Why is sale of Halal meat included under the "Controversies" section? edit

Sale of Halal and Kosher meat for the benefit of Muslim and Jewish consumers is explicitly permitted by British law. Like every other food store, Tesco sells many products that are regulated by laws. What's controversial about that? Perhaps whoever put this under "Controversies" does not approve of the law. Or perhaps he (appallingly and disgracefully) does not approve of Muslims. In either case, it is not a Tesco controversy, and does not belong here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Israelgale (talkcontribs) 23:32, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Looking into the matter, it appears the criticism is due to the way the animal is killed, which does not comply with modern animal welfare practises. This is not anti-Muslim, it is anti-animal cruelty. In general, people are uncomfortable with the idea of animals being mistreated during the killing process and suffering stress and pain, so the law is that animals must be stunned before having their throats cut. Halal meat is from animals who are still alive and conscious when they have their throats cut, and it takes from 20 seconds to 2 minutes for a cow to lose consciousness after having its throat cut. Currently the UK allows halal slaughter methods through religious tolerance, though the parliament vote on the matter was very close, and there are continuing calls to enforce humane slaughter. Some countries ban it completely. Surveys indicate that most Muslims are OK with animals being stunned, but kept alive, before having their throats cut, so moving toward a humane slaughter method is probably just a matter of time. List of stores edit

Criticism section edit

Reflecting a little more on the above comment about halal meat in Tesco stores, and reading some of the other items in the Criticism section, I'm thinking that much of that section is WP:UNDUE and some is only tangentially relevant to an article on Tesco. I think this section needs attention. The sub-sections need to be removed anyway, per MOS:BODY as they are too short, inhibiting reading flow, and then the information assessed for how much is appropriate. While the halal "controversy" is based on fact, the essential information more properly belongs in the article on Halal than in the individual articles on each store in the UK that stocks halal meat. SilkTork (talk) 16:26, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

I would support the removal of the Halal controversy as it is not specific to Tesco. Likewise if there are any other sections that are not specific to Tesco I would also support the deletion of those sections. Dormskirk (talk) 21:03, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes I agree 100%. "Critisism of Tesco in the section included residents of Bournville not wanting Tesco to sell alcohol. They don't want ANYONE to sell alcohol, it's got nothing to do with Tesco. Also the section stated "Tesco disabled its online photo site as part of a precautionary security measure" without saying why or even if this was a controversial thing. I think someone with an agenda wrote that section so I've deleted those, along with a bit that said a customer was racist once so Tesco are wrong Sirhissofloxley (talk) 21:19, 22 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Map of Tesco Operations edit

Hi, I notice that the map on this page which shows the countries in which Tesco operates does not include Slovakia, despite it having a presence there. Can it be modified to include it? I would myself but not sure how.

Outdated info in the introduction edit

The introduction claims that Tesco is World's third largest retailer by revenue and links out to a 2010 revenue report (https://web.archive.org/web/20121109113758/http://www.deloitte.com/assets/Dcom-Australia/Local%20Assets/Documents/news-research/Press%20releases/Global%20Powers%20of%20Retailing/Global_Powers_of_Retailing_2010_report.pdf)

However it's 2019 now! The same consulting org has released revenue report 2019 which is available here - https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/global/Documents/Consumer-Business/cons-global-powers-retailing-2019.pdf

This puts Tesco as 10th largest retailer by revenue. Please review and whoever has access to edit, please correct this mistake.

I don't think it is as simple as that. The Deloitte report seems to be quoting net revenues and the wikipedia article is relatively up to date on that (2017 figures) and puts Tesco in 9th place. Dormskirk (talk) 12:03, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

F&F edit

There's no mention of Tesco's clothing line, F&F (formerly Florence & Fred). Tesco also have a homewares brand called Fox Ivy.

According to the Tesco website the range was launched in 2001 see here. I'm not sure where the Florence and Fred names came from, but they currently sell own-brand baby products using the name Fred & Flo. JezGrove (talk) 20:31, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@JezGrove: created a section in article, a section must have been created and deleted at some point odd of no mentions in article, feel free to expand with proper referencing. I have kind of over done my referencing a bit. Chocolateediter (talk) 00:34, 7 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

The 'Notes' tab should be removed edit

In my opinion, the 'Notes' tab should be removed if no information can be added to it as in my opinion it is pointless having an empty tab within the article. Xboxsponge15 (talk) 00:44, 16 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Agreed and removed. Dormskirk (talk) 01:21, 16 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

In the second paragraph of Diversification, there is a link to OneStop. Now that OneStop shops are owned by Tesco, this link is recursive and does not go to an external page. I was going to revert the link to plain text, but I can't do this because the page is locked. Wardle1948 (talk) 13:46, 24 January 2021 (UTC) Wardle1948 (talk) 13:46, 24 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

edit

The logo for Tesco PLC as shown in the Tesco PLC website has inserted "PLC" after the logo. I'm not sure if this should count as a separate logo or just to indicate the name of the company. Is there any sources showing the logo for Tesco plc being just TESCO? --- Mullafacation {talk page|user page} 16:06, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I’m not seeing this? Just the Tesco logo and a banner below that which says PLC. And this is because it’s the corporate site. Anyway, The Sainsbury’s corporate site will have the “J Sainsbury plc” logo, but it’s still more appropriate to have the “Sainsbury’s” logo in that article. Asia edit

The article needs to be updated as it doesn't talk about it dropping out of the Asian market, selling most of its branches to its former Thai franchisee. Jordf32123 (talk) 11:30, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
