 billion dollars, despite the fact that his one movie Titanic would put him in the number 19 spot, and then if you added all the other films he's been in he'd be boosted even higher to at least the top 5.
• C. According to the last piece of information we had here about him, it said he had the highest gross of all time at 2.6 billion dollars

It's all part of Wikipedia. We can only use media in the public domain or ones licensed under the GFDL (or whatever they've decided the latest license should be). They're almost impossible to get—most stuff on the Internet is copyrighted, whether or not it's explicitly stated. There's not much you can do about the image without finding one someone is willing to give up the rights to in writing. The 'paparazzi' sell images for hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands. Maybe Tom will grant us with a picture? He's probably the only actor I can think of that has lead his life with the greatest of integrity and done wonderful things for this world with his entertaining films. At least in the 2004 picture he is looking the right direction (you should always try and choose pictures where the subject is looking into the center of the article if you can help it, instead of looking at the edge that they are on) and it is a clearer picture. Years of Oscars

At this page the years of all Oscars and nominations is one year later and it may be correct because then would be the same years than golden globes.

If you clic on the year at this page then it shows the nominations and winners. I think that the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor is bad because the years are the years of the films and not the years of the Oscar celebrations, for example the last year is 2006 althought it should be 2007

Who the HELL is Joshua Adamson?

I met the name Joshua Adamson in the bio, and also two other bios, Stephen Hawking and John Donne. Well, who the hell is that vampire, who was the life-long friend of men both in the 17. and in the 20. century, and about whom they wrote with the same sentence in each article?

I suggest it is a media hack. There is a Joshua Adamson, he edits the Urban Dictionary.com site. Also there is a science student Joshua, etc. Or maybe there is a bored teenager Joshua. Don't you think it is a very stupid way to advertise a name?

Prop 8 section (Political views)

This section seems quite haphazardly written. It lists amounts of money raised by both the pro- and anti- Prop 8 campaigns, yet does nothing to link this directly to Tom Hanks. The cited source links to a LA Times article that simply shows that Prop 8 passed and which counties passed it.

Until there is some reference-able source for Mr. Hanks' contributions to the campaign against Prop 8 there is no reason to include this information. It is enough to state his opposition to the legislation (preferably with a source...), and to describe his later actions re: the LDS church.

In addition, one of the references pertaining to the LDS controversy is a link to a blog. While the blog appears to have a fairly large readership, the article reads as an opinion piece, and I am unsure of its usefulness as a verifiable source. It would be much better to find an actual news article for this piece of information.

You blatantly cut content that was sourced to the Los Angeles Times and included information about Hanks re: Prop 8, cut something tagged for a source (that isn't a given action), cut content that was sourced also to Fox News, and there is no requirement that we present how much money Hanks himself gave. I would suggest that the Times-sourced information is not particularly relevant to this page (that is, Tom Hanks), and that its inclusion is unnecessary, but that could be debated. Since the source doesn't mention Hanks, it may as well be shortened and generalized to "Hanks raised money for the campaign."

Shouldn't we have a little 'personal life' section which states when he met his wife, got married, had children, etc? That seems to be the norm in most articles about people. In "Real Genius"

Part of the article says, "Hanks also appears for a moment as an uncredited extra in the movie Real Genius (1985), when the lead character, Mitch, bumps into him in a crowd."

I can find no verfication of this. I have seen the referenced part of the movie myself, however some say it is Hanks, and others say it is not.

LDS Faith

Doctrine taught by any church shouldn't change because of public opinion. God knew from the beginning of time that there would be the movements that are occurring today. He knew that proposition 8 would happen, and bring the controversy it would.

You know a church is wrong, if they change eternal doctrine, so satisfy public opinion. Under the 1996 to Present section the following: "Hanks' next endeavor, released on May 15, 2009, was a film adaptation of Angels & Demons, Dan Brown's prequel to The Da Vinci Code" should be edited to "Hanks' next endeavor, released on May 15, 2009, was a film adaptation of Angels & Demons, also written by Dan Brown."

The reason for the change is because it is factual erroneous to call Angels and Demons the prequel, because it was written before The DaVinci Code(Angels and Demons was released in 2001 whereas The DaVinci Code was released in 2003), making The DaVinci code a sequel (a prequel implies it was written after, but the story takes place before). While the movie Angels and Demons may have been a prequel because The DaVinci Code movie was released first, in the above quotation, the article is referring to the books, which makes the information incorrect. Saving Private Ryan

A small edit for a not-so-small inaccuracy. The article states that:

"For Saving Private Ryan he teamed up with Steven Spielberg to make a film about D-Day, the landing at Omaha Beach, and a quest through war-torn France to bring back a soldier who has a ticket home."

