Request Edit - CC-BY English Text edit

Sefaria has English translation of this text, presented in parallel to the original.

The text was published by Metsudah Publications and released into the commons with a CC-BY license in exchange for Sefaria compensating the publisher.

I believe that a link to this would fall under section 2 of WP:ELYES.

I have a COI (I work for Sefaria). My team has discussed it on WikiProject:Judaism and it has been adjudicated and resolved favorably at COIN#Sefaria_requested_edits.

Links should be to [1]

Suggestion: explain the meanings of 4 acronyms in [the section about] "Selichot rites" edit

The section of this article called "Selichot rites" contains a large table, with 9 columns. The column headings for the "even-numbered" columns (the second, the fourth, etc.) each have a "sub-" heading that is displayed as "Day".

Some of the entries in those "even-numbered" ["Day"] columns contain acronyms, such as: RH, YK, FG, and TDR.

I suggest that some clarification should be added, to enable the reader to find out -- if necessary -- what the meanings of those acronyms are (especially "FG" -- meaning "Tzom Gedaliah", or the "Fast of Gedaliah" -- and "TDR" -- meaning [the] "Asseret Yemei HaTeshuvah" -- that is, the "Ten Days of Repentance").

For completeness, it might "also" be advisable to explain the meanings of the acronyms 'RH' and 'YK' (despite the fact that those are probably even more likely to be ... already known to the reader).

There is a good chance that the typical reader of this article will already know that "RH" means "Rosh Hashanah" (the Jewish New Year, at the beginning of the ten days of penitence), and that "YK" means Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement on the 10th day of Tishrei[1]).

However, I believe, based upon some -- (perhaps unscientific) -- anecdotal evidence, that the chances are greater that the reader will have forgotten the meanings -- if he ever knew them -- of "FG" and "TDR".
So -- ('IMHO') -- explaining those two -- "FG" and "TDR" -- is more important than explaining the meanings of "RH" and "YK".
But it would probably be OK -- and, not very difficult -- ! -- to explain all 4 of them. (In the article ... not just here, on the "Talk:" page.)

Any comments? edit

Another idea edit

Is it just me? or, is the comment

(page numbers in square brackets):

misleading and -- in fact -- incorrect? It appears to me, that the actual page numbers, when they are shown at all, are

  • [a] not in square brackets,

and

  • [b] each appear after a colon, that is typically always after a clickable link -- ["displayed" as a superscript number in square brackets] -- and that the clickable link (before the colon) is for a footnote! (right?)

My invitation (or "subsection name") above -- where it says "Any comments?" -- applies as well to this "add-on" (added) sub-section. --Mike Schwartz (talk) 01:02, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
