Release from protection edit

Within an hour of this page being loosened from fully-protected, our friendly local vandal is back, changing Jon McCarthy's nationality. Same method of operation as before, brand new account, two words, no other meaningful contributions. Time obviously hasn't healed his/her gripe. - fchd 21:30, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

They are more than welcome to discuss their changes here.. I won't block them if they try that. I have no interest in football or soccer, whatever you would like to call it, and I am merely blocking them as they are disrupting the page without even bothering to realize that their claim is controversial. Please put requested changes here. Cowman109Talk 23:54, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
If someone would like to make a more complicated change to the article that can't be solved with a simple request, you could also create a subpage in your userspace copying the article, and I can history merge the changes here without much hassle. Thanks. Cowman109Talk 23:56, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nice try at protecting only the squad details, MZMcBride. You'll have to try something else though, because I can just remove the code for the template and reinstate the squad list from an earlier version, with Jon McCarty's nationality changed to English.Mane mane 21:02, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

And every time you create another sock account to change it, someone will correct it. You're wasting yours and everyone else's time. For footballing purposes, once he represented N Ireland, he is treated as N Irish. Live with it. - fchd 21:06, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

No I won't live with it. He only played for Northern Ireland because he wasn't good enough to play for England. That doesn't make him Northern Irish. It just means he wanted to play international football for whoever could and would accept him. By the way, I've saved the details of the squad list in case MZMcBride (or any other administrator) decides to delete the history of the NVFC article to stop me copying-and-pasting the squad list from old versions of the page.Mane mane 21:40, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your argument could be a lot more convincing if you'd stop blatantly breaking Wikipedia policy with your sockpuppet army and just stayed with one account and stopped to explain further instead of just using socks to get what you'd like. If you stop disrupting the page and instead talk here, I won't block you. You may very well have a valid argument, but you're not helping yourself this way. Dream on.Deer hay 17:09, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

MZMcBride: Your warning "Attention: Removal of this template will result in immediate blocking." isn't going to work. My sock-puppets are blocked on sight anyway for being abusive socks. If you put in an automated revert of removal of that template and automated block of any account that removed it that would work. But is that technically possible? Ha ha ha ha ha.Plain Zed 21:06, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The vandal is arguing that English should he his nationality because of where the player was born, but there is no such thing as English or Northern Irish nationality only British. So by his argument the flag should be a Union Flag, not a St. George's cross. Therefore the only thing that could be used is the national team he played for, if the flag is anything to do with sport.86.142.103.241 05:35, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Indeed. The only thing that makes this person notable is football, therefore it is his "football nationality" that is relevant - therefore Northern Ireland. It's just a shame that it's taking the time of several of us to counter the actions of a single misguided vandal. He/she knows it's going to be reverted every time, yet still changes it at the first opportunity. - fchd 06:09, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Doh. I really shouldn't have said "If you put in an automated revert of removal of that template" should I? I've been beaten by my own idea. I'll knock it on the head now.86.143.9.61 20:38, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Semi-protection edit

Semi-protection is pointless, the vandal will continue his behavior as he has obviously saved up accounts. S-P just means that anons can't revert and I for one am not prepared to have my home page attacked like others have been. J McC will be leaving soon anyway. 86.144.21.53 18:12, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

1976-77 edit

The season 1976-77 should warrant a special mention in the history of Vics being best FA Cup run in modern times. In November 1976 Vics beat Rochdale 2-1 in an FA Cup first round 2nd replay at Maine Rd after drawing 1-1 at Spotland and 0-0 at home, put Peterborough to the sword 4-0 in the 2nd round and beat Elton John's Watford 3-2 in a pulsating cup tie at the Drill Field in the third round with Frank Corrigan securing an interview on Match of The Day for scoring the winner. All hopes of a dream draw in the 4th round were foundered when Oldham Athletic at home came out of the hat. The match was moved to Maine road to get more fans in and 29,000 witnessed a brave battle from the Vics going down 3-1.

During the same season Northwich and Boston United were fighting it out for the Northern Premier League and Vics went to Scarborough on the last day of the season knowing a win won bring them the title. They drew 1-1 effectively handing the Lincolnshire side the title. A memorable season.

Squad changes edit

I've unprotected Template:Northwich Victoria Football Club squad for a bit so squad changes can be made more easily. Cowman109Talk 21:48, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I suggest that the template is now deleted and the details put back into the page itself. I believe it serves no purpose now because a) Simon Rusk and Jon McCarthy don't play for Northwich anymore and b) the bot didn't work properly anyway. I'm willing to make the edit to the page but want to check whether it should be done by an administrator (obviously I can't delete the template anyway, only blank it). 81.153.14.100 16:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Famous former players edit

Bruce Grobbelaar, goalkeeper for Liverpool Football Club during the 1980s and former national goalkeeper for Zimbabwe, made 1 appearance for Northwich Victoria during the late 1990s. Billy Meredith played for the club in the early 1890s.

