Slightly high failure rate?

I have read in this article that the average failure rate is around 10% which - also mentioned - is still considered "normal" for consumer electronics. However - even for a console with an optical drive this is quite high. The paragraph about reliability is linked to souces, but the wording sounds a bit like a press statement from Sony. It should be reworded more neutral, my suggestion would be to remove statements like "this is still normal" and let the reader decide himself. Personally i believe the figures are even higher as mathematically for the "pre-slim" models the figures can only go up. The high number of "Yellow light of death" failures appearing after the warranty coverage runs out has even lead to a whole "YLOD fixing" industry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.189.154.87 (talk) 23:22, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

The wording for "this is still normal" is possibly a little informal (assuming it is a quote from the page and not a paraphrase) but assuming it is accurate there is no "let the reader decide themself" - it either is normal or isn't and cannot be a matter of opinion.
You can believe anything you want about the figures, but other than those released by Sony (which are within the normal range for electronic devices as far as we know), the only "evidence" for the failure rate we have is people complaining on the internet, which is hardly an accurate or meaningful way to gather data. Bear in mind those who have been bitten by the YLOD are likely to be a lot more vocal (and therefore noticeable) than those who haven't because those who haven't have nothing to complain about. This artificially skews things and causes you to perceive a higher rate than what is actually the case.
Also, there isn't a "YLOD fixing industry"; there may be technicians who will fix broken PS3s, but AFAIK there aren't any companies that specialise in it - it would be far to specific a field to be worth it. Sure, there may be a console fixing industry (that fix anything from RRODs to broken PS2 disk drives), but nothing that specific.
Alphathon™ (talk) 00:14, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
I have to disagree with you, there really is a YLOD fixing industry. They sell videos and all kinds of things to help people reflow the system themselves. However, it should be noted that the YLOD is reported at 1% - 1.2% When I saw it 3 months or so ago. Most YLOD happen on Launch Consoles that have the hardware iOP, due to over heating. The chips actually start to un-soldier themselves due to the heat of these extra processors. The current consoles do not have this issue at all. I have had both a launch 60 gig version YLOD on me and a developer console has YLOD on me, but none of my newer versions have givin me any issues. If you would like to write a section about it, go for it, it might help people, but the failure rate is really low overall, but really high when talking about launch consoles only. BTW,.. I am NOT the original poster in this topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.160.142.169 (talk)
I still don't think there's an industry built up around it, but I suppose that's more of a semantic disagreement than anything. Also, I'm fairly sure they don't start to de-solder themselves - that would require temps of several 100s of degrees (Celsius, I don't do Fahrenheit), which is implausible at best. As I understand it what happens is the heat causes expansion/warping of the board, which cracks the solder, therefore making the connection intermittent or breaking it all together.
"If you would like to write a section about it, go for it, it might help people" That depends what you mean. If you meant a description of specific issues like those you mentioned they would have to be:
  1. well sourced from (relatively) mainstream media. This is not to get the details, but to satisfy notability requirements (the failure rate would suggest that it is not worthy of it's own section but only maybe a sentence or two… if a failure rate for 60gigs can be found then that might be notable if it is above average)
  2. carefully written - wikipedia is not a how-to, so providing such tutorials or guides is against policy.

FY2010 Q2 Worldwide Sales figures have been released

Sony has just released its Q2 figures today and Q2 saw 3.5 million units sold worldwide. Might want to update the page to reflect that. (Psychoneko (talk) 07:45, 29 October 2010 (UTC))

Hello again. I think you misunderstand how HDMI certification works. It is quite possible that a device is 1.3 but does not support any functions above 1.2 (for example) - it is all to do with how the hardware works. To put it another way, HDMI 1.4 is a maximum spec, and any device that supports parts of that spec (up to a sufficient standard) and meats the hardware requirements can classed as 1.4. That said, and as I said on your talk page, it should certainly be made clear in the article that it supports 3D, 1080p, LPCM audio, various bitstream audio formats etc, rather than implying it supports the absolute max 1.3a and/or 1.4 covers. Alphathon™ (talk) 21:57, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Hi, would you kindly check the [minim ] requirements? Or do you have some revert [logic]? Well, it is late nigth, bye and thanks for your contribution. -Jack007- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jack007 (talkcontribs) 22:23, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, there are no "minimum" specs for 1.3 (specifically, rather than just HDMI as a whole), and the only 1.3 capability it supports is Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreaming (which is only on the slim models). All 1.3 capabilities appear to be optional. It's more along the lines that the hardware being used is capable of the bandwidth requirements of 1.3 (10.2 Gbit/s), even if it isn't utilised. Likewise for 1.4, with the only supported capability being 3D. Alphathon™ (talk) 23:11, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
By the way, if you want to link to a wikipedia page, the easiest way is to type the name of the article in double square-brackets like so: [[minimum]] (shows up as minimum). There is no need to type out the URL of the page. If you wish to use a different heading, you can use a "piped link", like this: [[minimum|minim]] (shows up as minim but links to minimum). Unable to download as PDF

When I try to download the article as PDF, I get the following message: "WARNING: Article could not be rendered - ouputting plain text. Potential causes of the problem are: (a) a bug in the pdf-writer software (b) problematic Mediawiki markup (c) table is too wide"

I have been able to circumvent the problem to the first 2 line s of the "Model comparison" table, but I haven't been able to correct the problem using the wiki syntax. Maybe someone more experienced could fix this? Mstempin (talk) 17:22, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

