Needs more independent coverage

The console was announced today and the only available information comes from Wired magazine exclusive interview and other magazines reporting on it. Let's wait for more independent coverage of this topic. Interview Anton.bersh (talk) 19:33, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

Console wasn't even directly announced or named, it still amounts to leaks and hints. Far WP:TOOSOON. -- ferret (talk) 21:14, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

@Anthony Appleyard: Not sure what the history is here because of the histmerge, but I think this needs to be moved back to draft and the mainspace article should redirect to PlayStation. Very crystal bally, as the product hasn't been finished yet. TarkusABtalk 21:33, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

The article is in a poor state at the moment. I agree. — Niche-gamer 21:48, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

This fails CRYSTAL. What was in the Wired interview gave reason to toss the "Future hardwre" section I put up at the main PlayStation article, but not for a standalone on the console when they said its not even named. --Masem (t) 15:06, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

I've reverted the page moves and restored the draft to draftspace. -- ferret (talk) 15:38, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Reassessment on independent article

@Masem, TheJoebro64, Sergecross73, David Fuchs, Niche-gamer, and Sjones23: Hopefully didn't miss anyone. This has been un-redirected today, and I've already tried to clean up several issues. The lead has lots of issues, the history bulk seems to be from the redirect target, then the rest of the article is unsourced information on release date, game list and pricing. Is this ready for prime time? -- ferret (talk) 16:13, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

I nixed the game list (the only game 100% assured as a PS5 title is Godfall), and the prices as those were only sourced to rumors and not from any good reliable source. But otherwise I think as a independent article, it is fine now. As long as we don't assert 9th gen yet. --Masem (t) 16:32, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
@Masem: Ninth gen is sneaking in everywhere, it has categories and templates. I've given up. -- ferret (talk) 16:36, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Undenible we will have ninth gen soon, and it would be silly to not believe PS5 would be classified as such.. but again, we shouldn't be jumping the gun to call it that until there are hard specs given by Sony and people are making comparisons to the Xbox 4th gen line. --Masem (t) 16:40, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
I don’t oppose the PS5 article in its current state, though I still don’t think we’re ready for a ninth gen article... Sergecross73 msg me 16:57, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I do not reasonably expect a 9th gen article to be possible until after at least E3 this year. --Masem (t) 17:16, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

i want to add some leaks about ps5
Not done We don't add leaks unless they are backed by major industry sources (like Wall Street Journal). I am aware of the leaks related to a big news day , launch window and price, and we're not touching those as they originated from 4chan. --Masem (t) 18:25, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

I support that this talk page needs a banner for saying that there is to be no mention of the phrase "Playstation 6" on this talk page except in response to hearing that there's official info that that console is out. Any suggestions?? Georgia guy (talk) 01:35, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

What are you even talking about? No one has ever mentioned that and there's zero reason for a banner. -- ferret (talk) 01:43, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm sure it's likely that someone will. Georgia guy (talk) 01:48, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
I mean, it’ll probably come up here and there, but I doubt it’s going to be a frequent enough issue that would require a banner. I don’t even know what people would talk about. We hardly know what a PS5 is, let alone a PS6. There’s nothing to even talk about. And there likely won’t be for years. Sergecross73 msg me 02:13, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

"Digital" games

"support for both digital and disc-based games" - Will the PS5 disc based games be analog media? 74.192.145.65 (talk) 03:44, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

lol Most Wikipedians tend to parrot the slang of the masses, such as "digital game" instead of "downloadable game", or "title" instead of "game". I've never seen anyone even question the obvious error, with the implication of .....analog games. It's disgustingly illogical, sloppy, and especially needless. — Smuckola(talk) 04:37, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Games

There are numerous issues with this section. Firstly, the April 2019 Mark Cerny Wired magazine interview does not quote Cerny stating Sony specifically was planning to release new games for both consoles. It's the author Peter Rubin himself who writes "As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console." This is a reasonable expectation in keeping with past console transitions, particularly for games developed by third-party developers. However there is nothing in the source interview that supports our article stating Mark Cerny "believed Sony" was planning to release "several new games" for both PS4 and PS5.

Secondly, the "binary choice" Jim Ryan talks about in the June 2019 interview refers to the fear of severance by leaving your friends and games behind when transitioning to the latest console.

