Sections and order
editShould this be organized in order upriver? In sections like the crossings page?:
- Lower Mainland (Strait of Georgia to Hope)
- Fraser Canyon (Hope to Williams Lake)
- Soda Creek to Greater Prince George
- Robson Valley (McGregor to Yellowhead Pass)
Some other way? Pfly (talk) 23:07, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I've puzzled on teh northern limit of the Fraser Canyon, it's maybe something I should take up with the provincial geographers....the river's already in canyon by Quesnel and Hixon...the two little canyons at Prince George (Fort George and Cottonwood) are really just high dirt banks by comparison; I think Soda Creek has to be considered part of the main canyon; it's all gonne come down to one-line mentions in works like Swannell's surveying diaries or just in references that mention teh Fraser Canyon....it's very much a canyon at Alexandria, north from it too past Quesnel....I'd say Prince George to Hope, it's pretty hard to separate that part out; Hope's the right transition point for the Lower Mainland, of course, though below there it's mostly going to be bars (there are a few exceptions, mostly transformer stones, if any on the river at all). The Grand Canyon, so-called, is really just a very short double-u bend between rocks in an otherwise long stretch of meander; but it was fatal and difficult to transit by raft...don't think steam was involved on the Upper Fraser past Giscome Portage.....maybe though, but if so User:CindyBo would probably have already covered that in Steamboats of the Upper Fraser River.Skookum1 (talk) 23:18, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Features above PG are mostly likely named eddies and some rapids, features below Hope will be few; I'm not sure there's a need for sections at all....Skookum1 (talk) 23:21, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- BTW descending-from-source order is normal/conventional on river oriented articles; the crossings list departs from that norm.Skookum1 (talk) 23:23, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Just to note some of the bar-names and the like can just be redirected to this page, as they're not likely to withstand WP:Notability unless there's a good story attached to them (as at Horsebeef Bar).....though LOL a Category:Bars of British Columbia to encompass those redirects is gonna get misconstrued huh? Yankee Flat, Texas Flat, Texas Bar and others I will yet add are all, as you can, named the same as places in the US, so Iv'e disam biguated them; Boston Bar=Yankee Flat, naturally if you think about it; it's the site of North Bend, which was the original location of the placename Boston Bar; the bar would have been waht's on teh river, Yankee Flat was the benchland where the town is (if you drive up the Canyon, check it out, though most old buildings are gone....) Skookum1 (talk) 23:27, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thee's a whole slew of towns and localities in the Fraser Canyon, too; mostly it's just IRs that currently, if at all, ahve articles (more like the band governments do). List of populated places in the Fraser Canyon I might get a start at, finally, too; though some are only "formerly populated"....Skookum1 (talk) 23:28, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Table-izing
editBefore I get at adding coords and more comments, would you (pfly) pls mind tableizing it for me?....I need a break, and have other projects on the boil, including that steamboat stuff and my Lillooet project. There's more names in Kennedy's paper, too, I wasn't cross-referencing that on the recent editions, only by searching "[x]% bar" on BCGNIS....which didn't turn up everything, I'd search "u% bar" and the Union Bar IRs should have come up and they didn't. There's also names that appear on Basemap which don't appear in BCGNIS.....it's possible CGNDB has things BCGNIS doesn't, but I doubt it....Skookum1 (talk) 00:57, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
- Planning to--when there's a bit of time. I made a list of features today--mostly bars--with the relevant BCGNIS links. Seems like you've added most or all of them, but when I get the chance I can table-ize, add coords, etc. I made the list by just following the river in the topo maps in ACME Mapper and BCGNISing any named features. There were many many rapids and bars, or "reefs", shown without names. I was suspect there would be more on Basemap. There's also some very "large" features that I'm sure are in scope or not, like the Rocky Mountain Trench. Anyway, might get a chance over the weekend. Pfly (talk) 09:29, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
- I can do the coords easy enough after it's tableized, and any citations - NB I don't use templates any more for citingt BCGNIS, just URL-links, can't be bothered with code-heavy templates; if there's a lot on the page it could make it unwieldy etc....and the reason avoided "Landform" was so that we wouldnt' have to address any landforms transited by the river, be it the Trench, the Fraser Basin (a lower part of the plateau around Prince George), the Fraser Fault (all the way from Quesnel to Fountain Valley, the Yalakom Fault (the strike of the Bridge River) etc etc. ... or that the river first touches teh Coast Mountains at Lillooet (as of the Bridge River confluence) and transits the Fraser Lowland etc; those aren't what the list is meant for. We're only talking about things in the river or on its banks. I've wondered about Dog Creek Dome and Harrison Hill as landmarks - Harrison Hill is right on the river - but once we start doing that it's every peak from Black Dome Mountain down to Sumas Mtn, and that's not the idea. Maybe for clarity it should be name-specified as, ahem, List of canyons, rapids, bars and rock formations in the Fraser River (or "on the Fraser River" or "of the Fraser River")....most idiomatic is "along the Fraser River", but that wording also could include things near the river, which shouldn't count.....I'm not sure how many fields the table should have; certainly a field for coords, a field for cites, a field for comments, a field for pics....maybe "nearest major centre" would help....but, well, there really aren't any major centres between Williams Lake and Lillooet....Skookum1 (talk) 18:55, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