How are you downloading it as a PDF? I'm not aware of an official download tools (doesn't mean they don't exist of course). It'd help if we could reproduce the problem.
BTW, circumvent doesn't mean what I think you think it means (I think you think it means to narrow down, but it's more along the lines of to work around or bypass. See: Wiktionary:Circumvent)
Alphathon™ (talk) 17:43, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
The PDF download tool exists indeed, and this is far from an "exotic" or "unofficial" tool: In the left menu, just go down to the "Print/export" heading and choose the "Download as PDF" item.
I am particularly interested in this function, as I plan to compile a PDF book on the video game console subject, and among the 800 resulting pages, this article is among the two (with 2009_in_video_gaming), that do not print correctly!
Sorry if I used a word incorrectly, but English is not my natural language (I am French). However, the first two Wiktionary definitions seem pretty close to what I meant:
  • "avoid" or "bypass", as this was the first thing I tried to do when I encountered the problem
  • "surround" our "besiege" is very close to "narrow down" as I really struggled against the bug, don't you think? Mstempin (talk) 20:38, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah I see, never noticed that function before. Anyway, I get the same error, so it's definitely a problem with the page (not some random bug that only happens to you). I'll look at the syntax of the page and see if I can get it working.
Don't worry about the incorrect word usage - I wasn't telling you off, just letting you know for future reference. Again, just so you know, "Surround" or "besiege" is in no way close to "narrow down" - by "narrow down" I mean you start with a long list of possible causes, and end up much shorter list (i.e. something in the first two lines of the the "Model comparison" table). Wiktionary:narrow down defines it as "Make more specific". which is pretty much what I mean. Now, what you said would make sense if changed to something like "I have been able to circumvent the problem by removing the first 2 lines of the "Model comparison" table". Circumvention is pretty much making it so the problem is irrelevant, but not actually fixing the problem (for example, deleting the table would circumvent it, but it wouldn't actually solve the problem of the table not rendering properly). By the way, other than that one word, your English seems fine to me.
Alphathon™ (talk) 21:00, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Looks like it's (c) table is too wide. I managed to get it to render by removing the double-column "features" section for the 20/60 GB models like so: User:Alphathon/PS3 table fix test page. Alphathon™ (talk) 21:28, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your efforts! Yes, your suggestion for my "circumvent" misuse makes more sense!
During my numerous tests, I found that removing the double-column solves the problem too, but I was looking more for a wiki syntax problem than for a pure width problem. As I am not a wiki syntax expert, I was pretty much stuck there.
Note that there is a similar problem in the second table from 2009_in_video_gaming.
Mstempin (talk) 21:59, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

As far as I can tell the only problem with the PS3 table is the width - when the boxes are put on separate rows it works fine but it only just fits. It also works fine if you remove one of the other columns but leave the multi-tier features section as-is, since that also reduces the width. I've had a look at 2009 in video gaming, but I can't seem to get it to work (although I fixed some issues). Alphathon™ (talk) 00:58, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

New Xmas bundle in Europe, as of November 5th

Just want to point out that, as of November 5th 2010, the PS3 (320gb version) has a bundle (with Gran Turismo 5) for sale in all of Europe.

Units sold figure

I just noticed that the Units sold figure in the sidebar is pretty random.

It currently says 200 million and links to this page: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html which adds up to nowhere near 200 million. Perhaps I'm missing something.

StuartGilbert (talk) 09:43, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

It was a seemingly arbitrary edit (possibly vandalism) by Xxjakesaysheyxx. He/she did the same to the Xbox 360 infobox (changing it to 196.9m from 44.6m). I've reverted it to the proper figure based on the ref. Alphathon™ (talk) 11:00, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

fail0verflow and Hacking

The article mentions the running of unsigned code on the PS3 using the hacking methods by fail0verflow. This is wrong. It should say signed code instead. As you may be aware, the private keys are now public and anybody can sign software and run it on the PS3, hence the term signed code. Games, updates, homebrew, you name it.

Homebrew Section Addition

On January 8th 2011, George Hotz aka Geohot (famed iPhone hacker) has released a dongle free "Jailbreak"[1]for the Playstation 3. With his "Jailbroken" firmware, it adds an option to install .pkg files, in return which is homebrew for the Playstation 3. A long with the Jailbreak, he has released a set of tools that will enable anyone to sign their own applications as if they were Sony. A repository set up to put all of the 3.55 signed applications has been put in place[2]

Canada-only 160GB Slim Bundle?

I am not sure exactly when this released or if it really is Canada exclusive, but there is a 160GB Slim bundle with Infamous and NHL 11 that came out sometime in November I believe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.250.116.240 (talk) 18:09, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

First, is it an official bundle (as in created by Sony, usually with custom packaging etc) or a store bundle (only the first is relevant)? Second, do you have a link to any info about it? Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 01:26, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
It is an official bundle, it all in a custom box from Sony. It seems to be Canada-only, only decent info on it with a picture is here. Can't find anything more official on it, sorry. Seems to be a holiday-only Canada-exclusive bundle, but it is definitely an official bundle, it was at all the major retail chains and it has its own packaging. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.250.116.240 (talk) 16:59, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
After a bit of googleing, I found an announcement of it on the Canadian PlayStation Blog - it doesn't get much more official than that. Thanks for the heads up. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 17:11, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Slim Model Power Consumption

In the first sentence under the Slim Model section heading it reads, "The redesigned, slimmer version of the PlayStation 3 (commonly referred to as the "PS3 Slim" and officially branded "PS3") is currently the only model in production. It features an upgradeable 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB or 320 GB hard drive and is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and consumes 34% (CECH-20xx) or 45% (CECH-21xx) less power than the previous model, or one third of the original PS3 model." 34-45% less power is not one third of the power use of the original PS3. It should read, "one third less than the original PS3," or, "two thirds of the original." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.110.52.137 (talk) 00:18, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

I think you've misread it. It's 34-45% less than the previous model (i.e. the newest 80GB/160GB fat models) and ⅓ of the original model (i.e. launch NTSC 20GB/60GB fat models). It could probably be worded better, but it is accurate. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 03:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
… at least I think that's what it means. My calculations suggest the CECH-20xx uses ≈21% less than the 80GB/160GB fat models (based on the data on the linked Engadget page). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 03:43, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Silver 160 GB PS3 Slim Edit request from 190.219.164.113, 19 January 2011

Edit semi-protected Where I live, here in Panama City, Panama, electronic stores sell silver slim PS3s bundled with either PES2011 or Gran Turismo 5. They only have these in the 160 GB version. Here are the links, there are other stores as well but i couldn't find them online.

