Season 2?

edit

Are the episodes after the mini-series considered season 2? I'm trying to figure out what episodes Jim Cummings supposedly did Ioz's voice. This is the only place I see him listed instead of Hector Elizondo. Defunctzombie (talk) 05:20, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pirates Of Dark Water: The Saga Begins

edit

Does anyone know what this is? Seems to be a feature film, but IMDB doesn't mention it. Esn 21:30, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

That video is just the pilot story arc of the series collected on a single VHS as a so-called "movie" (not unlike the Phantom 2040 video or similar examples). Those first four or five episodes originally aired on Fox Kids (U.S.) weekday afternoons in an early promotional run (Fall 1990) when the show was titled simply "Dark Water", still vieing for a regular syndication home. Apparently for marketing purposes, the words "The Pirates of'" were subsequently added to the title along with some (dumbing-down) intro-sequence voiceover narration (...if I recall) when the show moved to ABC's Saturday morning lineup in the following year/s.

I am trying to find out where this series is originally from. I believe that the idea has come from a series of books, but cannot seem to find what they are called. A friend of mine says that he has read at least one of the books but cannot remember the name of them. If you know please send a response to gypsyeyes010480@yahoo.com with dark water in the subject line. Thanks. 24.175.69.163 (talk) 21:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Allusions

edit

Should there be a section that has a list of shows/instances that PoDW influenced? I was watching some old episodes and I noticed a lot of stuff was borrowed from the show in Farcape, Stargate and other such shows? Facebookery (talk) 18:20, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think the Dark Water was inspired by "The Raft" from "Creepshow 2." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.135.167.21 (talk) 05:12, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

My changes

edit

Recently my changes were undone by an unanymous user and StoneCold. Do I really have to explain why detailed lists of fictional, in-universe places, weapons, enemies, treasures etc etc etc are not part of Wikipedia? If my edits continue to be undone, I have no choice but to call in help from an admin. --Soetermans (talk) 12:12, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's going on with the missing treasures - one of the main parts of the show that I need again and has been removed...

Info which was removed...

The Thirteen Treasures and Their Locations

The Compass: Given to Ren by Alomar, a lizardlike creature, and the spiritual attendant of Ren's father Primus, both of whom have been guarding it in the Abbey of Galdebar (TV) or the Abbey of the Gallows (comics), to locate the treasures. It is presumed the first seven Treasures are those hidden by Primus's loyal seven servants, the captains who accompanied him on his original quest, as many references are made to them having hidden them. Teron, supreme ecomancer of Andorus, openly admits to having hid the Third Treasure of Rule, and Avagon, the devoted aide of Primus, was witness to Primus giving the Treasures to the captains to prevent them from falling into Bloth's hands.

The First Treasure: At the top of a rocky tower on the far side of the Dragon's Maw, a narrow pass with high waterfalls on either side, in an area of Mer that's particularly prone to much geological activity. The Compass reacts particularly strongly to this Treasure.

The Second Treasure: Located in Pandawa, home of the monkeybirds. It was part of the crown of the monkeybird Queen, which had been hidden under the house of the ruthless slaver Jargis once he assumed control and transformed the island into a slave colony. Once Ren and Niddler helped spark the monkeybirds to revolt against the slavers and retake Pandawa, the crown was uncovered. Upon hearing of Ren's quest for the Treasures, the Queen gives Ren the Treasure as a token of gratitude.

The Third Treasure: Underneath the island of Andorus, hidden by the supreme ecomancer Teron, who placed a spell on it so that only a member of the House of Primus traveling alone would be able to find it. It's also guarded by a spirit of disease and pestilence known as the Blight that the ecomancers had banished there, but which was revived by the Dark Water when it ravaged Andorus.

The Fourth Treasure: The specific location is unknown, but Ren had to dive underwater for an extended period of time in order to retrieve it.

The Fifth Treasure: On the island of Miragon, at the top of a mountain guarded by a monstrous wormlike crab, the gallquin.

The Sixth Treasure: In a cave at the top of Mobo Mountain, the tallest mountain on Mobo Island. The entire island is surrounded by stecca fog, a type of highly corrosive fog, and this fog wraps around the mountain as well. Also guarding the Treasure is the Ferrix, a monstrous creature that breathes this stecca fog the way a dragon breathes fire. Once the Treasure is retrieved, it dissolves the stecca fog. Additionally, through sorcery, it's revealed that the Ferrix was a normal ferret placed under a spell.

The Seventh Treasure: Found near some Dark Water vents on the ocean floor.

"Non-Primal" Treasures

The Eighth Treasure: A purple, dinosaur-like baby. It has evolved or mutated. (Episode 21)

The Lost Treasures: Treasures nine to thirteen were not found by Ren or Primus within the show, but they are visible during a few flashbacks, especially in the episode "The Beast and the Bell". Fan speculation believes they may also be similarly transformed like the eighth treasure. This is supported by some dialogue by Jenna in the fourteenth episode, and by closing lines by Tula in the twenty-first episode. Some fans also speculate that the Thirteenth Treasure could be the Compass or Ren, but this is unsupported by the show.

The Dark Treasure: It is also speculated there may be Dark Treasures of Rule or that they can be corrupted, although this is also unsupported by the show. citation needed

Also removed was a species list:

Merian Species

Monkey-birds: Niddler's species. They are winged monkeys with beaks. On Mobo Island, there is a race of monkeybirds who only possess the stumps of their wings, due to their wing growth being stunted by the stecca fog surrounding their island, although after the fog dispersed, Tula was able to jump-start their wings' growth. They all, or at least the monkeybirds on Pandawa, consider the monkeybird Queen of Pandawa to be "The Mother To Us All." It is not known whether she is their biological mother or not.