Though the movie does open on D-Day at Omaha Beach, the movie is not about D-Day, nor about Omaha Beach--it is about the search for the soldier. To write that the movie is about D-Day (or Omaha Beach, for that matter) suggests that the movie focuses on that set of events. While the movie does depict D-Day, it does so only to contextualize the story that follows. The movie isn't even "set" on D-Day or at Omaha Beach--the first few minutes occur there, but the rest of the action occurs for the most part in various parts of France.

Removal of "minor" awards

An editor has removed what s/he believes to be "minor" awards in the Hanks filmography. I've never seen anyone do this before and wonder what the basis is for doing so, let alone how one decides which awards are minor and which are not. That isn't particularly helpful. It's just a matter of fact statement with little support. Putting that aside, are you making a distinction between awards and nominations? In other words, if Hanks is nominated for a SAG award, you would remove it, but if he won a SAG award, you would leave it in? If so, that's even more editorial judgment that's open to question as to the reputation of the group that's giving the award intersecting with nomination vs. win. Also, you say "for an actor like this", which implies that it's okay to have more "minor" awards with less notable actors. Thanks for your direct answers. I still see this as an inherently difficult framework to apply. You have to decide which awards are important and you have to decide how many awards an actor has to get before he qualifies for removal of so-called minor awards. My inclination is to revert your changes (seems to me that you have to justify the removal of sourced material that is relevant to the subject) until at least a consensus has been reached as to Hanks (I have little hope that a global consenus can be reached), but I'm going to wait a bit to see if anyone besides you and me engage in this dialog and also to ponder the ramifications a bit more.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:33, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

None of the awards were sourced to begin with Generally speaking, awards are sourced by pointing to the articles that list all of the awards. Now, it's true that Wikipedia article are normally not acceptable sources, but in my experience, this is a common practice with respect to awards because, practically speaking, the extra work is significant and, generally, unneeded. Even assuming, though, that Wikipedia articles are unacceptable sources in this context, you could have left the awards in and put in citation needed templates.

Abraham Lincoln

The reference for this claim of relation to Abraham Lincoln is dubious. It seems genealogy as it relates to Abraham Lincoln past 2 generations isn't particularly clear; the closest information I can find regarded this shared heritage is http://www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/tomh/index.htm which makes a claim then doesn't actually provide a tree linking the two people (despite trees provided relevant to them independently). Another tree is presented in Steve Martin's speech at the ceremony for Tom Hank's AFI Lifetime Achievement in 2002 ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3KiSJqK2VA 2:41 in), and though this largely lines up with the previous link, it just seems odd considering the shallow depth of genealogy surrounding the 16th President of the United States. Hi, There is a "citation needed" about whether Tom Hanks' acceptance speech directly inspired the film In & Out starring Kevin Kline.

"During his acceptance speech he revealed that his high school drama teacher Rawley Farnsworth and former classmate John Gilkerson, two people with whom he was close, were gay.[9] The revelation inspired the 1997 film In & Out, starring Kevin Kline as an English Literature teacher who is outed by a former student in a similar way.[citation needed]"

This Entertainment Weekly article, where one of the film's producers, Scott Rudin, describes coming up with the idea for the movie, should be a good citation:

I noticed that in the Television credits, Hanks is only cited once. This is a blatant error considering the fact that Hanks has hosted the show 10 times and is the first person to introduce the concept of the Five Timers Club (look it up!) Within Perfect World's MMORPG Forsaken World Tom Hanks is featured. He, Lt. Dan, and various other characters from Hanks' movies are NPCs within a certain daily quest named "Run Boy Run", which is similar to the game's other quest named "Run Girl Run", but with a reference to Forrest Gump. Within the quest you are to follow him around for 30 legs, each of which are 40 meters long. I believe that this reference is worthy of being mentioned within a trivia section on Hanks' page. Personal life section and sources

I just deadlinked the reference to E Magazine in this section. I also looked at the first two sources (Guardian and US Weekly), and they conflict as to the years of his marriages. The Guardian says that he divorced Lewes and married Wilson in 1985, whereas US Weekly says he divorced Lewes in 1987 and married Wilson in 1988. Our article goes with the second source. This should be cleaned up.

I also see no sources in support of the second sentence of the first paragraph (how he and Wilson met).