Although the image in the first link shows the PS3 with GT5 Prologue, it in fact comes with Gran Turismo 5(I have no idea why).

Please add Silver to 160GB slim PS3 available colors.

Also Add "Gran Turismo 5 (Panama; Silver console)" and "Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (Panama; Silver console)" to Available bundles for Slim 160 Gb PS3. You may add the links as reference, idk how. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.219.164.113 (talk) 17:22, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

I think they want the bundles and/or the the silver 160GB slim adding to the table (that's all I can think of at least). I'm not sure if those pages are sufficiently good as sources though. I'll see if I can find something better on Joystiq, Kotaku, Gamasutra, PlayStation.Blog etc. While on the subject I think something might have to be done with the bundles in the table - the list is getting ridiculous and I'm not even sure of the notability of it. Proposition to place at the end of the Stereoscopic 3D paragraph :

However, it is possible to play some stereoscopic 3D games compatible with 2D TV sets, thanks to the classical anaglyphic (red-cyan) glasses or the newer TriOviz Inficolor 3D[3] [4] glasses and Image processing. 82.66.35.84 (talk) 04:05, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't know; anaglyph etc can be done on any system that displays in colour and as such may not be notable. Implementation of such tech is dependent on the devs and is in no way related to the output of the console (other than being in colour). They would of course be notable on the pages about those games, so could possibly be brought up there. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 04:22, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree with Alphathon--I don't see why this is specifically relevant to the PS3. Edit request for PS3 hardware sales, from 86.156.80.215

PS3 hardware sales are only 41.6 million not the 47+ million stated, http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/ps3-stats-over-41-million-consoles-sold-psn-revenue-up-70-perc/ --86.156.80.215 (talk) 15:17, 3 March 2011 (UTC), 03 March 2011

Not done - The source for the 47.9M number is Sony's own site. It stops at December 31, 2010. For the 41.6M number to be correct, there would have to be -(6.3)M units sold this last quarter. I'm not sure what caused the discrepancy, but I would go with Sony's numbers. (Edit 15:47, 3 March 2011 (UTC): Actually, it looks like joystiq is using older numbers not including Q3 of 2010 when 6.3 units were sold.) Spacexplosion[talk] 15:43, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Quote from the SCEI.co.jp source: "PlayStation®3 Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales". Please site who thinks the 47.9M number is shipped units. Joystiq may be citing an old quote from during FY2010 Q3. Spacexplosion[talk] 20:22, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
This was also brought up at the 7th gen article (see Talk:History of video game consoles (seventh generation)#PS3 sales). I think the discrepancy is caused by use of out-of-date figures in the Sony presentation, since the 41.6 figure is what the corporate site shows up to the end of Q2 ( → 30 Sept 2010). That's just a theory though and I don't have any evidence to back it up (it's entirely possible that the figure is just coincidentally the same). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 04:18, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Also Eurogamer reported that they had sold 41.6 million back in November - that data was also directly from Sony (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-24-ps3-can-sell-maybe-more-than-ps2). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 04:29, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Keys

Should the signing keys be included in the article?Smallman12q (talk) 03:18, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

No. They're not encyclopaedic. I believe it would fall under WP:NOTGUIDE. The key is meaningless to or could not be understood by the "everyday reader" audience that articles are written for. Chimpanzee+ Us | Ta | Co 11:58, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
This doesn't fall under NOTGUIDE. There should be a PlayStation 3 signing key controversy similar to the AACS encryption key controversy and Texas Instruments signing key controversy.Smallman12q (talk) 12:57, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what you (Smallman12q) meant, but I think Chimpanzee is meaning the keys themselves shouldn't be included. The fact that they have been revealed by Geohot (and even roughly how it was achieved, although not an actual method) is already in the article (under "homebrew"), and was when you posted initially. Alphathon™ (talk) 13:20, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
You're correct, Alpha. I have no objection to talking about the fact that they've been revealed and any notable homebrew activities that follow, but they keys themselves (what the "everyday reader" will just see as a strings of random letters and numbers) isn't encyclopaedic. Chimpanzee+ Us | Ta | Co 13:26, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
That's absurd. The "everyday reader" will find most of wikipedia's content to be just a bunch of crap that they don't care about. That doesn't mean we only include hot cutting edge celebrity gossip and nothing else. The keys themselves are highly relevant and couldn't be more encyclopedic in this context. -- Ned Scott 20:10, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

It already does say in the infobox (under "Backwards Compatibility") and in various places in the console configurations section. It is also listed on the PlayStation 3 hardware page. In a nut-shell though, all PS3s can Play PS1 games and 20 GB and 60 GB models can play PS2 Games (as well as some specific 80 GB models). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 02:10, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

i even have another question. what about memory cards? do ps2 and ps1 memory cards fit in ps3s or do ps2 and ps1 games go in ps3 memory cards? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.236.161.43 (talk) 07:20, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

PS3 doesn't use memory cards (some models have SD card readers etc, but those are for viewing photos from cameras and such). There is a memory card reader add-on, but it's only used to transfer saves to the PS3 (see PlayStation 3 Memory Card Adapter). Normally, PS1 & PS2 saves are simply stored on the hard drive. Also, try to remember this is not a forum for asking questions about the PS3 - it is a discussion page about the article itself (for example, "do changes need to be made?", "should we add this?", "this bit needs a re-write" etc, not "can the PS3 do this?" "when does this game come out?" etc). Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 17:33, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

well, look at the top sentence. i forgot about the hyphens and how talk pages r supposed to work on the second saying from me.

