GBA Releases?

edit

No one has mentioned any of them in the article yet? I'm surprised. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.247.224.212 (talk) 03:22, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Considering that Level-5 didn't publish their first game until 2006 (that game, itself, being Curious Village), which was long after the death of the GBA, I find myself shocked and appalled that we have failed to mention a game that does not exist. But if you can prove it exists, do so. I'm legitimately curious to see what you mean by this. Hammerbrodude (talk) 05:33, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Spoiler Removal?

edit

Can someone remove these spoiler-filled profiles, or at least edit them so they only say what is known from the beginning. It's ridiculous to have spoilers on the generic page for the series. Spoilers should be on the page for the game itself, if anywhere. It was horrible to come here and have the third game spoiled for me out of nowhere. The rules may allow spoilers, but that's no reason to be inconsiderate with them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.120.164.252 (talk) 02:29, 1 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'd rather have the fangirl crud than all these horribly spoilerific character decriptions. I'm amazed you guys have still left Legal as free of spoilerific description as you have, honestly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.64.202 (talk) 18:09, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Release Dates

edit

Ok guys, someone has Spetember 13 as the release for Diabolical Box. Since Nintendo or Level-5 has yet to confirm this, it was vandalism. So I am going to have to change it on both this page, and the Diabolical Box page. AlexanderLD (talk) 10:30, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Amazon.com slipped up at had Aug 24th posted as the release date. Google has cached the page -- see [1] Johnmora (talk) 04:00, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sources, please?

edit

Curious Village is the only game released in America so far. Are there any sources for the character descriptions for later games? A vampire character seems out of place to me. Alice2 (talk) 00:01, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am sure there are people here who knoe Japanese and have either played the game or read previews. I highly doubt that false information like that would exist for this long.--76.66.189.24 (talk) 22:00, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Specter/Devil's Flute

edit

AlexanderLD has stated that the press are referring to the game as Specter's Flute, but the first I heard of it was on wiki. IGN is calling it Devil's Flute, some pages on Wiki refer to it as Devil's Flute yet it keeps being changed to Specter's Flute.

The press seem to be giving it both names (I guess, since gametrailer's calls it Specter's Flute) but I've seen more places referring it to Devil's flute, like Joystiq, IGN, 1up.com etc. Earisu |Talk 19:54, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Episode Numbering

edit

I'm adding episode numbering to the game titles in the Plot section as in the Japanese Wiki page for Professor Layton: [2] Cocomonk22 (talk) 08:05, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The numberings are based off of this page: [3] Cocomonk22 (talk) 08:05, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The first movie is also listed as Episode 1.5, but I'll leave that section as is unless anyone wants to change it a bit. Cocomonk22 (talk) 08:05, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Revision needed?

edit

Hello, not sure if this is intended or not but the "Plot" section of the article contains the following: "this game shows the professors mad puzzle solving attacks for the first time. he runs around saint mystere and solves puzzles.and more puzzles. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and more. and guess what? and more you presume? no, he's already solved enough puzzles for a couple of days." This should probably be corrected but I don't really have the proper skill to do so. Anyway, just jumped out at me. 68.82.238.70 (talk) 23:39, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nice spot. That was only added earlier today, and was just added in to a section which previously just contained the link to the game's article. I just went ahead and reverted the edit. :) Dreaded Walrus t c 01:31, 11 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Professor Layton Character Article

edit

I think that an article based on the character of Professor Layton should be created. Other Nintendo series articles like the Mario series article has a Mario article, the Zelda series page has a Link article, etc. I believe that the series is popular enough for Professor Layton to have his own character article. Please take my suggestion into consideration. : ) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.60.243.144 (talk) 22:08, 30 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to see this if only because Franziska von Karma gets an article, but I'm not entirely sure what could be added. Hammerbrodude (talk) 13:51, 30 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
There's a character article on the Layton Wiki (I helped create it).[4]. If an article was created, it could be similar to this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.60.248.57 (talk) 21:24, 18 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hm. If I can find a just a little more insight on the development of the character, I believe we would actually have the material to pull it off. Again, he's at least a more complex character than Lady von Whippenburg (I mean, given, I love her and all, but still...). Hammerbrodude (talk) 13:01, 20 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Number of puzzles in The Unwound Future

