On races and factions

I find the priority by which races and factions are listed a bit dubious. Murlocs get their own space, but the Titans and Old Gods do not?

Murlocs are more notable, as they have been used by Blizzard as a sort of mascot, and have appeared at events such as BlizzCon as a marketing tool, thus are suitable to be covered in an encyclopedia. The Old Gods and Titans have not, and are not really that notable. Remember, this is an encyclopedia for non-gamers, if you want a comprehensive listing of all the races/factions may I suggest wowwiki, or another fansite? --Taelus (Talk) 07:40, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Worgen in Warcraft III?

I don't remember any Worgen in either Reign of Chaos or The Frozen Throne, they aren't in the creeps list of creeps on the official Battle.net website, and WoWWiki's Worgen article doesn't mention any presence in Warcraft III. I'm pretty sure the anonymous editor is just confused, but if he or is right about them being in Warcraft III, a citation would be appreciated. -- Gordon Ecker (talk) 07:37, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

The first two mentions of the Worgen both came in World of Warcraft, and I have changed the article to reflect this. These two mentions are:

1) The creatures summoned by Archmage Arugal to protect him from the Scourge. This happened after the undead invasion, and was not covered in any of the Warcraft III campaigns set in Lordaeron

2) The creatures summoned by the "dark rider" of Duskwood. Duskwood did not feature in Warcraft III, and this storyline was created for the purpose of quests in World of Warcraft.

I can however see how confusion has arrisen, as recently with the announcement of Worgen as a playable race, Blizzard have gone back and fleshed out their timeline, creating the illusion they were around in Warcraft III. However, whilst they existed in the time period Warcraft III was set in, they were not included in the game, or its expansion set. --Taelus (talk) 10:58, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Murlocs? only D&D pages talk about them...

I wanted to see what was the (geek-)cultural reference of a Murloc was(as most species have a precedent in D&D or earlier such as Tolkein or Lovecraft), but could not find the page for Murlocs nor it is mentioned here (it seems to have been deleted despite there being a referendum voting for keep). I wanted to say, that I think it would be very nice, if there were links to the D&D equivalent if possible in this nice and concise article. --Squidonius (talk) 16:04, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

No Dragons?

Why is there no mention of the Dragon races on this page? The dragon's have an extensive lore and are very interesting. Though off hand I do not know it in depth enough to publish nor would I be able to provide references without looking into it aside from points of interest in World of Warcraft. But their story is great with the different evolutions of dragons all coming from the original species. Then giving birth to the Drakanoid, a humanoid race of dragons. A good point, unfortunately most content about them is currently in-universe by nature. Wrath of the Lich King gave us a bit of content that could be encyclopedic, but really I think Cataclysm will bring us a ton of references, since the game is based around Deathwing, thus we should get a nice group of references regarding the dragons reception and such... Really, I would like to go around and have a big long-term project clean up on these Warcraft articles, but my schedule has been hectic for quite a while. When Cataclysm is out and, effectively, this information becomes up to date, I will probably give the article a good look in. The fact they are redoing all the old world should give us some nice encyclopedic critical/fan reactions to the different characters and races for use here, as well as causing Blizzard to update their websites information so we can reference it. Blood Elf History

The first two paragraphs of Blood Elf history do not reflect the official lore of Blood Elves as presented by Blizzard Entertainment, both on their community website and in-game lore. The author likes to insist upon a certain translation of "sin" to suit what purpose, I don't know. I'm not an official of Blizzard but someone who has taken the time to learn a fair chunk of the lore and history that Blizzard has presented in their interactive story.

This may seem trivial, but it runs counter to the official story written by Blizzard themselves, and I would surmise them to be the authority on this information. You can read it in their official encyclopedia entry on the matter under the subject of Blood Elves. The official, in-game quest even refutes the claims of the author of the first two paragraphs. I cite Lament of the Highborne as an official source. It is an encyclopedic entry of the in-game item which produces the translation for "Belore," which is officially the Thalassian word for the sun. This information also comes directly from the game files themselves, so it can be considered "official" by reasonable standards. The author of the first two paragraphs in the blood elf section of this page keeps insisting that the word "sin" means the sun, which is completely contrary to what Blizzard Entertainment has established. Blizzard also established that the original Thalassian name of the race was "Quel'dorei" which literally means "high born"; and that Kael'thas renamed the survivors "sin'dorei" to mean "born from blood" to reflect their respect of the fallen dead, which comprised 90% of their original population.

I would recommend that a less fancy-minded author rewrite those paragraphs to reflect official lore in this encyclopedia. Thaagthetroll (talk) 19:06, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Race capitalisation

Following the recent capitalisation and re-capitalisation of race names throughout this article (including "Human"), it seems necessary to provide a reference for the non-capitalisation of race names.

Race names are not capitalised by Blizzard Entertainment themselves on their own promotional material, such as on the "Races" section of their website, which extensively demonstrates non-capitalisation of race names. This is also widely accepted as correct practice in the game's community, such as on wowpedia and wowwiki. If necessary, it can also be understood that these are not actual 'races', but in fact separate species (some coming from different galaxies, some non-humanoid, most evolving from completely separate roots or even created artificially). Writing "the Night Elves and Tauren have many things in common" is comparable to writing "the Trees and Frogs all enjoy water". What about the titans?
