Upload dates of 2009 videos

In June 2017, YouTube fixed the upload dates of some videos from 2009. “Bad Romance” was uploaded at 08:15 UTC on Nov 24 2009, but at that time, upload dates were based on the UTC-9 time zone. In January 2010, the policy was changed to have them be based on UTC-8. I have edited the article yesterday to reflect the change. I also fixed two other upload dates. Non-music videos section?

A "non-music videos" section such as that in List of most-liked YouTube videos could be good. Opinions? UnsignificantEditor (talk) 20:14, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Disagree it isn't important and I think you don't have sources for this section--Luke Stark 96 (talk) 20:18, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
I have mixed emotions on the proposal. On one side I would like it, on the other I would actually have a separate article named "List of most-viewed YouTube music videos". However, as most YouTube videos are musical, I am fine with the current situation (even though I would like to see more entries). What about deleting the "non-music videos" in List of most-liked YouTube videos? I support that. --Checco (talk) 07:18, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Wayback Machine for "Baby Shark Dance"

Today when I looked up "Baby Shark Dance" on the Wayback Machine, I found a nasty surprise. Snapshots beyond 6 January 2020 don't have views, likes, or dislikes. This is because comments are automatically disabled for videos made for kids (January 2020 onward) and views, likes, and dislikes are disabled for Wayback snapshots made after that date. How then are we supposed to provide sources for the exact dates BSD reached the various milestones, such as 5 billion views or 6 billion views? Please add {{Citation needed}} after the sentence ""Baby Shark Dance" became the second video to reach five billion views in April 2020." 173.76.246.128 (talk) 09:48, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Fastest videos to 3 billion views/Unavailable video uploaded in 2005

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nAu9D-8srA This video exceeded 3 billion views yesterday and is the 12th most viewed video on Youtube. It was uploaded on February 27, 2018. The days between that date and April 11, 2020 are 774, so I propose that it is included in the fastest videos to reach 3 billion views as it is the third fastest video to do so, dethroning "See you again" that crossed this milestone after 852 days. Also, could we please notice the fastest videos ever to reach 4 billion views? There are five of them now, thus it makes some sense if we highlight the 3 fastest of them to do so. Something else: In the table that lists the top 5 most viewed videos uploaded in each year, the video "Hurt", which was uploaded by beachbuggy and is currently the 5th most viewed video uploaded in 2005, seems to be unavailable. I'm not entirely sure if the following video is actually the 6th most viewed video uploaded in 2005, but it does have a significant number of views for a video uploaded that long ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irp8CNj9qBI Thank you all for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.44.144.95 (talk) 12:00, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Billion View Club

I don't think the addition made by AustinVD is necessary. Ignoring the fact that the information should be presented in a better way (the syntax is all off), the source is their own website (not sure if that's allowed) and the ref only links to the main page. You have to navigate it to see the list of artists with a billion views. The website only lists musical acts, so the section with kid related videos is unsourced. And the list is not complete; for example, BTS has 3 videos with 1b+ views but they're not mentioned anywhere. Which means that it's not a reliable source. Sunlitsky I'm mentioning you because you also expressed doubts about this. What do you think? - Ïvana (talk) 02:55, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Saw this and I will add my say to it. Anyone is free to fix and update it to match actual stats. As for the site, you have to click on the view stats in the corner in order to see it, there is no exact page for it to be linked from. I feel that as long as this is keep tracked of accurately then it should be considered to include. Like I mentioned, anyone is allowed to update it and correct the stats. Also, it should only be artists with at least 4 videos with over 1 billion views. Like you mentioned, BTS only has 3. They don't need to be referenced at all until they have at least 4. If we set the minimum to 3, then there would be too many artists and it will make it look messy AustinVD (talk) 14:19, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Of course my site is still in the process of adding more artists and collecting more data, but as of now it has a lot of the mainstream artists on there (BTS coming soon). What if I agree to make sure these are all accurate with the exception of minimum of 4 for the artists and then other users can also add onto it if something was missed. If we include artists with 3 billion views, then people will want artists with 2 and then 1. It would look too messy and is unnecessary. I would also like to add that, when searching "Cocomelon how many billion view videos" this page does come up as the 4th result. Also noting, this is for channels and not exclusive to artists. If that needs to be more clear in the description of it then let me know. Ozuna has 7 videos with a billion views but not his exact channel. AustinVD (talk) 14:31, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@AustinVD: I agree with the minimum of 4 videos, that isn't the point. What I meant is that BTS is not mentioned at all on your website. Which makes me doubt about the validity of the rest of the stats. Do they only cover english speaking artists? Because I don't see latin artists, like Becky G (she has two 1b+ videos). And the way the information is presented right now, your website is the only ref for the kid and nonkid videos, even tho 1) your website doesn't include kid related videos 2) seems like it only covers a fraction of musical acts. Taking all of that into consideration, I don't think it can be considered a valid source. Anyone is allowed to update and correct the stats, but it has to be properly sourced. If your website is still under construction maybe you shold scrap that section and re add it once the ref reflects the information displayed. - Ïvana (talk) 14:44, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