Dagron: An obvious play on "dragon", they are actually wyverns (flying dragons with no front appendages), but with front paws on their wings. In episode 16, the characters are on an island known as Dagron Island, but the dagrons native to this island have become extinct due to a humanoid known as the Dagron Master hunting and selling them. This Dagron Master uses a magic dagron-hide to transform unfortunate sailors into dagrons to sell to pirates such as Bloth.

Leviathans: Large serpentine sea monsters, similar to sea serpents of Terran mythology. Their skin can withstand Dark Water and they are thus hunted by people who want to make diving suits out of their skins (The Little Leviathan). They can grow to unknown size and most in the show are only medium class. It has been suggested that Bloth's ship is made from Leviathan bones[citation needed but the skull of the ship does not resemble those of the leviathan.

The Constrictus: A "Horror-Beast" that Bloth feeds his disloyal crew and captives to. Ren is one of only two to survive the Constrictus, and the only one to escape them completely intact; the other being the peg-legged pirate Konk. It appears as a giant four-headed, worm-like, sharp-toothed monster. It lives in the bowels of the Maelstrom and is seen nowhere else on Mer.

The Dark Water: Has various sentient qualities and seems acidic in nature, though it has also been seen as having the properties of tar and swallowing its prey whole. It has been known to lunge out at ships and people, as well as engulf entire islands. The show also reveals a master of the Dark Water, the Dark Dweller, who seems to be composed of Dark Water himself, though he is more materialized as an entity. It was aided by Kerroptus; An immense bat like humanoid who was sent to dispose of the thirteen treasures. His mission was postponed when he was absorbed (and thus) imprisoned in the Bell of the First Sound.

The Atani: A tribe of albino dwellers who protect themselves from having to go out into the sunlight by living in a labyrinthian underworld. They are friends of Primus, but very distrustful of the outside world.

Mutants, Aliens, or Humanoid Species: Many of the pirates and citizens of various towns are seemingly non-human. One in particular resembles a hammerhead shark. Bloth may not be human either. The Game Players: Small creatures resembling elves combined with frogs, with either great technology or great magical powers. Only two are featured in the show, and they ensnare Bloth and Ren into a game, thus forcing the enemies to cooperate to ensure their survival. They own/control the Korb (that resemble the imps from the Doom series) who have the ability to extend their limbs over a considerable distance.

The Eighth Treasure: The eighth Treasure of Rule has evolved into a small, dinosaur-like infant known as the Margar. This is presumed to be from the imbalance in the world from the growing Dark Water. Since this is the last treasure discovered, it is unknown if the remaining five have also morphed or if the treasures themselves are all alive. Many more are said to exist.

Revisiting (2018)

edit

Matter was resolved thanks to administrator pastordavid 10 years ago, but recently same person came back and tried to delete parts that were supposed to stay in so I put it back. Conversation from 10 years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests&oldid=217747829 I also put a series bible link at bottom that describes some of the things in the Pirates of Dark Water page. --StoneCold (talk) 18:16, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

The Dagron Master

edit

The name of the episode is "The Dagron Master", but someone keeps changing it to "The Dragon Master". Dagrons are a flying monster with an important role in the series. This is NOT a spelling error of Dragon. Please stop changing it to "Dragon". - Defunctzombie (talk) 23:06, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Contemporaneous sourcing

edit

I have been looking for reviews contemporaneous to the release of the original miniseries in Feb. 1991. The good news is that such sourcing exists. The bad news is that every example I've found is covered under Newspapers.com's Publisher Extra access which I do not have. The same looks to be true of Sept. 1991 coverage of the series' premiere on ABC.

But if anyone has Publisher Extra access to Newspapers.com, my guess is that several contemporaneous reviews of the miniseries can be found, and content added to the 'Reception' section. --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:29, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Request for comment on in-universe elements

edit

Should this article mention in-universe elements of the fictional setting of Mer and ships? soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 08:48, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • If sourced to something, and brief, it's fine – though I think I'd prefer these be sub-sections, probably under 'Premise'. It it is unsourced, then probably not. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:14, 12 March 2023 (UTC) Reply
I feel it should stay as is or be like IJBall put it earlier this year in the premise. An administator in the past said those parts could stay, so it is annoying that for the second time since then there was attempt to delete it by the same user involved in the originally resolved matter. I did add some citations. Talking to editor Red-tailed hawk, he felt there were not copyright violations. StoneCold (talk) 19:07, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
StoneCold, that was fourteen years ago and WP:CONSENSUSCANCHANGE. Adding a reference by http://piratesofdarkwater.net/dictionary/ is not helping. We need independent, reliable sources, not by a dedicated fansite. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 19:38, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
The issue here is not that it's a Primary source – again, short "premise"-type info backed by a primary source would be acceptable – The issue here is indeed that the website in question does appear to be a blog-type site, which is unacceptable as per WP:SELFPUBLISH. This site might be acceptable to link to under 'External links', but cannot be used as an inline source. --IJBall (contribstalk) 20:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have a copy of the officially released The Pirates of Dark Water World Book book released back in 1994 that had this info as well that I switched out the references for. https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/81634/pirates-dark-water-world-book StoneCold (talk) 20:12, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
