Peer review for Science mickey18: Hi Science mickey18! I think you have a great beginning in developing a brand new article on Martha Austin Phelps. I think overall you do a nice job with keeping an "encyclopedic" tone and the outline is a nice guide for writing. It makes me think that I should add one in my sandbox. Your lead paragraph is concise and thorough. It makes me excited to read about her actual research once you write that part! If you know, I would specify if she first worked as a high school teacher or at a different level. Later in the article, it says Wilson College. Do you know if she always taught college? I have few nit-picky wording and editing suggestions for you that may help clarify your article: I would be careful with the phrase "one of the most accomplished female chemists within the first generation of women chemists in the United States." It is close to bias. Perhaps replacing "accomplished" with another word maybe like "skilled" or "prolific" could help. "...she taught as a science teacher in New York and Massachusetts." The phrase "taught as a science teacher" is a little repetitive. I suggest editing to "worked as" or simply "taught science." "In 1904, she also married Issac King Phelps, who was working as a chemistry instructor at Yale and George Washington University at the time." I would take out "also." It makes the sentence a little awkward. It is sort of a toss-up on how this should be approached, but I would consider referring to Martha Austin Phelps by her last name throughout the article.

Also, I notice that on many Wikipedia pages about people their dates of birth and death are included after their name in the lead paragraph. Have you considered adding that to your article? Great job at citing and avoiding bias! Acms116 (talk) 18:58, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Martha Austin Phelps Peer Review edit

Hello! I really enjoyed reading the article you created about Phelps. She sounds like a fascinating woman. There are a few typos here and there that I would make sure to fix before publishing it. I was curious if she got her PhD in just chemistry or if it was in a particular subdiscipline. Though I'm not sure how much of that there was back around the turn of the 19th century. For the papers that were published with Gooch, is it clear which aspects of the article/research were hers and which were his? I think you provided a fair and balanced viewpoint and that all of the sources you chose were unbiased and relevant. I would have liked more details about her paper for which she is "primarily recognized" since it felt like that was supposed to be important but I almost skipped over it because of how short it was. Also, it would be great if you could add some relevant pictures. I think those always help keep people engaged. Overall, you did awesome! NoetherIsLikeNoOther (talk) 22:17, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
