Pending Cases

WHY is Howard Hull still listed as other? His family provided his social security record as proof and his baptismal record as proof. That is two out of the needed three documents. It is not up to wiki editors to decide whether a candidate has the required documents to be added to the pending list. At present the pending list in this article is taken directly from the GRG pending list. To add a case without a proper citation would be OR. I heard that Howard Hall joined the National Guard in June of 1918. This is before the end of WW1 that occurred on November 11, 1918. Even though he never left the United States would he be considered a WW1 veteran? He was active during the war but never went overseas to fight in the war.If a waitress at an air base in England serving coffee is considered a veteran of WW1 . Would a National guardsman in the United States be given the same consideration? To unknown person I interviewed his relatives and they produced a uniform of the WW1 time frame and said it was his. As for Howard Hall being verifiable. Many blacks being born during that time frame were born at home so a birth certificate issued from a hospital did not happen. So like many cases it is harder to prove an exact date of birth for black people do to them being born without doctors involved. When social security went into effect in the 1930's the government accepted birth dates written in the family bible as an official birth certificate for benefits . They continued this practice until the December 31, 1999. Now 99% of live births occur at hospitals and a birth certificate is required. Until he is included in a list by a reputable gerontological organisation such as the GRG he will only be included in the Other list, provided there is a citation that claims he is a supercentenarian and is still alive. At the moment there is no such citation, the one provided goes to a page which does not mention him. Unless someone can find a proper citation he should be removed. This is the best source that I have found [2]. it tells that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman Marilu Cabrera says Bashou was born in 1900 in Iraq and will be the second-oldest person on record to be naturalized. Is es:María Juana Martínez from Argentina still alive? There was a source [5] that was posted when she turned 114 years old and she was also list of oldest living people by nation until she was removed. Why if she is still alive? Also it:Marianna Ostrowska from Poland IS still alive according to italian wikipedia and she is over 115 years old. Hasn´t their ages been verified? In general, when claimants exceed 113 and have not been verified, they are moved to the longevity claims page where both of the above claimants can be found. That page lists living claimants whose claims have not been verified, up to the age of 130, verified alive within the past two years. Those who claim greater ages move to the longevity myths page. It is really a waste of time to keep asking whether old cases can be updated. There are a number of editors who belong to groups which keep an eye on such things. If there is something available which cannot be found from a simple Google search they are likely to find it. Once there is a report of him actually celebrating his 110th birthday from a news source or other reliable source, he can be added. So, for example, he can't be added on the stroke of midnight on his birthday until a report is published. Otherwise, the claim has not been confirmed and it constitutes original research. It's not a reliable source of course but he does seem to be alive if you search his name at peoplesmart, which is usually pretty good at updating when someone dies. So it's worth keeping an eye out for a better source. Canadian Paul 23:06, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

The APRC is likely currently very little active, it's his project without much funding since he lost his fortune in speculations. No personel. Alexander Imich

Alexander Imich is now listed as a supercentarian with a birth date of 4 Feb 1903. He is also A polish veteran of WW1. Their are four men listed as unverified WW1 Veterans who died between 2010-2012. I believe we should show this man the same consideration and re-create the list with him on it. At age 15 it is highly probable that he fought the Russians during WW1 as he claims defending Poland from the invader. Actually:

1. The citation suggesting he has celebrated his 110th birthday is not very convincing, it is really a case of "Alexander Imich would be 110 now so let's wish him happy birthday because we haven't heard that he's died". So he is fortunate to even be included in the Other Reports list at this time.
2. The consensus after MANY discussions is that he should not be considered a WWI veteran.
3. "Highly probable" is not a good enough argument for inclusion in any article.
4. What may or may not have happened in WWII is irrelevant to any argument about participation or not in WWI.
5. Discussion of whether he should be considered a WWI veteran has nothing to do with this article.

They were not absolutely proven but highly probable and at their advanced age what benefit would they receive by lying? None that would matter . Many Polish veterans have no absolutely proven records because the city's that kept records were destroyed in both WW1 and WW2. I believe he is just as valid as the four previously mentioned and must be included just like they were or the four must be removed from any mention to be fair to all.

If not the list is hypocritical and Alexander Imich is being discriminated against for some reason

With the official end of WW1 not until June 28,1919. He easily could of been fighting for Poland because on the date of the official end of the war he would have been 16 years and 4 months old. Somewhere in one of the articles it says that there's never been a verified man of age 116 and it's unlikely there will be one. (I'm not sure why such a truly dumb thing was let stand, maybe because most everybody has become terrified by the article tyrants that rule here). I think that is what is being referred to. Vi Robbins update

The latest citation http://newslocal.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/viewer.aspx for Vi Robbins does NOT take the reader to the article the source is taken from. To find the actual article requires the reader to manually search for it (the title is "Little Nan still loves to help out others"), making the supplied citation useless. No I tried, someone with aspx knowledge may know how to do it but I don't. The problem is the citation is not valid if it does not link to a relevant source. The purpose of a citation is to allow the reader to check that the information in the article accurately reflects the source. This citation does not do that. Robert Young stated on the GRG page here that Benando Lapallo is at least ten years younger than he claims he is. Lapallo has claimed a birth year from 1901 to 1910, has gone by the name Bernando, fails to provide early life details to help verify his claim and he's promoting longevity products. That is a different issue. The upper limit for unverified claims in this article is 113, as agreed by consensus. As Kowalski has passed his claimed 113th birthday he no longer meets the criteria for inclusion in this article. Greater precision for place of residence

