"Rye" or "rai" means "gentleman", "master", "king" (cf. Raja) in the Romani language. Hence, "Romany Rye" (or 'Romano Rai') could be rendered as "Romani gentleman" or even "King of the Gypsies". See the folk song quoted at Didicoy. —Zalktis (talk) 12:32, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