69.236.161.43 (talk) 04:58, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

I am curious about the backwards compatibility with the PS2. under the model chart it says, "All models include: Blu-ray/DVD/CD drive, HDMI 1.3a,[143] Bluetooth 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T) and PlayStation backward compatibility through software emulation.[74][75]" Yet from what I can tell only a few early models were capable of backward compatibility. http://us.playstation.com/support/compatiblestatus/index.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_backward_compatible_PlayStation_2_and_PlayStation_games (Rob mc 1 (talk) 01:41, 21 March 2011 (UTC))

I think you've just mis-read it - ALL models are backwards compatible with PlayStation software (which is what the bit under the table says), only some are compatible with PlayStation 2 software. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 01:54, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Denied. The key itself is not notable (unlike the fact that is has been found, which is), and probably violates WP:NOTHOWTO (hard to say though). Also, the legality of posting that here is questionable - I'm not even sure it should be here on the talk page. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 15:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Is that some DMCA crap? It sounds like you're saying it might be illegal to propagate information that has been made public. (I do agree the key isn't notable though) Spacexplosion[talk] 18:34, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Not specifically, but possibly. As I said, the legality of posting that here is questionable. IANAL, and as such would rather err on the side of caution, especially when copyright law is involved (which seems to be subject to some rather illogical, unbalanced and inconsistent rules). I'm not even sure what jurisdiction it would fall under, since Wikipedia is primarily hosted in the US, but also has servers in Europe (I know it at least has servers in the Netherlands) and probably elsewhere, and the original software (of which the key is part) likely originated in Japan. Apart from that, since it might be considered part of the PS3 OS, it's distribution might be illegal - if something is copyrighted and someone makes a copy, it is still illegal to copy the copy.
Basically, I don't know if it's illegal or not, but since it is at least questionable, possibly covers multiple jurisdictions and it isn't notable anyway, I would certainly not be surprised if it is at the very least against Wikipedia policy to post it.
Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 18:56, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Its a blatant Copyvio. Sony owns the copyright on it and they haven't released it for publication. - X201 (talk) 12:56, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
I asked about this on Copyright problems and it seems like a bit of a grey area as a random series of numbers may not be eligible for copyright protection. A part of of a piece of copyrighted software isn't necessarily protected either. But from the sounds of how Sony's legal action is going, the US Courts seem to think that publishing the keys violates the DMCA. This is all moot in terms of Wikipedia though as whether it's legal or not, the key isn't encyclopaedic. Chimpanzee+ Us | Ta | Co 13:17, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I'd agree that the numbers themselves are not copyrightable, but I think that the framework arrangement of them into several different sections is. - X201 (talk) 13:24, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Good thing you're not a member of the judicial system then, or everything would get censored like you just did to WP. Spacexplosion[talk] 18:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

The judicial-system is a broad term and would include requirements for copyright law and publishing of such information on a site that clearly has their own rules established. Your issue is not really about whether or not an WP editor would be good or bad belonging to the "judicial system" or with censoring "everything" as you put it, but rather more about you overlooking all current law and statutes in order for you to publish *anything* you want regardless of law. Word Logix (talk) 20:39, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

My issue is that there is no precedent set for a private key being subject to copyright, and it annoys me when people heavy-handedly censor because they're afraid of liability. Your comment is long-winded nonsense. Spacexplosion[talk] 18:56, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
WP:NPA. These later comments do not contribute to the debate about the article! I don't think the actual keys are notable or encyclopedic, as WP:NOTDIRECTORY or WP:NOTHOWTO. As to the copyright issue, I have no idea! However, I think the current page is correct. ARDawson (talk) 20:09, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

inadequate lead situation

As the one who tagged the lead (AFAIR), I noticed the almost-edit-war on the subject. I don't have time to look at your changes in detail, but thankfully you both provided edit summaries (and I comment only on them). I'm with Alphathon, the issue is not length (although that could be an issue if it's too long compared to the article, this was not what I tagged), but that the lead is meant to stand by itself as a mini-version of the article. The main issue (what initially prompted me to add a tag) was that the recent LG thing got too much weight; a case of recentism. In addition I noticed that the rest of the lead also didn't summarize, but provided quite a bit of detail that would overwhelm the casual reader, possibly distracting from the broad subjects of the article. So if the LG think has been removed or reduced, you can remove that part from the reason parameter of the tag, and once it is a lead like MOS likes it, you can remove the tag entirely. Since you have differing opinions, it is probably best to leave the tag until you have consensus. (of course I had time to write this, but not to read; SRY. had I read, I may have felt prompted to write even more) -- Nczempin (talk) 18:13, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

