chembox

Where should data such as CAS/PubChem numbers, etc, be placed, if a chembox is not appropriate for ions? I find it confusing that some ions (such as certain vitamins, etc.) are given chemboxes, but simple ions such as this one aren't. What is the criteria?—Tetracube (talk) 18:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

It's been a long-standing practice that only compounds are given chemboxes, and are tagged with {{chemicals}}; ions are tagged with {{chemistry}}, and are not given chemboxes. It's been discussed on several occassions at WP:CHEM/CHEMISTRY, but I don't have links for you. Since consensus is dynamic, if you feel strongly about it, perhaps you can raise this issue there. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 18:14, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I don't feel particularly strong about it, just that currently some biochemical molecules are given chemboxes since they are properly regarded as a standalone "substance", even though in nature they really exist as ions. So this distinction between ions and molecules seem somewhat arbitrary and inconsistently applied. As for the CAS and PubChem numbers, I suppose they could be placed in a table somewhere—though that does raise the issue of having a standard template for it, and we're back again at whether to use a chembox, or perhaps to create an ionbox.—Tetracube (talk) 19:00, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