I removed some unsourced (and not terribly important) information, including Lewes's maiden name and the sentence about her death. We can add back ini the maiden name with a source. I don't see how Lewes's death many years after the divorce is relevant to the Hanks article, even if it were sourced.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:57, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

The Burbs was not an actual box-office failure by many globally accepted definitions of it, including our own wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_box_office_bombs, thus making the context here completely subjective. The box office took in 21 million more than the budget; hardly a box-office failure. I'm sorry ... what were you trying to say?

There are two sections that I found confusing.

The first is under the heading "Progression into dramatic roles". In the first paragraph we read:

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hanks noted his "modern era of moviemaking ... because enough self-discovery has gone on.... My work has become less pretentiously fake and over the top". This "modern era" began in 1993 for Hanks ...

I have no idea what happened in that quote. Is that the whole quote? Maybe I'm missing something.

The second is the last two 'paragraphs' under the heading: "1996–present: Directing, producing and acting", where we find out:

He is ranked as the highest all time box office star with over $3.639 billion total box office gross, an average of $107 million per film.[50] He has been involved with seventeen films that grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office, the highest grossing of which was 2010's Toy Story 3.[51]

As of 2012, Hanks' films have grossed over $4.2 billion at the United States box office alone, and over $8.5 billion worldwide[2] making him the highest all time box office star.

Are those two sets of figures at odds with each other? I thought maybe the '2012' figures were an update on the earlier figures, but I'm not sure enough to make any changes.

On a different matter, while I was doing some copy-edits, I noticed that there were two usages of possesive apostrophes going on ... 6 uses of Hanks's and 15 of Hanks'. MOSS:POSS suggests that either can be used, but should be consistent. So I changed it to all Hanks'. (I did not change the usage in the references as for all I know the other usage may be in the source material.)

It's trivia, something out of Ripley's Believe It Or Not, and certainly not encyclopedic. I notice you are choosing to edit war over it and place bogus warnings on my talk page rather than discussing and waiting for consensus. Coverage by a single article in a single publication doesn't make something notable. Bop or Tiger Beat (I'm not a 13-year-old anymore, so these references may be out of date) publish articles identifying what Nick Carter's or Ricky Martin's (ditto) favorite color or sportball team or TV show is, but that generally isn't considered encyclopedic information. I think a good article under a subject like this should have a filmography table. The table should follow the format; Year - Title - Role - Note - Source. Where "Year" is the year of the film's release date. Please see MOS:YEAR. "Title" is the title of the work. "Role" is the role played by Tom as it is written and presented in the credits of the work. Both "Note" and "Source" sections are optional. The "Note" section may include additional information such as medium, episode titles, or awards while the "source" section should be used when the role or the work itself may be obscure or difficult to verify. Affair

I hesitate to bring it up, and I won't put it in until it has been discussed, but why does the article not acknowledge that he cheated on his first wife (Lewes) with Wilson? They began their affair in 1985, Hanks didn't divorce Lewes until 1987. As far as sources, in the June 2006 Esquire he stated,

"Rita and I just looked at each other and - kaboing - that was that.

"I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied."

Commenting on the affair, he adds, "Well, yeah, I did happen to be married at the time. And there's nothing to celebrate about that."

The divorce was rather nasty for it's day, and Hanks had his first two children with Lewes as well. I realize people want to think that Hanks is perfect, and don't get me wrong, he's far and away my favorite actor and one of the greatest guys in Hollywood hands down, but that doesn't mean his mistakes should be overlooked. He is known for the films that have been around for several years and which have gained a great deal of respect and recognition. Education

The infobox as it stands strongly implies that Hanks has a degree in fine arts; the article states that he dropped out before completing his degree.

My thought is that the two colleges currently listed in the "alma mater" parameter should be moved to "education", and the reference to the degree removed (which should be added to the body); this should make it look less like he completed the degree.

The doc for {{Infobox person}} suggests that when there's no actual degree granted, it's "usually not relevant to include either parameter", but also suggests "article talk page consensus may conclude otherwise", so here I am. There isn't really a better place in the article for that statement, however, nor is there much more information about those donations. Place of bio photo

Hello

I have been trying to add to the caption of Hanks' photo where he was when it was taken (The 2019 Toronto International Film Festival) but this continually gets taken down. I believe that it is necessary information as people may not want to click on the photo to find out where he is.

I hope that this conflict can be sorted soon.

We can't assume what readers do or don't want. There's a manual of style, which you're ignoring. WP:OTHER isn't a thing either, by the way. I can have an admin take a peek at the issue if you're intent on disregarding the policies.

Admins don't resolve content disputes, which this is. WP:CAPLENGTH doesn't say to include location or not to include location for infobox image. The disagreement should be worked out here. Schazjmd (talk) 19:28, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
