Location of the lighthouse

This article contains the false claim that the lighthouse would be built on "the highest point on the island". I believe this claim might originate from the book Suomen majakat by Seppo Laurell (ISBN 978-952-5180-21-3) that also contains it, or possibly one of the sources used for that book. However, everyone who visits the island can see for themselves that the lighthouse indeed is not built on the highest point of the island, but a bit to the west of that point, where the land is lower (this can actually also be seen in the picture in this article, but since you don't see the horizon it may be hard to see for someone who has never visited the place). I believe that this false claim probably originates from the assumption that someone building a lighthouse on this low a rock probably would choose the highest point. However, in reality, the builders probably chose the spot that simply was "the best to build on", but we cannot know for sure. A book about Märket (Märket: Havsfyr och gränsland) by Jan Andersson was recently published, and although it does not say anything about why this exact spot was chosen to build on, there is both a mention that there was some kind of survey made by the authorities before the lighthouse was built, and that it was probably believed at that time that the whole island belonged to Finland/Russia because of a map error. This would go well with the assumption that the builders simply chose the "best" spot, and not the highest, if they believed that the whole island belonged to Finland. However, since we really cannot know exactly what went on inside the builders' heads, we should remove the false claim that the lighthouse would be built on the highest spot of the island. On an island that is around 3 meters high, the difference between 2,5 meters and 3 meters leads to a quite big percentual error. Status of Märket

This is somewhat confusing:

Market Reef, as it is called in English among three million radio amateurs around the world, is a "separate country" for them since it is the only Finnish territory with another country's territory in between (Åland being considered a 'country' in this context by radio amateurs).

Märket belongs to the municipality of Eckerö and thus the Åland region/province. --Vuo (talk) 21:15, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

The current phrasing "Market Reef ... is a separate country" is still misleading. Radio amateurs may count it as a separate entity, but that does not make it a country. It is part of the two countries Finland and Sweden. I'll rephrase it again. --Jmk (talk) 20:10, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

As I write this, the phrasing is "Radio amateurs around the world consider the Finnish part of Märket Reef (as they call it) a separate entity, distinct from Finland and Sweden."