Typically, the launch of a new video game console is a major transition, when old games and your progress in them are left behind in favor of the latest and greatest. Sony wants to put an end to that. [...] "Whether it's backwards compatibility or the possibility of cross-generational play, we'll be able to transition that community to next-gen," [Ryan] said. "It won't be a binary choice about whether you have to be ether on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship."

Jim Ryan isn't promising all future Sony games will release on both PS4 and PS5. Nowhere does he say that. He's saying you can still play your existing catalog of PS4 games on PS5 via backward compatibility, or freely switch back and forth between consoles with features like cross-progress and cross-platform voice chat. "It won't be a binary choice about whether you have to be ether on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship."

My immediate proposal is to strip things back and keep it simple. We can expand on cross-generational play and what that means for gamers but we must do so from a body of text that strictly reflects the sources. — Niche-gamer 14:09, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

I see where you're coming from, but I get the impression that more media was taking the 2019 comments to be a transition like MS was offering. But that said, until we see that reflected in any other sources, then removing them for now is fine, though I would suggest adding back that Sony was looking to the cross-generation play factors after stating Ryan's more recent comment. --Masem (t) 14:20, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
The impression is easily gained from the 2019 Wired interview that Sony were planning games for both consoles. When we revisit the interview it becomes clear the author was talking more generally. Later the same year, journalist Jason Schreier revealed that Sony was planning to have PS5 exclusive games ready for launch. So what we really needed was an explicit statement from Sony detailing their plans. Jim Ryan recently provided us with a definitive answer. I'll work on the cross-generation aspect shortly. It's notable enough. — Niche-gamer 14:43, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Not done We cannot just add a non-free image of the console, as this is against policy. --Masem (t) 01:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

A note on the image

Per WP:NFCC#1 because we know the system will be out soon - within 4-5 months into consumers hands, and that means sooner into demo displays and the like, this means we know we can get a free image of the console sooner than later, and so a non-free cannot be used here at this point. It would be different if the console was >6 months (roughly the break point). --Masem (t) 01:21, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

The rational of why we can wait for an image is past practice but comes from the main WMF meta:Resolution:Licensing policy that NFC is based on, specifically point #3: Such EDPs must be minimal. Their use, with limited exception, should be to illustrate historically significant events, to include identifying protected works such as logos, or to complement (within narrow limits) articles about copyrighted contemporary works. An EDP may not allow material where we can reasonably expect someone to upload a freely licensed file for the same purpose, such as is the case for almost all portraits of living notable individuals. Any content used under an EDP must be replaced with a freely licensed work whenever one is available which will serve the same educational purpose. - my emphasis. We know that when the console is out, a free image will be made (in fact we can reasonably expect this from user Evan-Amos who has taken nearly all of our console pictures as free images. That might not happen until early 2021, but we can reasonable say that within the next 3-5 months that either: a Wikipedia will get their hands on a PS5 console and can take a picture of it and upload it for free, or 2) a Wikipedia can go to a PS5 event/demo station at a GameStop or equivalent and get a picture of it. That period is within fair game to wait for the free image that "we can reasonable expect someone to upload a freely licensed file" so we cannot use a non-free at this time. This is standard NFCC practice. --Masem (t) 01:54, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

History should not include politics and protests for media attention which have nothing to do with the actual history of this product. The following statement should be erased... A major game library showcase for the PlayStation 5 had been planned for June 4, 2020, but was postponed until June 11 in light of events due to the George Floyd protests. This presentation also premiered the external design of the PlayStation 5.[11][12][13][14] 216.8.133.137 (talk) 01:43, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Home video game console or subclass of home video game console?