I think it would be interesting to specify the place of residence further than national level. Some parts of Japan may be producing more supercentenarians than others. Anyway, the correspondent for Poland found a record that shows he had a sister born in June 1900, making February 1900 impossible. His Wikipedia entry does not state that his given date of birth (2 February 1900) is subject to any doubt. He is also included on Wikipedia's page of last surviving veterans of wars.

I attempted to note that this is a "claimed" age, and was shot down by what seemed to be a coordinated attack. Edit war over sortable table

We have a couple of people (possibly more) using random ISPs to continually revert the sortable table on this and other longevity articles. This is getting extremely tiresome! Personally I don't see the point in sorting the table, for one thing if you try and sort more than once it will be incorrect because of ties. However if enough users agree that it's useful could they indicate so here. Once there is consensus, either way, I intend to have the relevant pages semi-protected to stop the reverts. For these tables, they are meant to be in one order. They were created to be in the order of age, which they already are. The rank, birth date, and age are already sorted. The only valid explanation I can see for having the table being 'sortable' is to sort the place of residence. But once again, seeing that these tables were created to be in one single order, I'd say not to have them sortable they don't need to be sortable. Having it sortable also allows for the tables to be sortable by gender (though with only two males in the living verified list at present, this really isn't all that useful). I definitely support having the tables on all of the various deceased lists, such as the List of supercentenarians who died in 2004, be sortable. It is an excellent source for confirmation of latest birthdays of French supercentenarians that are unreported elsewhere. It has been rejected as being a reliable source before, but it has just been used as confirmation that French supercentenarian Chane Koane reached her most recent birthday, so we should decide whether to use it or not as confirmation for French supercentenarians whose birthdays are otherwise unreported. Bernando Lapallo

I'm removing CrazyCoyote100's edit of adding Bernando Lapallo. Robert Young and the GRG have already investigated him and he isn't 112. See here and CTRL-F "Bernando". Other searches for him give his age at 105 maximum. Ancestry.com says he was born in 1910 as does a search here. However, this says he was born in 1909. While the 1930 and 1940 census suggest 1908. Um, no she isn't. This census match is one of the problems this case has. She's claiming 1898, the 1910 census suggests 1899 but she can't be found in the 1900 census. So was she born in 1898, 1899 or 1900? Social Security isn't 100% either, Salustiano Sanchez was verified with a 1901 birth date but SS said he was born in 1902. Yes, I noticed that a few days ago too. I think it is an internal tech problem at GRG, because the list was updated in mid-January but has now reverted. Joint 'World's Oldest Men'?

Following the death of Arturo Licata, and prior to the possible verification of Wash Wesley's claim, do we not technically have joint oldest living men? Because when Sakari Momoi was born on 5 February 1903 in Japan, it may have still been 4 February in Poland. So unless there are times given on one or both of the birth certificates, we don't know whether he or Alexander Imich was born first. Location and time variance

Table E is listing the oldest verified male as #66 among all supercentenarians, being born on February 4, 1903; and the second oldest verified male is listed as being #67 born on February 5, 1903. The birthplace for #66 is listed as the former Russian Empire, which used the Old Style (Julian) calendar system up until 1918 after the Bolshevik revolution, so that February 4, 1903 in the Russian Empire corresponds to February 17, 1903 in the Gregorian calendar system being used in most of the rest of the world (including Japan, which is given as the birthplace of #67). Thus the birth sequence of #66 and #67 in real time may be different than the ordering by calendar date on the birth certificate. Another minor uncertainty in birth order arises from the multiple time zone separation of the European area of the Russian Empire from Japan, so that some of early February 5 in Japan precedes some of late February 4 in eastern Europe. How GRG lists dates and ages is nothing to do with Wikipedia, we only use the data as per the source, and besides this subject has been discussed many times before with the consensus that as the time of birth is unknown taking the time zone into account is irrelevant/unfeasible. Dr Imich was born January 22 according to his original birth record. So it has already been adapted to the Gregorian calendar system. Re Other cases and Longevity claims

