Top Gear

edit

I dont know how to do put it in the main article but if anyone wants to add it this is the official BBC Top Gear video of them driving across the salt flats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OETj9aTYO2Q

What is it?

edit

On the Top Gear episode referenced in the article, the presenters speculate on the composition of the material below the salty crust. Jeremy Clarkson suggests that it is "prehistoric rotted fish". It looks like very wet clay. Does anybody have any idea of what that stuff actually is? JDS2005 (talk) 14:03, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is this true?

edit

I don't remember any reference to this being the first crossing of the pan on the episode And even if there was a reference, Theres no evidence. Top Gear has lied about its feats before. No offense intended to the fans, I like the show myself, I just don't know if this is true —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.19.122.151 (talk) 19:57, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I remember the episode (and as the article states), it was the first crossing by automobile. I have no idea whether or not that's true, though. JDS2005 (talk) 23:32, 30 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well on the show the vice-president of Botswana said he thought it was the first crossing by car. It does sound feasible though, only a handfull of people ever go that far into it, let alone bother crossing it. 87.246.64.2 (talk) 18:24, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Split proposed

edit

The National Park should be split from the Pans article. There is clearly a connection, but the Pans should really be a large article on the ecology, hydrology etc, whereas the Parks article should talk about position within the National Parks of Botswana, visitation, visitor facilities, access etc. Let s see what others think. This step would be more in keeping with the way wikipedia handles other large natural areas. See for example: Great Smoky Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Research

edit

There appearstobeincomplete scientific research on the Pan. The article is certian of a lake, that dried-up "tens of thousands of years ago". How are geologists unable to give more specific number of tens of thousands of years ago? When those same geologists can tell us that The Last Ice Age (or last interglacial period of the Quartenary Ice Age) ended/began 11,000 years ago. When anthropologists can say that apes evolved into Hominids c200,000 years ago. Tell me that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wheelchairwesley (talkcontribs) 10:57, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Wheelchairwesley: The geologic processes behind the formation of the basin are not well understood. If they aren't, geologists have a hard time providing reliable dates. Kleuske (talk) 11:01, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