I certainly don't want an edit war, but felt that leaving the lead so sparse wasn't really acceptable. I had hoped that following the initial reversion that it would become a BOLD, revert, discuss situation, or that Oosh would come back and semi-revert (kinda like my second edit). The LG stuff certainly doesn't belong in the lead and Ooch's edit removed it as well, so I don't think there's any contention there. Where it does arise however is the rest of the changes Ooch made, which I feel do not say enough about the topic. Here is the lead following Ooch's edits (with citations etc removed by me for the talk page):
The PlayStation 3 (プレイステーション3 Pureisutēshon Surī, officially abbreviated as PS3) is a seventh generation video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, first released in Japan on November 11, 2006, and international markets shortly thereafter.
Certainly, this tells a reader some things (name, what it is, who made it and launch date), but does not say enough IMHO. Also, it is rather a long sentence, which seems needless (that's a minor gripe though).
What interests me most is that the release date was left in but everything else was removed. What makes it specifically more important?
The current version (after my partial-revert) also mentions its main competitors, that it is part of the PlayStation series and it succeeded the PS2, and a brief overview of its main features.
Things which were removed (which is what I take to be the "too detailed" bit) compared to the original version are: the LG paragraph, the various international release dates (too much specific detail that doesn't really add much to an overall understanding) and the discussion of the PSN (I don't feel a comparison with the PS2s online capabilities is really necessary for the lead).
Just to make comparisons easier, here's my version (again, citations etc removed):
The PlayStation 3 (プレイステーション3 Pureisutēshon Surī, officially abbreviated as PS3) is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles. It was first released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, with international markets following shortly thereafter.
Major features of the console include its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, its robust multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable, and its use of the Blu-ray Disc as its primary storage medium.
Incidentally, I'm not sure my version or the original version cover the topic in sufficient detail either. There certainly seems to be a lot discussed in the article that isn't even mentioned in the lead.
Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.ðɒn/ (talk) 19:24, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
well, the second version is better, hands down. I would keep the tag for now, because the lead still leaves out some major points from the article. I would be more specific, but unfortunately right now I have two things were WP:TIND actually does not apply (but it applies here). -- Nczempin (talk) 19:59, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Inaccurate description

In the last paragraph under the section Homebrew>Custom Firmware (CFW), it says credit card information has been stolen as a result of the PSN breach. I think Sony has stressed on several occassions that there is no evidence that credit card information has been stolen. 122.57.203.159 (talk) 11:51, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't think they ever said there was no evidence. Now they've confirmed exact numbers [5]. Spacexplosion[talk] 15:25, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
They most certainly have said there is no evidence (and still do - see, for example Complimentary Offering and "Welcome Back" Appreciation Programme under PlayStation Network Restoration Update). That link you posted is about a different (but related) Sony Online Entertainment (aka SOE, Sony's MMO arm) attack, not the PlayStation Network (PSN)/Qriocity attack/outage. While both are owned by Sony, they are not the same thing and are completely independent. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.θɒn/ (talk) 15:32, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I had read this source saying, "SOE [...] confirms that its user data was stolen as part of the original intrusion -- not a second attack." Apparently it's more ambiguous than I thought because I can't find anyone else saying that. I'd say "no evidence that they've been taken" at the same time that there is no way to tell is just CYA PR-speak, but that's just my opinion. Spacexplosion[talk] 18:31, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Bad journalism in my opinion. At the very top of the press release it states "hackers may have stolen" - X201 (talk) 18:49, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
@Spacexplosion: Again, SOE ≠ PSN/Qriocity/SCEI. As for being "CYA PR-speak", since there is no evidence (if there is, they would be breaking the law by saying so, so I'm going to assume they aren't telling bare-faced lies) it would be bad for them to not say there is no evidence (they would end up being inundated with questions about the data that they likely can't handle at the moment, and their stock would probably take even more of a hit than it has), and to say "it hasn't happened" would be just as bad, as it may be false. It's a kinda "damned if you do and damned if you don't" situation.
@X201/Spacexplosion: Yeah, the SOE attack may have resulted in credit/debit card data from 2007 (most of which is likely now useless as the cards would have expired) and direct debit info being compromised.[6] The journalism surrounding these attacks hasn't been great on the whole. Again though, SOE ≠ PSN/Qriocity/SCEI, and does not relate directly to it (both are owned by Sony, and there are SOE games on PS3, but other than that, they are separate).

Leap Year Bug

Really, is there any need for something as insiginificant as this? Plenty of other consumer items with the same RTC had the same problem, (for example the iPhone), none of their Wikipedia pages bother to list it. It just adds to the clutter of this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snakeskincowboy (talkcontribs) 12:19, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

If it were simply giving the wrong date I would agree, however it says "The error code displayed was typically 8001050F and affected users were unable to sign in, play games, use dynamic themes and view/sync trophies" - if it "breaks" the console then it's a serious bug.. It's possible that the section could be better written (more concise, more encyclopedic)Imgaril (talk) 12:33, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Audio output

All PlayStation 3 consoles can play DSD discs which are SACD's mastered on DVD discs. Many sites distributing these discs say that you can get the 2.8224MHz audio sample rate from the analog audio output on the MULTI AV port ONLY, and other outputs will downsample it. Maybe under audio specifications the 2.8224MHz sample rate should be mentioned, as well as adding 'only on AV MULTI out'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.19.171.168 (talk) 11:08, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Firstly this needs referencing. Secondly the "AV Multi Out" only has analogue outputs as far as I know - so it will not be in digital form..
Thirdly, according to HDMI#Audio.2Fvideo - it can support 1 bit SACD audio.? Is this true for PS3
Also I think the conversion will be from 1 bit 2.8224 MHz to multibit/lower freqency - that's not really "downsampling" - I think it's called transcoding .. slightly subjective topic.
Also the bit rate is a feature of SACD - it should be (and is) mentioned at Super Audio CD - there is already a link to that, so that base is covered.Imgaril (talk) 11:28, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Yellow light of death

Yellow light of death -Having removed the "How to fix the YLOD" content and other unencyclopedic material from the article diff I notice that there is little point for the article to exist - since everything is already in the main article at PlayStation_3#Yellow_light_of_death.