According to the PlayStation 5's entry on Wikidata, this console is not a home video game console, but a subclass of home video game console. This doesn't make any sense for me at all. Can someone explain me?-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 19:48, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

That's not how to read the Wikidata entry. Look at how Wikidata defines "subclass" here [[1]], it basically mean that the PS5 is a member of the class of "home video game consoles" alongside the PS4, the Xbox One, etc. --Masem (t) 20:21, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

PS5 backwards compatibility

I have a question, didn't they originally say that the PS5 was supposed to be backwards compatible with all PlayStation systems (1→4)? I, for some reason, remember that was what Sony said when they originally announced the system, but now (it seems) it will only be backwards compatible with PS4 games and nothing else (which is great), but it I don't know maybe I'm mistaken. -- sion8   talk page 06:34, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Our section on backward compatibility needs improvement. The top 100 games was intended to serve as a snapshot to illustrate how Sony's backward compatibility work is going. The system itself will be compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games at launch. Some of the references have been superseded following Sony's clarification. — Niche-gamer 10:27, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

So Sony has so far announced, that regarding older downloadable games, 15 games will be available within the PlayStation Plus Collection.1 But this is not about games, we have already purchased, they only offer a kind of package that can be purchased. So they still haven't commented on whether I can play already purchased downloaded games on my account on the new system. Multiple sources, both a Sony engineer and AMD, as well as Digital Foundry, the core of the 'gpu' is of the nature of RDNA 1 with *some* specifications being compatible or effectively RDNA 2.0.

Hardware section broke up into paragraphs

One of the main things I edited on this article was breaking up the Hardware section into neat sub-sections. However, a user keeps reverting this. I'm curious as to why. The hardware section of every other console article is broken up into sub-sections and the way it was before, without paragraphs or sub-sections, was a total mess. I also re-ordered some of the information to make it flow more logically.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=PlayStation_5&oldid=989297903 vs https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=PlayStation_5&oldid=989312550

Just that the first time you had done this, you pulled in a number of sources that we considered unreliable for WP; the second time doesn't do that so that's better - most of the character text addition appears to be in the archiveurl/date stuff related to that. The new changes actually seem fine. However, the only concern I have is that when we talk consoles, the big thing is the CPU/GPU and those other internals - size and shape are generally the last thing of importance, so the order is off (even if that's how its done on other console articles). --Masem (t) 15:29, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Only because I'm coming from trying to fix up the Wii page, I'm going to strongly causing about including every PS5 sales datapoint we can put into this article. As a note, we can put sales data details as published by Sony in their quarterlies over at Commons, as I have done with the Wii sales date and probably will do eventually with all of Nintendo's newer consoles (see c:Data:Wii sales.tab) that data can then be pulled to make graphs in mainspace here (see Wii#Sales) and we can summarize key milestones. We can't do that with the Xbox line since MS will not release official sales #s.

Physical/Digital split

Using, say, the Famitsu data, should we summarise, perhaps in parentheses, that 88% of sales were of the disc-based system?

Currently, it is this. The argument doesn’t appear to be “is it good”, but rather, “is it better than nothing”? The image creator says yes. I think it is better than nothing though perhaps we could go with a cropped version? Better, but still not quite good enough. The domestic background still looks amateurish. What you need is a studio backdrop to place a solid color background behind the PS5.
Unfortunately, it's rare for amateur photographers to own their own backdrop, even a miniature tabletop one. Good backdrops are expensive, they take up lots of space, and they're a hassle to set up and use. I've shot photos for WP for 15 years and I still don't own one, since nearly all my WP photos are of natural scenery or building exteriors. --Coolcaesar (talk) 18:16, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@Coolcaesar: I don't have the resources to take a professional photograph like that. The closest thing I could do is unplug it and put it in front of the blank portion of a white wall. This picture is of a Ps5 in a home, similar to the Series X infobox image. With that being said, is this acceptable until we get one from Evan-Amos? --Osh33m (talk) 20:50, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
Do you have a solid color bedsheet or similar? It doesn't have to be white, but something that simply hides the background and would be a neutral color against the PS5? (I see no problem with the curtain in the background in the newest image, it's clearly better than zero picture and its not like we're getting privacy details of the home here). --Masem (t) 21:04, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
@Masem: I checked every bedroom in the house and I don't, unfortunately. The only other thing I could offer is to unplug it and move the table in front of the television, so that a picture could be taken with a black background. Although there could probably be a lot of reflection from the blank screen.
Honestly, if you are content with the current image, then I say let's keep it until we have something better from a professional. It actually did take quite a bit of effort for me to position it in that way without anything obstructive or distracting in the background. --Osh33m (talk) 04:39, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Error in chart

In the top chart on the article, under "Memory", it reads:

512 MB DDR4 RAM (for background tasks)[1]

This is incorrect. The 512 MB DDR4 RAM is a DRAM cache for the SSD. It's sitting right next to the SSD controller, after all, and the traces lead directly to it and nowhere else (you can see this in the article that was cited).

