Greek life

Looking in the history of this page, there seems to be some contention regarding the greek life section given how many changes have been done and undone and redone. The university doesn't recognize fraternities/sororities (its in their policy) so I don't think its very relevant to the university's page. Technically the greek life still affects student life so I did leave the section in, but I converted the bullet points into a prose list so it doesn't take up as much of the page. UOIT doesn't have a very long article so the bullet points made the section seem too significant a part of UOIT, especially for something the university explictly states is not affiliated with it. I think any significant changes to the greek page should probably be discussed here on the talk page. --Bee Young King Yellow (talk) 21:37, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Frankly, this shouldn't be included, but whatever the case, the terms fraternity and sorority should be used, and not "Greek life", "Greek community", or "Greek organizations". These are colloquialisms that have no place here. If this section is kept, it should explicitly state that these clubs are not sanctioned by the university, in addition to not be recognized. Name Change

The university adopted new corporate branding in March of 2019 but did not change its official name. It can be compared to The University of Western Ontario (UWO) with it's branded name being Western University.

• University of Ontario Institute of Technology → Ontario Tech University
• UOIT Ridgebacks → Ontario Tech Ridgebacks

– While the official name remains unchanged, "Ontario Tech University" is now clearly the most commonly used name for this institution. This is consistent between the school's own website (ontariotechu.ca) and in independant news sources (e.g. Global, Canadian Press).   Not only is there precedent, it's Wikipedia policy. Please see this excerpt from WP:COMMONNAME: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources)". uOttawa is not the name most commonly used by reliable sources so it is not suitable for an article title. Western University is arguably the most common name but there are other schools with that name so the official name is used as natural disambiguation. BLAIXX 14:59, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

This doesn't seem to be the case with universities, perhaps there is a guideline somewhere that we should look up for these specifically. Take University of Missouri or University of Mississippi for example, who have articles at these titles, despite being referred to more often as Mizzou and Ole Miss. 162.208.168.92 (talk) 16:25, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

So just a comment, but WP:UNIGUIDE is a style guide that is largely formed (and supported) by the consensus of WP:UNI. Articles related to that project (including this) should be conforming to the consensus they've established (on top of the MoS and other Wiki related policies). With regards to UWO, on top of the need for natural disambiguation (multiple Westerns), it should be noted that the last move discussion that took place for that article was in 2012, soon after its was rebranded. Given that timing, there was a fair bit of opposition amongst editors that UWO remained the institution's common name at that time (and I'd make the guess that UWO remains the common name for certain demos now).

Also, with regards to Common name and University of Missouri/Mizzou, University of Missouri is by far the more common name just based off Google search results. Common name is a question of what is the more commonly used term in published sources (Wikipedia ideally being a reflection of WP:RS); the results of which can typically be found through found on News Archives, ngrams, and web searches. • Support per nom, in addition to the fact that Ontario Tech University appears to be the common name adopted by most publications (11.8k results on Google News for "Ontario Tech University", ~2.9k for "University of Ontario Institute of Technology" and ~2.1k for its abbreviation UOIT).