I am down to agree to this. Can we agree though when my site hits say 1,000 artists then we can re-add the section in? As for the kids related, I won't be adding those to my site since those are not what my site is meant to be for. I currently have around 280 artists on the site and I'm in the process of adding 120 more over the next few months. With other big artists such as BTS, Becky G, and many more. I do have non-english speaking artists on the site, sean paul, pitbull, bad bunny, etc. With more to come though! Can we agree with this? (by the time my site has 1,000 artists it'll also look a lot better too, so the reference can look more legitimate). AustinVD (talk) 16:28, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@AustinVD: Sure! Maybe by that time there will be another source that we can cite for the kid videos. I'll look into it and see what I can find. - Ïvana (talk) 16:40, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Most viewed videos on Youtube (By Year) IS WRONG

Hello, my name is Rob17p, I was interested in how you organize the page "the most viewed videos on youtube" so strictly that anyone cannot edit it. I make this note to inform you that its content in the table "By the year of release" has many errors. As a user who can edit the page, I invite you to look for "Videos más vistos en YouTube por año in Spanish and there you will realize how much they lack.

I HOPE you will check it out to make all the changes

Hello, it appears that the top 5 in both is the same except that the Spanish version does have some in the wrong order, once you compare each list for each year. It is also notable that the English version does not include the original Cyrillic script, but instead Romanized or transliterated the title into the Latin script, as well as translate the title, for the Masha and the Bear video, while the Spanish version keeps the original Cyrillic title. The 2015 section, Sorry by Justin Bieber has about 3.443 Billion views, while Sugar by Maroon 5 has about 3.49 billion which would make Sugar by Maroon 5 the song with the more viewed video by about 47 million views. In the 2016 section, We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez has about 2.665 billion views while Chanteje by Shakira has 2.657 billion views making the video for We Don't Talk Anymore more viewed than Chanteje by a smaller margin of about 8 million views. In the 2018 section, the Bath Song by Cocomelon has about ten million more views than Learning Colors - Colorful Eggs on a Farm by Mikusha TV. Is what your asking for each section to be expanded to include more videos and have the country of the video's origin?Michael Daihong Ly (talk) 21:26, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Michael Daihong Ly

By release by year changes

Hello editors, it's me again, I want to tell you that your table of the most viewed videos by year of release has two errors (2021 and 2012), I invite you to check es:Anexo:Videos más vistos en YouTube por año so that you can review it :)

I directly compared the two lists and it appears they match. Although there are some differences in how some entries are presented, Masha and the Bear is written in the Latin script in the English version because English uses the Latin alphabet, however, it appears that the original Cyrillic is used in the Spanish version. Masha and the Bear is a Russian video so its name would be written Cyrillic in the original version, however, to make it readable for English speakers it has been romanized. Shake the Tree is also on both lists, but in the Spanish version the Creator's name, Sesame Street, has been put in the front while the English version does not put Sesame Street in the front because the creator of the video is already listed as Sesame Street.Michael Daihong Ly (talk) 21:39, 26 July 2021 (UTC)Michael Ly

Slight Changes Needed to "Top Videos" list - New item: "Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (Video)"

Hello, it has come to my concern that the music video "Never Gonna Give You Up" by singer/songwriter Rick Astley has surpassed 1 Billion views on the streaming website Youtube.com. Thank you very much, and I appreciate your help.

Original research

Original research should be removed. There's no conversation to have, there's no reason to discuss this. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 18:17, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

  • My only concern is that even the "Top videos" section is a original research. If we were to remove that, then there is no point in keeping this article in the first place. Sunlitsky (talk) 20:29, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
  • I am not sure whether WP:AFG can be justified here.Sunlitsky (talk) 20:33, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Not really. A rudimentary search for "most viewed YouTube videos" brings up sources like Variety, Polygon, Statista, GQ, The Independent. It could be improved greatly as there are clearly existing issues with the article, but there are sources out there which touch upon the topic which means the article would never be removed, and it's absolutely ludicrous to even suggest there's "no point in keeping the article". The stuff I removed is absolutely nonsense however, blatantly original research and the only source is some YouTube playlist. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 20:45, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
I understand your point of view. What I am trying to say is that although there are wide sources for "most viewed YouTube videos", the list provided in the article will not be the same as the references (the references will always have an outdated list). The list is very dynamic such that it will be impossible to both keep the list up-to-date and match exactly the sources (I think this is the case for most of the list-type articles related to Youtube videos). My point is that there is always some amount of original research involved in the "Top vidoes" section also (that is why the original research tag is placed in that section). Having said that, I agree that the original research in yearly list (perhaps, in the last section also) is higher than in the overall list. In any case, I would suggest to get a consensus before removing a section (that has been there for quite sometime) completely . Sunlitsky (talk) 21:50, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Well I agree, which is why I said "there are clearly existing issues with the article", and which is why I didn't remove that section. But do you really think a consensus is needed to remove original research, when the template has been on the page for five months and hasn't been addressed? I mean, the template literally says "Statements consisting only of original research should be removed". So I did. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 22:33, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Okay. I don't have any objection anymore. Sunlitsky (talk) 22:44, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