edit

The article says that both the second and third games have 153 puzzles but in the UK the Lost Future is being advertised as having over 165 puzzles. Is the article wrong, the advertisement wrong or have more been added for Europe? eyeball226 (talk) 15:18, 29 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

There are 168 puzzles in Unwound Future- and for that matter, 170 in the fourth game. I've edited this, though admittedly I'm a bit surprised nobody else has done it by now with the game having been out so long. Hammerbrodude (talk) 13:50, 30 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reception

edit

I quote: "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box was considered to be a major improvement from the original." - yet both games have scored roughly the same on Metacritic and GameRankings (as a matter of fact, Diabolical Box is rated 1% lower than the original on both sites). Judging by those aggregate scores, these games demonstrate a consistency of reception rather than "major improvements". -220.245.253.81 (talk) 07:21, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Honestly, the entire article should probably be rewritten (as, honestly, is the case for a majority of the series.) I've got a bunch of great sources for insight on the series-possibly even enough to get it to GA-but I'm currently focused on Professor Layton and the Last Specter. So I guess I'll make it my next goal and do it whenever that's done with. Hammerbrodude (talk) 05:41, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nomenclature.

edit

I'm planning to go through and update these articles on by one to ensure quality. But there's one detail that makes me a little... hesitant, to do much to alter them. Namely: the names of the games. In particular, I'm referring to the names of the second, third, and fourth games of the series, which have had different titles in every region. We currently use the North American names, but we've never actually discussed which names we should use (Diabolical Box was claimed by a ninja-fast move after the NA name was revealed, and we've since just rolled with it.), so I figure I might as well get this discussion over with now.

The argument for European names: First off, the elephant in the room; the games take place in England (three of four at least in part in London!) and the main characters are all ridiculously British. Secondly, the games seem to sell far better in Europe than they do in the Americas: though VGchartz is an unreliable source possibly off by a large margin, I would trust even it with margins ranging from Curious Village's 1-2 ratio of NA-EU sales through to Unwound Future's 1-4 ratio. From a more reliable source, Diabolical Box was mostly just another blip on the charts of the Americas but was the fastest-selling DS title ever in the United Kingdom, a record that has survived even the release of Pokemon White. Last Specter seems to be following in these footsteps; two days after launch it was the seventh-best selling game in the region and the third-highest on an individual console after only two versions of Modern Warfare 3. In the latter layout, the game did not reach the top five in the Americas, although there was no data for the former measure. So, Europe has association with England and most of the game's sales.

The argument for North American names: The most obvious reason is probably that we already use them and if we'd change the names we'd have to rewrite most of the articles. Admittedly, I was planning on doing that anyway, but we'd need someone to translate my Americanspeak into British English. Furthermore, America's names are usually the first announced, making them a bit more recognizable. The fanbase uses them interchangeably, though tends to lean slightly toward the NA titles; I would expect this is likely because of the fact that Wikipedia uses them (and as such, so do many other, smaller sites who base information off of Wikipedia.) NA also usually has boxarts that show more of the main 'artwork' of the game. To recap: North America has the first announced name, box art clarity, and the bonus of not having to mess with everything.