I would convert the page to a redirect, but first I should check if anyone feels there is more to say, and a separate article be kept etc. I'll wait a bit and if there are no objections, merge.Imgaril (talk) 21:23, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Some of the bits within "Repairs, replacements and refunds" may still be notable (but would have to be rewritten, as before being removed were certainly in violation of WP:NOTHOWTO). Other than that, I see no reason why it needs it's own article. It's not like there's much to say on it really, and TBH the only reason it has it's own article is probably as some sort of response to the Xbox 360 technical problems article. Alphathon /'æɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 21:39, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Sony is attempting to bury the Yellow Light of Death because they deny the fault exists. There are many articles and independent sources to suggest the problem is massive and worth its own page with accurate information about the fault. Editing to remove anything that Sony does not like does not reflect the subject accurately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.145.40.34 (talk) 10:01, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

The only report I currently have access to says that 50% of all PS3 failures are due to disc read errors. The report doesn't mention the YLOD http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/xbox360-ps3-wii-reliability-08-2009/ but it can be inferred that the maximum percentage of consoles failing from YLOD would be 6-22% (or even less) depending on what failure mode the error is categorised under. eg see the report page 9 - "power (unable to turn on or stay on)" is ~6%, I would assume this would included the YLOD error, it might be categorised in "other" which has ~16% of failures. The report appears to be dated late 2009.
It's possible the error is related to early models, or a particular model - if this can be ascertained reliably that would be worth adding.
We need verifyiable facts. If you can provide more reliable sources of information then that can be added. Given the data in the square trade report it looks like the entire topic has been skeweed by the watchdog report though.Imgaril (talk) 10:41, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

"OtherOS support" should be linked to properly, and the content in this article abstracted and most moved to the main page. Done diff - I've left a note on the OtherOS page.

Also PlayStation_3#Video_services contains too main short sections, and doesn't meet WP:MOS. It needs re-working. Done diff

If nobody else jumps at it I will do this later.Imgaril (talk) 02:21, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Also used the link given above (at top of page) in diff, so I removed it [7] - the link also mentions (looking forward) the possibility of Sony reducing cost by removing the backwards compatability functionality quote " One candidate for elimination in a future revision of the PS3, says iSuppli's Rassweiler, is a $27 Toshiba graphics chip designed to facilitate compatibility with older games from the PS2. "I've heard that Sony wants to put in some kind of software-emulator technology in the future, and so someday Sony could get rid of that chip." " - this eventually sort of happened - but I don't see how to integrate it into the article usefully.Imgaril (talk) 02:48, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Red Light Of Death as another topic for Reliability?

Recently, lots of blogs and forums have been talking about the Red Light of Death, which generally is described to be this problem: -PS3 suddenly turns off followed by a blinking red light... -The user isn't able to control the PS3's on and off function using the controller( you can only restart the ps3 by manually turning it off and then on again) The issue generally happens with the 1st and 2nd generation ps3s, but other cases have been mentioned. Also, the issue doesn't happen on a regular basis, and some reasons for it are said to be an overheating problem. I personally have had that problem and it only happens when playing certain games (For me it was Uncharted 2). I'm guessing the issue is usually with games that take up much of the PS3's processing power, however that's just from personal experience. Maybe we can find some reliable sources for the problem and some fixing options? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZombyPiggie (talkcontribs) 23:33, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

MEH, this doesn't seem to be as widespread, what 70 million units sold world wide and a few sparse reports on Hardware failure. Should Black-Ops really be Listed as the Best Selling Playstation 3 game?

This just rather makes me curious, since sales figures for the game have never been released. Gran Turismo 5, on the other hand, is the greatest selling game to have a sales figure (7.3 Million as of January 2012.), and would thus make more sense to list it since there's a sales figure to show how much it has sold. Black Ops, doesn't have a sales figure that shows it sold more than GT5's 7.3 million. What do you think?

~~Shadowmario64fan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shadowmario64fan (talkcontribs) 18:47, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Could be fanboys. Not sure. But according to this, GT5 has sold 7.3 million worldwide (source), while Black Ops has sold 3.269 million worldwide(USA sales source Japanese sales source). Ikkian|talk|contributions 06:05, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Effectively, the current reference for Black Ops is a press release from Activision saying "We've sold the most on PS3, but we're not telling you how many". Given that the source is an unsubstantiated claim, via a press release, without any data to back it up, I think that it should not be used. Put GT5 with its sales data reference back up. - X201 (talk) 10:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
I'd say the opposite to be honest. As far as I know, we don't have a source saying that GT5 is the "best selling game on PS3" - all we have is a sales figure which is higher than any other PS3 sales figure we know of. There may well be higher-selling games than both BlOps and GT5 which sales figures haven't been released for. It isn't Wikipedia's place to make an assertion on which is the "best selling game" unless we have accurate sales figures for every game. In the absence of that the best we can do is reference a claim made by a game's publisher (who no-doubt has access to more data than we do), stating categorically that their's is the "best selling" game. Chimpanzee Us | Ta | Co 11:45, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

hello its possible to add informations ? thanks http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Homebrews_PS2

translation: In mid-August 2007, Sephirothff, a French hacker, discovers the ability to run homebrew programs (programs not official, "homemade") via a special disc "Swap Magic" on the first generation of PS3 (60GB EU version, and 60Gb and 20Gb versions JAP and U.S.). Since the programs are the foundation created for the PlayStation 2, those they engage in a first via a USB without interactions, then some time later, a USB driver will use them more easily. Ifcaro, a Spanish hacker later propose a program to launch copies of PlayStation 2 games from an external hard drive. This technique will be the first to run homebrew on the PS3. I believe the sentence should read: "In October 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment and Netflix announced that Netflix would also be available on the PlayStation 3 in the United States; initially users had to use a free Blu-ray disc to access the streaming video." but since the page is semi-protected, i can't update it, could someone fix this error please.

CECH-4000 series

When is a good time to start including the CECH-4000 series PS3 in the article? Sony hasn't publicly announced it yet and few specs are known yet but the FCC has effectively made the information (at least the typenumber CECH-4001x and a drawing [8]) public so it's quite official. The Eight Cores & The Playstation 3 Slim

Hello! I'm curious to know if the original 'design' of the system intentionally being released with one core bricked is still common for the new Playstation 3 Slim? Or, have they been able to manufacture the processor more reliably now? If so, have they started to give allowance for a seventh game core (eighth being the operation system one), or is it still based on the 7 + 1 probable dud model? Thanks. - The Legacy (talk) 08:16, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

{{Request edit}}   Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made.

