Lead image

  Resolved

I don't think an image of the statue of Frank Rizzo should be used in the lead for an article about Confederate monuments. Either move this page to Monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests, or replace the lead image with one of a Confederate monument. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:30, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Gallery

  Resolved

On User talk:Another Believer#Gallery we have been discussing whether images should be in a gallery or not. Since this is clearly a rapidly evolving situation and article, I'd suggest setting that topic aside until the article is more stable. deisenbe (talk) 08:09, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

I'm curious to hear what other editors think as well. Should we keep the gallery or try to integrate images throughout the article's prose? I don't think illustrating every single monument should be required; editors can easily click on a monument of interest to see and learn more. @Found5dollar and Yeoutie: Pinging you two as previous talk page contributors. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:17, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Where there is a Commons category for the subject, we could provide a link. I like how they did it on List of National Historic Landmarks in New York, with links below the main image. gobonobo + c 04:47, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Frank Rizzo mural

In addition to the removal of the Frank Rizzo statue, a mural in South Philly's Italian Market was vandalized and then officially painted over Sunday morning (June 7). Some reports say it was removed. 73.81.117.44 (talk) 21:38, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Never mind. I didn't see it already there amongst all the statues. 73.81.117.44 (talk) 23:28, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

One Riot, One Range image

found this image of the One Riot, One Ranger statue, but it's pretty bad.... is it worth cropping and including? Found5dollar (talk) 20:36, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Found5dollar, I'd say something is better than nothing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:37, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Statue of Edward Colston

The Statue of Edward Colston was today pulled down and thrown in the harbour in Bristol, England today, but I am not sure if it should be included in this list, as the lead says "it relates to "glorification of heroes of the Confederacy" which may not apply to Edward Colston but he was significant in the History of slavery.— Rod talk 21:41, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Colston's statue definitely belongs in the list. He was a slave trader and it was a Black Lives Matter demonstration. Currently the lead says that the common theme is the "historical mistreatment of African Americans through slavery, the glorification of the Confederacy, and other official misconduct affecting African Americans." Perhaps a slight rewording? gobonobo + c 03:37, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
+1 ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:59, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
Should this one be separated from the list? It appears in the middle of the list which is all American monuments. For some reason, it seems out of place. Govvy (talk) 13:49, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
Govvy, Since there's now another entry for Belgium, I'd be fine having subsections for U.S. and otherwise. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:52, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
@Another Believer: That looks better and makes much better sense in the global scope on the effect outside of the US in my opinion, good job. Govvy (talk) 15:41, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Hamilton, New Zealand

  Resolved

Authorities in the city of Hamilton removed a bronze statue of Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton – the city’s namesake – who is accused of killing indigenous Maori people in the 1860s. ¶ The removal of the statue came after a Maori tribe requested it to be taken down, with one elder threatening to tear it down himself if officials did not act.

And added. We may want to start giving these statues names like "Statue of Columbus (Minnesota)" to better distinguish them if Columbus statues keep getting torn down. Spirit of Eagle (talk) 23:50, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
Spirit of Eagle, If enough statues of Columbus are removed, we might actually just have a subsection for removed Columbus monuments... Just a thought. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:11, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
That's probably a good idea. We have no way of predicting how the removal of monuments will play out, but if we get enough of a certain category it makes a lot of sense to branch out. Spirit of Eagle (talk) 22:25, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

school renamings, Port Arthur Texas

  Resolved

I am not making a starement about where this should be treated. New Orleans three years ago renamed all schools named for slaveowners, including George Washington.

Port Arthur ISD trustees voted Thursday to strip Confederate names from two of its elementary schools that memorialize Dick Dowling and Robert E. Lee, saying that the new names are "neutral" and "bring people together." Trustees narrowly voted to change the name of Dick Dow-ling Elementary School to Port Acres Elementary School in a 4-3 vote. Trustees Kenneth W. Lofton Sr., the Rev. Donald R. Frank Sr. and board secretary Brandon Bartie voted against the name change, deferring comments to the board president.

Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Lt. Richard "Dick" Dowling will "always be in our books but not on our buildings," said board president Debra Ambroise.