Victoria Stadium is now Marston's Arena edit

{{editprotected}}

The club's official website [4] doesn't work at the moment but please see the Google cache of a relevant page on the club's website [5] and a government link showing the club's address [6]. The stadium has been renamed due to a sponsorship deal with Marston's (brewer and pub operator). Please will you rename the Victoria Stadium page as Marston's Arena and perhaps include the previous name in the article. Thanks. 90.200.149.127 (talk) 00:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Please add more links to confirm. feydey (talk) 13:23, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not done Please establish consensus for this change. Happymelon 15:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think it should still be mentioned, as on the club's website it only says "Marston's Arena" and does not mention "Victoria Stadium". Also the capacity is more than what it says in the article (or on the article about the stadium) however there is a mistake on the club's website as the seated and standing capacities add up to 10 less than the total. There is direct link to the page on the club's website, as it is in Flash not HTML, but it can be accessed by going to http://www.northwichvics.co.uk/ and clicking "fixtures" then "travel" and scrolling down. --Snigbrook (talk) 17:37, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Now that I have seen the relevant discussion, I think "Marston's Arena" should only be referred to as an alternative, sponsored name in the text, and the original name used in the infobox; as media coverage shows both names are used, and the stadium opened before being renamed. This would be consistent with other articles, although the one exception I can find, where the stadium's sponsored name is used despite the stadium having been in use for many years under its previous name, is a Featured Article (York City F.C.) and the article about the stadium (KitKat Crescent) is a Good Article. --Snigbrook (talk) 01:04, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Think protection will need to return... edit

...guess who's back? Mattythewhite (talk) 12:22, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

It seems amazing to me that someone has sat there for the last God-knows-how-many months, continually checking this page, just so they can apply their own misunderstanding of sporting nationality to one specific club's article. ArtVandelay13 (talk) 22:30, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • It's not just this page. Also Witton Albion F.C., VICS, Evolution and a few more as well attacking user pages of people who fix his mess which is why I have this account. He now also changes and reverts old dormant user pages. I imagine he has a clean account he uses to watch 'his' pages. Take a look at user:Tile join. He was once challenged about other players such as Owen Hargreaves and John Barnes but claimed to only intrested in Northwich Vics! I think he'll keep vandalising this page as long as Northwich have players born in England who have represented other countries at some level. NVFC (talk) 23:04, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Michael Welch (footballer) edit

His nationality on this page is being changed between English and Irish. He is a former Ireland youth international according to the Wikipedia article (although the article has category and stub for English footballers; and some sources (e.g. The Guardian) say he is Irish, but according to soccerbase.com he is English. Should both nationalities be mentioned or only one? --Snigbrook (talk) 16:10, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

There's only room for one flag in the infobox. In football terms, a player's primary nationality is the one he's represented at the highest level of intewrnational football. So he's Irish. ArtVandelay13 (talk) 16:14, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
The article Michael Welch (footballer) has a {{England-footy-defender-1980s-stub}} tag (the England category I referred to is only added as part of the stub). The tag that is closest to that for Irish footballers is {{Ireland-footy-bio-stub}}, which is less specific, and not as accurate (it is about football in Ireland, not about the nationality) but more consistent with the article.
Stub messages:
{{England-footy-defender-1980s-stub}}: This biographical article related to an English football defender born in the 1980s is a stub. You can help by expanding it.
{{Ireland-footy-bio-stub}}: This biographical article related to Republic of Ireland Association football is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.
Is there any suggestion for which of these should be used? --Snigbrook (talk) 16:53, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I've made the changes to my sandbox page mentioned in the "squad update", references are cited in the page. A reference to verify Jim Rushe as owner/chairman of the club (it needs the <ref> and </ref> tags adding):
    • Simpson, Andrew (2009-01-02). "Rushe receives ground offer". Knutsford Guardian. Newsquest Media Group. Retrieved 2009-01-14.
  • I am inclined to unprotect the page. Have dropped Kurt Shaped Box a line. Stifle (talk) 14:56, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm really sorry about that guys, I completely missed these edit requests. I'd have done them myself if I'd been aware of them. Anyhow, the protection level has been reduced to semi. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 15:32, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Home strip change edit

{{editsemiprotected}}

Northwich's home strip has changed. Please see their official website and look at recent match reports. Their website won't give a link.

It now has horizontal green and white stripes and predominantly green sleeves (with a white strip and black chevrons).

Please will someone change it. Thanks. 217.43.185.95 (talk) 18:04, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not done: Welcome and thanks for wnting to improve this article. The {{editsemiprotected}} template requires a 'Please change X to Y' level of detail. I looked and couldn't find an obvious place for this description. Also, a factual change like this should have a reference to a verifiable reliable source. In books we include page number; in a web site cite we need the path to the actual web page to allow one to verify the fact without too much effort. Thanks, Celestra (talk) 13:24, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The website doesn't have different URLs for each page as it uses Flash, not separate HTML pages (maybe the title of the page could be provided instead). I looked and couldn't find anything useful; everything was either too small and unclear, or didn't show it completely. snigbrook (talk) 13:58, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Request for page unprotection edit

The players who were born in England but played for another country have now left the club; the page can probably be unprotected now.

