Early Spanish ships off Oregon coast edit

I edited and added to the info about early Spanish exploration and Oregon. Specifically, I took out the claim, it is verified that Spanish ships did come to the area in the 16th and 17th centuries as the Oregon area was on the trade route between the Philippines and the Spanish settlements in North America. This is false. The trade route referenced is the Manila Galleon route, which normally reached North America in southern California. Also, the claim was footnoted and referenced to this webpage which does not back up the claim. The closest the webpage comes is saying, Spanish galleons plied Pacific waters until the 1800’s. Additional tales of beeswax and such don't convince me. The webpage is part of a site devoted to tourism, real estate, and the like, which does not inspire trust. Well, the stories of beeswax are true. Blocks of it have been dug from the beach at Manzanita as early as 1814 (by Native Americans who then took it over Neahkahnie Mountain to trade with Alexander Henry, a factor in the fur trade at Astoria), & some pieces are on exhibit at the Historical Society Museum in Tillamook. I'm studying a publication by the County Historical Society about the treasure, considering how to integrate its content into this article, which would add a number of further details. (The problem is that it is amateurishly written, almost as badly as the average website -- but the contents appear to be reliable.) -- llywrch (talk) 21:20, 27 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Heh, I had forgotten that I posted here before and expressed skepticism. I've learned a lot more about this recently and sure was wrong before. I added a short bit about it with a link to the beeswax wreck page, and good sources that go into the state of research on the topic as of 2018. The text on this page could probably be rewritten but I can't do it right now. Will try to get it it later. If that fails, the sources linked have tons of info about it. The sources regarding the plane survey speculation are problematic. The first source, maybe a book, is incompletely cited. The second is simply a website to upload papers--definitely unreliable. I will look for better sources for the subject.Hu Nhu (talk) 15:57, 28 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