There is a proposal on Talk:Longevity claims to change the cutoff for unverified cases from 113 to 115 (or vice versa?). However, this page is unchanged, so unverified claims for ages 113 and 114 are absent from both pages. Is there a new page in between? The change was from 113 to 115 and therefore the 113 and 114 cases were removed (by me). I don't think there is anywhere they should be, as with other fanfluff of this nature I would expect one or more users will create appropriate user page(s) like this, or something like this. I have to agree. I wondered when I saw this what the idea here was to remove those claims - until I saw how many 115+ claims alone there are out there. Once we have lists that are well over a hundred, then we need to revisit the criteria. Even into the 90s, the number of people living past 110 was counted in the dozens. That is no longer the case. An indication as to how common it is now to have people this old, take a look at the history of the oldest people. Delina Filkins held the record for oldest person ever for decades. Born in 1815 and died in 1928, she lived 113 years, 214 days. Her record was only surpassed in 1980 by Fannie Thomas, born 1867, who lived to 113 years, 283 days. So it took 67 years into the 19th century before someone was born who lived 113 years, 215+ days. Look at the current list. Opal Thompson, born 13 DAYS into the 20th century, has already surpassed Filkins' age. And if she doesn't live two months more to be as old as Thomas - the all-time record holder as of 1981 - there are already 5 more confirmed 113-year-olds living, one of whom likely will. Think of it - it took only two weeks into the 20th century to produce someone who would pass the all-time oldest person record which stood until 1980. And soon we will have someone - perhaps Thompson - surpass Thomas' record as of 1981 - reach an age not matched until Matthew Beard in 1985! Canada Jack (talk) 20:52, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Please note that Emma Morano's name should not be reported as "Morano-Martinuzzi" because it is not a double-barrelled name. She was just Emma Morano and was known as such until she married mr Martinuzzi. Following Italy's naming customs, they added the husband's surname after her surname (naming custom: Name Originalsurname Husbandssurname). But it's not a double-barrelled name case. That's why she is reported in Italian media as "Emma Morano Martinuzzi" or just "Emma Morano". Alternatives in Italy are "Emma Morano coniugata Martinuzzi" (coniugata means "married to"), "Emma Morano in Martinuzzi", and may sometimes be mentioned as "Emma Martinuzzi". No hypen in any case. Explain this

Did you bother to scroll down the page, Georgia guy, before changing all the name of the page to "111"?! There are something like 100 people on the list who are 110! Putting aside the basic requirement for a page with numerous editors and frequent updates to gain a consensus before such a fundamental change, the GRG may not currently list any verified people under 111, they most certainly list numerous people 110 who are not verified but are pending, let alone the stack of other unverified cases. Are we going to chop off everyone under 111 on those lists too?

Georgia, take a look at the page and the title. "Verified" cases aren't what the page lists, it is only ONE of the lists. We list living people 110+ under three lists: the first is verified - none at the moment under 111; the second is partially verified - with a number of 110-year-olds; the third is unverified, dozens of people who are 110. So please revert your changes, or someone else will do it for you. As Derby pointed out, GRG currently does not have any verified 110-year-olds on their list, if and when one is verified, there will be 110-year-olds on the "verified" list notwithstanding the 100 or so already on the page.

I strongly disagree with the moving of this page. As CanadaJack says it is now inappropriately named, there are many 110 year old in the pening and unverified sections. That this was done without any proper discussion let alone consensus seems to me to violate multiple wiki guidelines. That there are no current verified 110-year-olds is nothing to do with wiki editors, there is no "you'll have to add the 110-year-olds". Why"? There are none to add (at the moment). All the 111 years olds are by definition supercentenarians, just because there is currently no-one on the verified list under 110 does not make that description (and article titel) inaccurate. WP:BLPN notice

I started a discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Unverified_supercentenarians regarding two issues: is GRC the only basis we consider a RS for listing here? I think that's contrary to the general policy of using reliable sources but one could argue that any other claim falls under WP:FRINGE so I don't know. However that leaves the articles that GRC has not verified: should they be listed even though there are no reliable sources that support it? Should they kept if there are other reliable sources for it which means that GRC isn't the only basis for the claims? Or we could have GRC along with ones that have other reliable sources but ones that are unverified by GRC and have no other sources should be removed. Country in tables

User:Kachelus keeps removing the country from one individual the table Verified living supercentenarian, (Eudoxie Baboul), whose article describes her as French and the verified oldest living French person. User:Kachelus is also behaving inappropriately by removing France without comment and marking the edit as minor. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? Ok, my fault. I forgot to explain, sorry. Why should be mentioned France after French Guiana, but not United States after US Virgin Islands and France after Mayotte (look at the pending and not verified cases)? I cannot understand. French Guiana is an overseas region of France, but is still considered a proper region of the country, even though it is not in Metropolitan France. It does therefore make sense to write "French Guiana, France". The same goes for Mayotte. Country flags in table

I added the flags and was reverted. I don't understand how this violates WP:MOSFLAG, it actually looks to me like classic usage. —Ynhockey ^(Talk) 18:14, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

WP:MOSFLAG states that flags should only be used if the subject is representing their country (such as athletes in the Olympics). Otherwise, nationality should not be emphasised. In the case of supercentenarians, while their nationality is of interest, it's not the most important thing about them and they are not representing their country, so flags shouldn't be used. -- Ollie231213 (talk) 21:47, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Actually, for lists/tables, it says: "In lists or tables, flag icons may be relevant when such representation of different subjects is pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself.". Someone decided that specifying each person's country in this list is important, which by definition means that it's "pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself". If it's not pertinent, the entire country column should be removed from the table. Personally I don't see what's wrong with it. —Ynhockey ^(Talk) 17:26, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