Now, Sony hasn't come out and said what that memory chip is for. So I can't prove that it is DRAM cache for the SSD, other than to say that it is the only thing that makes sense. But there is also no proof that it is "for background tasks", because Sony has not stated what the memory chip is for.

I propose that the text " (for background tasks)" be removed from the chart, on the grounds that there is no indication that this memory is used for background tasks, and there is indication that it is used for something else (it's memory for the SSD controller).

In a perfect world, the "512 MB DDR4 RAM" part would also be removed (we don't say that your computer has an extra 1GB of ram if you have an SSD with a DRAM cache), but that would cause an argument so I'm not asking for it to be removed.

Hardware revision

In the "Hardware" section under "Hardware revisions" the article claims the new revision runs hotter, but this conclusion is based off false information and inaccurate testing methods. The test in question used a heat camera on the rear vent showing a higher heat output (which according to the laws of thermodynamics would mean more heat is being removed from the SoC) but anyone who knows anything about testing computer hardware knows that the proper way to test SoC thermals is by attaching a heat sensor at or near the SoC, which the test in question did not do. The tester also noted that the new revision is also quieter, because of how the PS5 handles thermals this would mean the main chip is cooler (as the fan ramps up when heat is higher, the PS5 doesn't throttle clocks due to heat so this does not factor in) which makes sense when looking at my previous point.

What I suggest is removing this unconfirmed information which is questionable at best until proper tests are conducted to confirm the actual state of the SoC in the new revision. Chrisxdxl (talk) 17:06, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Done though the rest of the revision information is still visibly true. --Masem (t) 17:21, 3 September 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, although ironically proper testing has just been published by Digital Foundry and Nexus Gamer confirming what I already suspected (I'm sure you are aware of this though as the article does now state this). I do agree that the rest of the information was still completely true, I was only referring to the heat situation. Thank you again for taking the time to read this and edit the article, I appreciate it. Chrisxdxl (talk) 23:37, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

With Digital Foundary, which is an RS itself, that report is sufficient to explain that there's no noticeable difference in the heat sink behavior, which has been added to the article already. --Masem (t) 23:45, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

Region-based Save Data Transfer between games & accounts

Found on Insomniac Support: https://support.insomniac.games/hc/en-us/articles/360052412171-How-do-I-upload-transfer-my-save-from-PS4-to-PS5-

It happens when I tried play Miles Morales Asian ver. in US account and try to transfer save data there. Backward compatibility

How many PS4 games are available in digital download of PS5? Striker2020 (talk) 05:56, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

All PS4 games have a digital version at release to my knowledge, but some are no longer on the store (delisted), so if we take the total number of PS4 titles (3301) add PSVR (666), subtract the number of delisted games (162) and then subtract incompatible games (note this list reduces as backwards compatibility improves) that are still available on the store (6) then you get 3799. But we aren't done as their are PS2 and arcade games to consider as well, so we add PS2 games playable on PS4 (54) and then arcade games (172 "Arcade Archives", 108 "ACA Neo Geo" and 4 "Arcade Game Series") which gives us a total of 4137. This is still incomplete and only takes individual products into account, it does not account for a single product with multiple games (such as "Batman: Return to Arkham", "Bioshock: Collection" or "Arcade Classics Anniversary Edition" for example) as creating such a list would be a truly massive undertaking.

