How famous exactly is Newmarket, Suffolk? Should it not be renamed Newmarket, Suffolk with Newmarket as a disamibuation? Other places named Newmarket are important in their own ways. For example, Newmarket, Ontario has a population of approx. 80 000. Bryan5000 02:19, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

This is the Newmarket, after which all other Newmarkets are named. You may as well suggest that London be renamed London, England. -- Zsero (talk) 01:27, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Your first point is invalid. The Newmarket in Ontario linked to above was named independently of this one. In fact, the terms "new" and "market" are so common, and the concept of a "new market" sufficiently probable that many "Newmarket"s could have been named without this one existing. (See also the history of Newmarket, New Zealand, for example; however, your statement may be true in some cases, such as Newmarket, New Hampshire.) As to your second point, nobody is suggesting that a globally influential city like London be treated in the same way. Mindmatrix 22:18, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Which place had the name first is not a valid consideration on Wikipedia. Nobody's proposing that another Newmarket be given precedence over this one, but this one isn't sufficiently more important than any other one to earn precedence over a disambiguation page. Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the article, specifically Image:Frankie.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

Rowley (mile)

It is the nickname of a king, who founded the course, but I can't find any decent wikilinks to it. It COULD be Charles I or it coululd be II. Probably from my own severe ineptidude I can't find it on a Google search or anything. The Newmarket Racources site perhaps would be a good source (but of course we can't just nick it from there). It is longer than a mile as well. If not the racing post might be a good place to try I am just failing to find everything I search for tonight! You know how it is. Come to think of it I think it was well before Chas, one of the henrys. blimey sorry been doing a load of mathematics this evening/morning and can't remember any history now. Anyway hat is somwhere near--- I probably got the wrong king but the fact that it is the nickname for the king (whichever one he was) would be useful to enter into the article I think. I have this in a book somewhere but can't even remember which book it would be in (and not one of those silly books of things you didn't know etc but a real one).

Merger Proposal

I'm proposing that we merge whatever can be found notable at St. Felix CEVC Middle School with Newmarket. St Felix seems to have dubious notability and Newmarket could use an education section anyway, which I imagine I could knock together at the same time. This article needs editing. What does "has special birds and animals only suited to this terrain. It is also a very historical area with the remains of 6th century living" mean? "Special birds" - what are they? Four wings and three feet?

If it's notable at all (which I have some doubts about) then it would be better placed in the history section. The question you need to ask is if a plane crash somewhere near Newmarket in which nothing particularly significant happened and from which there weren't any significant repercussions is notable? A major crash, yes. Perhaps a smaller settlement, possibly - but in the context of Newmarket's history? If it had been in the town somewhere, perhaps more so. If there is significant coverage of it - and you'd look for the EADT and/or EDP articles at least - then it's possibly worth a line saying "In 19XX a US military FXX crashed in a field Y miles from Newmarket" in the history section. A queryable point in a reference

• The reference http://www.olivercromwell.org/newmarket.htm says "To judge by contemporary accounts it was not an impressive structure: according to Cosmo II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who visited Newmarket in 1669, ‘the King’s house, compared with other seats of the English nobility, does not deserve the name of a royal residence’."; but page Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (note spelling of his name) says that he died on 28 February 1621. I tidied up this section so it reads as prose rather than a list. The source references to the National Archives in the first paragraph of the History section seem a little incongruous, but I'm not sure how they should actually look. There is quite a bit of duplication within this wikipedia article, and a number of unsourced statements.