This update decreases the backspace capability of the PS3 browser in text windows to about one character per second. This makes editing Wikipedia a tedious affair (if you hold the backspace button too long, it eats everything in its path). So, could someone please vandalize this article by adding vile accusations toward key members of Sony and replacing all occurrences of "Playstation" with "Gaystation"? I'd do it myself, but I'm a respected member of this community. Make it look like an accident. InedibleHulk (talk) 07:10, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

A section for the new slim model?

The new PS3 slim model, smaller than the current slim model, with less consumption of energy and a smaller production technique (20 nm CPU?) will be launched this or next month. Should this be mentioned, or is it still in the roumor phase? link 88.91.93.121 (talk) 15:27, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

PS Vita Connectivity/Cross Platform play

The PS3-to-PS Vita functionality is not mentioned here, but is a pretty compelling new feature for both devices, and one Sony is pitching as an alternative to the WiiU's tablet controller. Sony have added special firmware updates to the PS3 to enable support the PS Vita, including allowing data transfer, sharing licensing between PS3 and PS Vita versions (download one format, get another for free). It also have remote play options similar to the PSP functionality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.109.169.137 (talk) 01:09, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Shouldn't the article be updated to reflect that PlayStation 3's current System software version has been updated to version 4.30 (Source)? Furthermore, the article states "In the UK, the 500 GB model was released on September 28, 2012, while the 12 GB model will be available from October 12, 2012". The "will be available from October 12, 2012" is outdated and should be updated as we have passed that date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.111.86.106 (talk) 13:50, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

PS3 Slim no longer in production?

[citation needed]. As far as I know we just all *pretend* Sony is replacing the Slim with the Super Slim. I want to know if i'll still be able to buy a "brand new" PS3 Slim from a store in 2013, heh. Le Déchaîné (talk) 02:18, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

The article talks about which models are still in production - the ones that factories are still producing. Obviously, retailers and distributors will still have Slims for some time but generally, once Sony start making a new model they stop manufacturing the previous one because it's very costly to keep two different manufacturing lines open at once. There isn't really any way of knowing when the supply of existing Slim models will run out. Chimpanzee Us | Ta | Co 11:30, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Ban on retail sales of the PlayStation 3 in China may be lifted

Currently the PS2, PS3, PSP and PSVita cannot be officially bought "retail" in China, however many people in China still own them and in most cases they are sold by resellers in the black market, with consoles coming in from North America, Europe and Hong Kong. The ban on domestic retail sales might be lifted after the PS3 has received official government certifications. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 17:48, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Ps3 Sales December 2012

Ps3 sales reach 77 million in December 2012

http://gamer.blorge.com/2013/01/11/idc-ps3-sales-surpass-xbox-360-worldwide-in-december-2012/ DannyCarter777 (talk) 08:52, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Source, Sales & Interpretations.

The article says that the sales pf the PS3 were 70.2 millions of units as September 30, 2012. This information came from two sites of the official web page of Sony Computer Entertainment.

The first one says that the sales of the PS3 from 2006 to 2011 were 63.9 millions of units: ("PlayStation®3 Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: million)". {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |editorial= ignored (help))

The second one says that the sales of Hardware in the year 2012 (until the second quarter of the year) were 6.3 millions of units: ("Computer Entertainment System Worldwide Hardware Unit Sales (Unit: Million)". {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |editorial= ignored (help))

The information on Wikipedia came from the two sources united. My problem is on the second source. It doesn't says that the sales are only for the PS3. It may seems obvious. However later in a new of Sony Computer Entertainment says that as November 4, 2012 the sales are 70 millions of units [9].

The fact that the second source is not only of PS3 may seems logic if we see the number of sales of the first and second quarter. They are quite high, don't they?

Finally I want to apologize if my English in not that good since it's my second language. --Andresisrael (talk) 16:24, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Within the "System unit" subsection within the "Console configurations" section, it says that various (hard drive) sizes up to 500 GB have been made available, but the sources cited for that claim ( http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/100706ae.html, http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/white-ps3-slim-out-in-japan-this-month) do not mention the 500 GB hard drive sizes; the largest sizes they mention are the 320 GB hard drives. I'm not questioning that 500 GB hard drive PS3s exist; I would just prefer that the part of the article that claims that the PS3 with the 500 GB hard drives have been made available actually cites one or more sources that actually support that claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.111.86.106 (talk) 10:15, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Linux Support

As for Linux Support, I believe even the newer Slim versions *do* support Linux by either Jailbreak or other means. Every single PS3 console does support Linux as long as you take the right software steps, as can be heard from PSGroove's 3-part video conference which is covered over 3 episodes on YouTube. Here's the first part where they claim this (Note, please do playback from 3:02): "PSGroove 2010 Console Hacking (Part 1)" on YouTube.

At 3:25, he points out the Linux support being possible on Slim. Please see the video's description for the other 2 parts if you are interested in more details. I hope this is relevant to the article :)

CPU unclearly labelled

While its labelled in Sony/ IBM's labels, its very unclear to anyone what it means . Isn't the clearer way to say it is

  • IBM PowerPC* combined with 3 high MFLOPS coprocessors.

(this means that for a single job, the MFLOPS could be 1/3rd max. But generally requirement for huge MFLOPS will be abl to be load balanced across 3 cores.) - — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.242.170.18 (talkcontribs) 01:51, 23 December 2012‎

The coprocessors must have an instruction set -what is that ?

PS3 suffers from lack of future proof

This is now evident as - PS4 will move to the ubiquitous 80x86 CPU family..