The vote to change Robert E. Lee Elementary to Lakeview Elementary was less contentious, with trustees voting 6-1 in favor of the name switch. The new names are effective immediately.

Note that Dowling statue NOT going to Sabine Pass as previously announced https://www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/article/Happening-now-Bartie-news-conference-on-15336444.php

It looks like the name-change of the elementary schools was approved and went into effect October 2018 rather than during the 2020 protests (for the record, I completely overlooked this myself and only noticed when I had already compiled most of the table information). As for Sabine Pass, this is now referenced in the article. Spirit of Eagle (talk) 02:41, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Subsection for Christopher Columbus?

Should we create a subsection under U.S. for statues of Christoper Columbus? There are quite a few now... ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:43, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

I support this: it would help with organizational and make it easier to find specific statues. By my count, there are already five Columbus statues in the article and there are several more that should be added. Perhaps we could divide the American section into three parts: Confederate, Columbus, and "other statues". Spirit of Eagle (talk) 03:02, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Spirit of Eagle, Feel free to improve further, but I've taken a first stab at a subsection w/ table. I'm sure the first column can be removed since all cells say "Statue of Christopher Columbus". ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:07, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
These subsections are a good idea. I'd also suggest breaking lists down further into statues that have been removed and those that are due to be removed. Konli17 (talk) 07:47, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Deleting content from descriptions

  Resolved

@Featous: What exactly are you trying to accomplish with all of these deletions? [5][6][7] gobonobo + c 19:10, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Keeping the height of description cells less than three times every other cell height when my widescreen is in my typical configuration of two browser windows side by side, which is roughly the width of my laptop window. Before I started trimming, some single rows took up most the height of my screen. Given all the good work that has been done creating separate articles, there is little reason have all the detail here. But I'll stop trimming. Cheers, Featous (talk) 19:23, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Sacramento John Sutter Statue Removed After Recent Vandalism June 15, 2020 at 2:44 pm

A 19th-century European settle and pioneer, Sutter founded the Sutter’s Fort trading post in what would eventually become California’s capital city. His legacy includes not just that fort, but also several landmarks, schools, a mountain range, and even a county named after him.

His legacy isn’t without controversy, as activists and historians have highlighted. Sutter’s record with Native Americans has come under scrutiny in recent years, with some historians saying he enslaved hundreds of natives as part of his business.

I added it to the list. I have NOT added it to the template, nor created a page for the statue. It does appear on List of Confederate monuments and memorials in Virginia. Normal Op (talk) 18:06, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Another Believer, can you make a page for this monument? And add it to the template? (Looks like you're the main person doing that). Normal Op (talk) 20:49, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Normal Op, There are several new additions needing articles. I'll get to this when I can! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:54, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Sacramento

Here's another Statue removed in Sacramento. Can somebody explain or just point to the directions on how to edit the new template for this list? I've been editing for 15 years now and never heard of an RM row. I thought I figured it out but no. This is too complicated with no instructions. Thanks in advance. Kire1975 (talk) 15:08, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

You almost had it; just put a |} on the line beneath your addition. This will basically close off the section so you will get the tables you currently see; without that symbol the table will gobble up the rest of the article. (Quick note: you only need to do this when your addition is the last listing in the table). Spirit of Eagle (talk) 16:40, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@Spirit of Eagle:: I was using the template. Do I enter a new RM row box or a content box for the |}? Thanks. Kire1975 (talk) 16:56, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Instructions at Template:RM row... such as they are. Normal Op (talk) 17:13, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@Kire1975::The entire table is bounded by two symbols: a {| at the start of the code and a |} at the end of the code. Its not a part of any specific row or content box. Think of the two symbols as bread and the row/content boxes as lunch meat; if you don't have two slices of bread/the {| & |} outside the lunch meat/boxes, then you will end up with a mess on your hand. Columbus statue in California capitol

  Resolved

A statue depicting Christopher Columbus that has been the centerpiece of the California Capitol rotunda since 1883 will be removed after legislative leaders decided it is out of place “given the deadly impact his arrival in this hemisphere had on indigenous populations."
