First transgender character? edit

Birdo (or Birdetta as she prefers) was first. While not being a playable character in her first appaerance, she has been playable of Nintendo games long before 2020. Initally called "a male who thinks he's female" later games describer as female. Signalling she has since transitioned since her first appaerance in 1988. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.177.156.4 (talk) 07:06, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Additionally, the source to the "first trans character" claim doesn't actually say that. So it's literally something the wiki page editor come up with themselves. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.73.144.19 (talk) 15:18, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

A few sources I have encountered, proclaimed Tyler Ronan as the first transgender protagonist or lead character in AAA game. Which...may be true or verifiable, but we need to look into it further. Haleth (talk) 07:58, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pronoun use & etc edit

@IceWelder: Could you look into the recent page history. I think the game implies that Ollie/Tyler had already made up his mind at that point with the haircut scene and the emotional transition is a process. The need to use those pronouns appears questionable, alternatively, gender neutral pronouns could be used there.

I think it is also relevant to add the writer's name in the case of a narrative driven game. IgelRM (talk) 16:19, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

IgelRM, I haven't played the game, so I don't know much about the plot or characters. The way I know it from real people, the preferred pronouns are used throughout their entire biography, regardless of the time of transition. I don't know whether or how this applies to fictional characters. There are two options, either avoid any kind of pronoun until the transition is mentioned, or mention early on that he is now known as Tyler. I made a quick fix that does the latter (and added some credits the infobox), but I'm not sure whether it is the best solution. Off-topic but related: The plot currently exceeds our 700-word limit by more than 400 words and should be reduced. Regards, IceWelder [] 01:01, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@IceWelder: I have played through all three episodes. What I observed is (and this is kind of OR here) that the game's characters in direct conversation or its codex entries avoid making a direct reference to Ollie by a designated gender. This is likely due to concerns over misgendering. The reliable sources I have seen so far usually skirts the issue of analyzing Tyler as a child as well as their gender status, or avoid referring to Ollie with a specific pronoun, instead primarily focusing on the adult. I suppose I could help with rewriting the summary, unless IgelRM or another user feels strongly about doing so. Haleth (talk) 03:22, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks IceWelder and also Haleth. Re Haleth: You can go ahead with rewriting as far as I'm concerned.
In the infobox, I would add Morgan Lockhart below Stéphane Beauverger (Narrative Director) and replace Dimitri Weideli with Arnaud de Pischoff.
On another topic, I had removed the bit about Remember Me as it felt trivial off-topic. Also I would replace 2020 with "narrative" as the year is mentioned in the 2nd sentence.
The part about the dubs also needs to be update. XboxEra, SpazioGames IgelRM (talk) 18:03, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

My apologies for not looking at the page talk before making my edit regarding this topic. That said, I feel that making the assumption that Tyler was fully aware of an intent to present as more traditionally masculine (“to look more like a boy”) is reaching a bit far. If anyone strongly disagrees with my edit then please revert it and I won’t touch it again. It was poor form for me to edit then look at the page talk. (Thanks to everyone for caring enough to have curated a fantastic article with regard to gender identity!) ChiXiStigma (talk) 16:43, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