- Why 80x86 ? future proof. Able to leverage the cpu to gpu interfaces and the gpu's already being developed for 80x86, which will be a long lasting produt... they may make CPU and GPU upgrades a possibility... why doesnt the PS have a bus for plugging in modules , like a GPU card..

They are kicking themselves that they didnt make the PS family more like a PC in a console... Windows 8 for PS4 or PS5.. why not hey ? Microsoft cannot stop them . If they run 80x86 cpu, Jailbreakers WILL run Virtualisation .. (VmWare style layers..) and run Windows... - — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.242.170.18 (talkcontribs) 01:51, 23 December 2012‎

Playing PS2 Games

True, the latest PS3 models are not backwards compatible with PS2 games. However, it is demonstrated in some online videos that playing PS2 games can achieved by copying the content of a PS2 game, and by using some special software. I wonder if there's any truth in them. 173.55.37.52 (talk) 01:00, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

85 million sold

The article includes a link to Statista for it's source of 85 million units. https://www.statista.com/statistics/268966/total-number-of-game-consoles-sold-worldwide-by-console-type/

But I wonder if that is a reliable source. They don't show where they get their numbers from or how accurate. And investigating online I'm seeing mixed reception on accuracy. Anybody got any thoughts on that? 71.178.34.108 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:45, 23 July 2017 (UTC)

Announcement of the PS3 discontination

Well, I was tried to find out about the last shipment of the console in Japan and I didn't found it. Then, I searched in Google and other gaming websites and they supported their article, from the only one "Gematsu" or something like that website. On the other hand, Kotaku is support their article from the Inside Games.jp but they don't completely believe that. I believe that they are all nonsense. If I do wrong, please tell me. --JOHNNARAS, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

The announcement of upcoming PS3 discontinuation is already in the article. -- ferret (talk) 14:04, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

No, it isn't. If you are talking about the discontination only in New Zealand, I agree. BUT the discontination in JP is not real. But... look, try to translate their words from the Japanese PS3 website. They don't say like that. I was trying I don't see something like that. Maybe they doing this, because of the population (of the websites)!! I don't know... --JOHNNARAS, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Please, take a look: [11] --JOHNNARAS, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

I read it yesterday. The japanese site says the product will be discontinued "soon". It's important to note they do not say it is ALREADY discontinued, but the site definitely announces an upcoming discontinuation. -- ferret (talk) 14:26, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Where is it? How did you found it? Because I don't read like that, but advertisment words! If you believe that, then is OK. And the result of this is: we 'll find out. Sorry, but I think that many websites are trolling for views because they live from that. Good luck. --JOHNNARAS, 22 March 2017 (UTC).

It's on the page for the current model, here. Unfortunately even if they are ultimately wrong (For example, maybe Sony discontinues this one remaining model, but releases a new one), we have to report what the sources are saying, and this is very widespread reported by many reliable sources. -- ferret (talk) 14:48, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

"Scheduled completion coming soon" well, I find it! All, right I'm sorry about this. --JOHNNARAS, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/810752/PS3-Sony-ends-production-PlayStation-Plus-update It says that the shipments finished in other regions already in one part of the article but it doesn't clarify the whereabouts of the official statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.109.225.61 (talk) 18:45, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure if express.co.uk is a reliable source this is the first I've seen in an article mentioning shipments terminated around the globe (although does make sense considering no new models have been sold online or in retail stores since that time.) I recommend waiting until a more experienced editor takes a look at it. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 00:41, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Kotaku and CNET are both good sources and pretty much sums up that in October 2016 was when the PS3 was essentially discontinued in the US due to no new shipments being sent to the US. CNET states Japan was the last place that new PS3 units were being sold which would effectively end its lifespan. So this just leaves the Wii as the only one that is still left in production because Nintendo hasn't said anything about that console. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 07:17, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Um...

Heading into 2017 Japan was the last territory where new units were still being sold until May 29, 2017

What about the UK market? That doesn't even seem to be mentioned anywhere in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.108.150.197 (talk) 16:19, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
Sony terminated production of the PS3, Japan was just the last territory they were manufacturing and selling new units. The CNET article clearly stated that Japan was the last territory they were selling new units before they terminated production earlier this year. In another article from Kotaku Sony Japan already said shipments of new units to the US were terminated sometime in October 2016 and production of new units were already terminated and there wouldn't be another model replacing the "super slims". Sometimes companies don't disclose publicly every market they stop selling and/or manufacturing units of a product. We have two sources that clearly state that manufacturing and selling of new PS3 units is done as a whole. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 02:49, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

No, Kotaku's article clearly says "No word how this impacts North America or Australia. Kotaku followed up with Sony, but did not hear back in time for publication." And like this person mentioned, no word on Europe. Brayden96 (talk) 08:05, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

The Kotaku article was updated after publication with the following quote from Sony Japan:
"This article was originally published on March 17, 2017. It has since been updated.

"Currently shipping models"

The section Technical specifications currently states:

The system has Bluetooth 2.0 (with support for up to seven Bluetooth devices), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and HDMI 1.4 built in on all currently shipping models.

This ship has sailed. But the sentence seems accurate even without "on all currently shipping models"; perhaps it was written to account for future models instead of to differentiate from older models. So I removed the phrase. Not being completely sure, I'm noting this here for other editors. Digital Brains (talk) 09:58, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Last line in paragraph on supercomputing states "As built the Condor Cluster was the 33rd largest supercomputer in the world and would be used to analyze high definition satellite imagery." suggested changes are "As" to "Once" & add comma after word "built". Archivejoe2 (talk) 23:02, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. "As built" is different in meaning from "Once built". "As built" refers to a specific configuration at a point in time. "Once built" refers to a continuing time period. The comma is optional in this usage because the phrase is not clearly a parenthetical or a subordinate clause. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 18:36, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
