Merchant Prince and Machiavelli: The Prince are the same game. Per PC Gamer US ([1]), the game's name was changed after Holistic Design fell out with the original publisher, Quantum Quality Productions, and switched to MicroProse. Machiavelli was the title of the MicroProse re-release. Holistic Design itself said that Machiavelli was "initially released as Merchant Prince" ([2]). Circa 2000, Holistic's official site did not even have a separate listing for Merchant Prince, and simply considered it the same game as Machiavelli.