Just to make things awkward: There seems to be no region more 'loyal' to the Japanese name than any other. Akuma no Hako is "Devil's Box"; North America translated it mostly literally "Diabolical (adg, pertaining to the Devil) Box, whereas Europe has "Pandora's Box". This is flipped for Majin no Fue ("Specter's Flute"); North America has "Last Specter", whereas Europe has the more accurate "Spectre's Call". Both regions did weird things with Saigo no Jikan Ryoko, but this is probably because "Last Time Travel" is an awkward title in English. Secondly, Australia has opted to use the American version of Last Specter while it uses the European versions of the first three games. Finally, Google is also inconsistent, though it seems to like Europe more over time:

  • Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box: 4m
    • Professor Layton and Pandora's Box 250k
  • Professor Layton and the Unwound Future: 575k
    • Professor Layton and the Lost Future: 800k
  • Professor Layton and the Last Specter: 1.4m
    • Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call 2.8m

In closing: I have no idea. I'm leaning toward converting to the European versions of the names, but it seems as though it could go either way at the current time. If we do switch them, Curious Village and Eternal Diva will be mostly unaffected by the change, as would other articles relating to the series excluding mentions of the aforementioned three games. Mask of Miracle may need to change in the future, but that's a tentative title anyhow so it's likely being moved eventually regardless. Emmy Altava 06:37, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • By the way, this isn't a formal proposal. This is merely a discussion. A discussion about whether or not a proposal would be warranted. There's no countdown clock or anything; if we come to a consensus in favor of Europe over a period of time, then perhaps a merge could be proposed later down the road and refer back to this. Currently, this is just sort of a let's-get-this-out-of-the-way firestarter. Emmy Altava 06:55, 30 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that is necessary here since the general rule is to use the first name used for the article and in this case it was the US version each time. AS far as I know exceptions are not made for sales. In my experience we usually use the European names if, that name was used first, or the name is the same as the existing Japanese version (Ie Yoshi's Universal Gravitation). Neither is the case here. Also if you plan to use sales for a move request a reliable source must first be provided of the sale numbers presented will likely not be accepted due to being unsourced. Finally, I don't know where you plan to get sales figures but it you are planning to use VG Chartz your request like likely to fail since that has been determined to be a unreliable source by WP:VG for sales figures and will be rejected for that reason.--70.24.207.225 (talk) 06:11, 26 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Layton vs. Phoenix Wright canon?

edit

I am just curious would Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright be considered canon in the Layton universe? I am sure this game is seen as canon in the Ace Attorney universe taking place sometime after the events of Trials and Tribulations, but not sure if it is canon here or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.9.245.255 (talk) 02:55, 23 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

edit

I suggest adding a few of the missing main characters — like Chelmey — to the characters section of this article, from List of Professor Layton characters. The latter half of this list is pointless. Many of the characterisations are simply spoilers past a few words. There exists a Layton wiki with encompassing descriptions of the characters. Also see: Talk:List of Professor Layton characters#Merger proposal. --Mr. Magoo (talk) 23:47, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Lady Layton main line?

edit

Currently, the entry about the upcoming Lady Layton (2017) video game is under Setting and characters -> Spin off. Is this game really a spin off if it plays like a traditional PL game? I think we can say for certain if we know if this game takes place in the universe of the earlier PL games, though I'm not entirely sure. Aeruon (talk) 16:36, 27 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Professor Layton's catchphrase; is this official?

edit

I was almost certain it was something along the lines of "every puzzle has an answer" before reading the article, specifically the Professor Layton section under "Setting and Characters." The article states "that's what a gentleman does" is the catchphrase of Layton. It fits well with his personality, but I swear I've heard quotes revolving around the phrase "every puzzle has an answer" more than that. EmorhC elgooG (talk) 02:35, 13 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

These descriptions of the characters are really flimsily sourced to begin with. I don't see why there can't be two phrases. Mr. Magoo (talk) 04:32, 5 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
You're thinking of it the wrong way - unsourced "catchphrases" shouldn't be here in the first place.--IDVtalk 10:25, 5 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
There does exist some fan site coverage of the catchphrases however. From what I remember sometimes even such fringe coverage is accepted. Mr. Magoo (talk) 13:45, 5 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