Request for additional citations template to be removed edit

I've added citations and references to most of the information on the page, can the notice at the top of the page now be removed?

1874 Northwich FC edit

A short section about the breakaway club, 1874 Northwich FC, has been added back to this article, based on the wording (and news sources) in the 1874 Northwich FC article. The article was raised at Articles for Deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1874 Northwich FC and the decision was to merge to Northwich Victoria F.C.

I was unsure where to add the addition. There was previously a mention in the 'History' section but, because the new club is not part of Northwich Victoria (though related via the supporters club) I've merged it further down the article, nearer to 'Rivalries'. Hope that makes sense to some people! Sionk (talk) 00:22, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Over-detailed edit

Can I make the heretical suggestion that this article contains immense and probably not-notable detail for a club which had only two Football League seasons, over 100 years ago? Yes it is one of the oldest football clubs still in existence, but that is (justifiably) stated early on. There are more notable English clubs with much scantier details, which might better repay some improvement work. Or is there just a large contingent of NVFC fans on Wikipedia? Protected edit

There is currently an edit war over the inclusion of a certain section in this article. Edit warring is strongly disapproved of here and can lead to blocks and other sanctions. Parties to disputes should use the dispute resolution process (in particular discussing the issue with the other party on the article talk page) rather than edit warring. I have protected the page for one week to force the participants to discuss the issue here. If the edit war continues then the protection will be extended further and participants may be blocked. Hut 8.5 16:14, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The issue has already been discussed in the edit summaries. You have protected the wrong version. 149.254.51.139 (talk) 22:43, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Again, we resolve disputes by discussing them on article talk pages, not by edit warring and including insults in edit summaries. Administrators do not decide what the "wrong" version of pages are (see WP:PREFER, m:The Wrong Version). Hut 8.5 23:12, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The only insults in the edit summaries are from Only1nvfc and you've protected his/her version of the page.149.254.51.139 (talk) 23:22, 17 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The edit summaries tell me there's a clear lack of consensus; that's why the issue needs to be discussed here.
Personally, I think the best path is some sort of compromise. We don't need the full volume of text, since the breakaway club has its own page. However, it is relevant to provide context about the financial issues that led to the split as well as the vote by the supporters to split. —C.Fred (talk) 00:34, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

As the IP editor I accept that the section was a bit long for the article about NVFC given that 1874 Northwich has its own article. I suggest the following as per C.Fred's suggestion. I do not believe that Only1nvfc will leave this in the article however.

1874 Northwich Football Club edit

A breakaway club, 1874 Northwich F.C., now play in the North West Counties League First Division. They were founded by the Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust following a vote by its membership on 15 November 2012 to break away from the club they supported and form a new community owned team in their town.[1][2] It emerged, on the day of the vote, that the owner of Northwich Victoria had been declared bankrupt and therefore failed the FA Fit and Proper Persons test.[3] Supporters chose the name 1874 Northwich for the club; [4] in order to avoid legal issues over the new club's name none of the proposed options presented to fans included the words Vics or Victoria.[5]

149.254.186.3 (talk) 22:40, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it needs to be a separate section; I think it should just be a paragraph at the end of the current section on the 2010s. I'd also focus on the break, something like this (I'm omitting the refs now for the sake of focusing on the prose):
On 15 November 2012, the owner of Northwich Victoria had been declared bankrupt and therefore failed the FA Fit and Proper Persons test. That same day, members of the Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted to break away from the club and form a new community-owned team. The new club, 1874 Northwich F.C., intentionally chose a name that omitted the words Vics or Victoria to avoid legal issues with the old club.
It provides a link to the new club's page, so readers wanting information on that club know where to go to find it. It also focuses on the split and how it relates to NVFC: the owner's bankruptcy, the breakaway vote, and the choice of name to avoid potential lawsuits for confusion with the old club. —C.Fred (talk) 00:52, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

There's no consensus here; it's 1:1. It's not a splinter club; it's taken well over half of the fans with it. 149.254.183.90 (talk) 22:43, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

When I say splinter club, I mean the club that broke away from the parent/prior club. The club has its own article, so all that should be covered here is the split as it's relevant to NVFC—unless you propose merging the 1874 NFC article back into this one, which I don't think you do.
Finally, bear in mind that historically, consensus at this article has been to not mention 1874 at all. If you disagree with my addition, we may need to remove it until we can get agreement on what/how to include 1874. —C.Fred (talk) 00:23, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't submit to stupid threats. 149.254.183.208 (talk) 13:29, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Do any other editors want to chime in here, or should I elevate this to the third opinion noticeboard?
@Hut 8.5: As the last admin to take action on this article, do you want to opine again before I refer this up? —C.Fred (talk) 14:00, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead. It doesn't look like this is going to be resolved without some more input from someone else. Hut 8.5 18:14, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