TLDR; 3799 or 4137 depending on if you include PS2 and arcade titles that are playable on PS4. Chrisxdxl (talk) 00:28, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

The Standard PS5

The PlayStation 5 (PS5 price) is a video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The standard PS5 model was released on November 12, 2020, in select regions, and on November 19, 2020, globally. Here are some key features and specifications of the standard PS5: Design: The standard PS5 disc edition features a sleek, modern design with a black and white color scheme. It is larger than the PS4 and stands vertically. Processor and Graphics: The PS5 Amazon is powered by a custom AMD Zen 2 processor with 8 cores at 3.5GHz and an AMD RDNA 2 GPU with 36 compute units at 2.23GHz. This provides improved performance and graphics capabilities over the previous generation. Storage: The standard PS5 comes with an 825GB solid-state drive (SSD) for storage. This provides faster load times and improved overall system performance compared to traditional hard drives. Games: The PS5 is compatible with most PS4 games and features a growing library of new games designed specifically for the console. Some notable titles include Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon's Souls, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Controller: The PS5 features a new controller called the DualSense, which includes haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for a more immersive gaming experience. Overall, the standard PS5 is a powerful and capable gaming console that provides an excellent gaming experience with improved performance, graphics, and load times. Adaptive Triggers

"The DualSense controller has adaptive triggers with force feedback through voice coil actuators that can change the resistance to the player as necessary, supporting experiences such as virtually drawing an arrow from a bow."

The cited source for this states the voice coil actuators are a separate-something. In reality, the Adaptive Triggers utilize DC motors (with "worm gears") to vary trigger resistance. The DualShock/DualSense Wikipedia article states this correctly, and should be changed here accordingly.

While were at it, "virtually drawing an arrow from a bow" doesn't quite convey what's being done for the player/user. I'd suggest adding "and allowing the player to feel the tension of the string being drawn", or something like that. Also, is "drawing an arrow from a bow" the correct language for the act of readying an arrow on a bow string? I guess I feel like it should ultimately read: "virtually drawing the string of a bow, in order to fire an arrow, and conveying the tension of the string to the player through the trigger". 2600:6C40:600:1B62:D028:54F4:7393:B94B (talk) 07:02, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

Graphics is RDNA 2 or RDNA 1

My opinion is that before the PS5 console was released, Sony announced it as RDNA 2-based, but the specifications were changed and the actual console has Custom RDNA 1.

Prior to the launch of the PS5 console, Sony announced that it was RDNA 2-based. >AMD Radeon™ RDNA 2-based graphics engine

>Ray Tracing Acceleration

>Variable frequency, up to 2.23 GHz (10.3 TFLOPS)

https://blog.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/

However, the Specifications in the console manual it as RDNA-based.

>GPU: 10 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon™ RDNA-based graphics engine

https://www.playstation.com/content/dam/global_pdc/en/corporate/support/manuals/ps5-docs/1200a/EN_FR_ES_AMER_CFI-1215A_Safety_Guide_Web_01.pdf

@Ferret said "RDNA 2" belongs to the "RDNA" family, so the "2" was omitted. Plus reliable sources of disassembly information. https://hothardware.com/news/sony-playstation-5-independent-teardown-ifixit

In my opinion, the CPU is listed as AMD Ryzen "Zen2" and will not be unintentionally omitted. As for the disassembly source, iFixit seems to have believed Sony's announcement. At least it is not stamped on the CHIP.

You're putting a lot of weight on a basic specification table that simply omits a version number, versus numerous reliable sources and public announcements by Sony. There is zero reason to believe this console actually contains a RDNA 1 and Sony stated the wrong thing repeatedly over the years. You may not be aware, but the only RDNA integrated Zen2 APUs use RDNA 2. There are no RDNA 1 Zen2 APUs. And, AMD themselves claim it's RDNA 2.-- ferret (talk) 12:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
I agree that Sony and AMD have announced in the past that they will adopt RDNA 2. I have looked for announced by the company in the 2023 and I'm not found any. The most recent source I could find is the basic specification. つきみんく (talk) 09:20, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
.... The tweet I linked is from 2021, after the console was released in 2020. This was not a "plan to adopt". -- ferret (talk) 13:20, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
There actually is 1 Zen 2 APU that doesn't support the full RDNA 2 feature set: the one in the PlayStation 5, its a custom chip. Yeah, it isn't a clean RDNA 1 platform either as it supports *most* of RDNA 2's capabilities, but if you'd want to run something that used the full capabilities of RDNA 2 on it, it wouldn't work.--YannickFran (talk) 07:40, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Correct, it's a custom solution from early in RDNA2's release, but even there the developer says "Based on RDNA2 with more features added". To call it based on RDNA1 when all reliable sourcing says RDNA2 would be a WP:V failure. -- ferret (talk) 13:58, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