"Learning Colors - Colorful Eggs on a Farm" has been privated

I've been keeping my eye on the most viewed videos on YouTube lately and I noticed that it was deleted at some point in the past few days. I'm barely familiar with Wikipedia currently, but I saw that removed videos are indicated in the section for the historical most-viewed videos, so I was wondering if something similar to that should be added for private videos. Still, as I said before, I'm nowhere close to being familiar with Wikipedia so I'm not sure if this is a good idea or a terrible idea.

Update: It had been made public again. SurelyStupid (talk) 05:40, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello North American colleagues, I am from a Latin foreigner and I come to tell you that when I edited the section of the most viewed videos in my languages, "Learning Colors - Colorful Eggs on a Farm" the seventh most viewed video on YouTube is now private, I do not know if it is temporary or permanent but if you click on the link it will tell you private, I don't know what you will do but I just wanted to tell you that :)--Rob17p (talk) 13:25, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

It's original research; while listing the most viewed overall is done in other sources, no reliable source organizes the most viewed by year. --Masem (t) 22:31, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

First Video to Reach One Million Views

The article says, "In November 2005, a Nike advertisement featuring Brazilian football player Ronaldinho became the first video to reach one million views".
The fact that this ad was first is clearly true, based on the Archived data.
However, the video clearly states that it was uploaded in October 2005, not November 2005. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.128.173.252 (talk) 16:01, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Nov 2005 is when the video hit 1M, not its upload date. --Masem (t) 16:03, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Fix punctuation

Woeful punctuation:

being the most watched video on YouTube ever. (if excluding children content, then Despacito by Luis Fonsi)

Should be:

being the most watched video on YouTube ever (if excluding children content, then Despacito by Luis Fonsi).

or

being the most watched video on YouTube ever. (If excluding children content, then Despacito by Luis Fonsi.)

(Bold added for emphasis. Song titles should also be set italic, IMHO.)

Top videos table should categorise

The table in the Top videos section should include a column categorising each video. For instance, categories might include:

  • Pop music
  • Children's song
  • Cartoon
  • Documentary

et cetera.

These could be colour-coded for rapid recognition.

Problem with Historical most-viewed videos table

The table in the Historical most-viewed videos section has a problem or two:

  • "Current record" and "Former record" are not defined — from the article title a reader would expect it to be referring to the number of views, but the colouring in the table implies that it is only for days as the most-viewed video;
  • the symbols (⁂ and *) and shading apparently have not been updated when more recent videos were added!

I guess these various problems reflect the trade-off in protecting an article: reduced vandalism, but increased mistakes.

Intro

Introduction seems a mess. 2 basis things should be clarified, clear as a banner: one, the page is not real-time updated while YT views are (near) real-time updated. Two, many many views in YT (even if we exclude bots, frauds. etc.) are paid views which means they are done (often by humans) behind retribution and not by "real" intention to watch the vid. So the NoV is not an index of vid popularity. "We", as the free encyclopedia should clarify this. MC12GT1 (talk) 13:32, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Yes, the "bot argument" is the principal one for not adding claims such as "As of xxx[date] the video had received xxx[million] views" in many song/single articles. Wikipedia policy ought to be joined up on this topic as to what constitutes a "notable" number of views. I used to think a million views was a lot. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:36, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Bon Jovi, the first artists to have three singles that were released in three different decades to reach over a billion views each on the same channel?

Not counting views from alternate uploads of the songs: It's My Life (2000), Livin' on a Prayer (1986), Always (1994). The 3rd is about to hit that mark. Apparently, Shakira has three singles that almost did the same except "TQG" is uploaded on Karol G's channel since it was first included in the latter's album. All three Jovi songs were released before YT's existence. ShiranuiAensland (talk) 03:21, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

That conclusion is 100% original research, unless you have sources that show that to be a significant fact. Masem (t) 03:23, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
