Proposal to remove shooting numbers per town/city

I think the parenthesized numbers next to the town/city as they stand in the mass shooting lists are ugly in format and are not useful for reasons like city boundaries occasionally making it unclear where a shooting occurred, as well as suburbs/unincorporated places colloquially considered part of the city in question. For this reason, Gun Violence Archive uses an approach where they put the smaller, lesser-known place in parentheses (e.g. "Milwaukee (Wauwatosa)"). I do not like their approach and prefer our approach of using the most accurate place name we can find. However, this makes it far less useful as a comparison tool, or attempting to begin analyzing the frequency of mass shootings by city with any degree of accuracy. Appleton (2), for example, doesn't actually mean 2 mass shootings occurred in Appleton as one would understand "Appleton" if a shooting occurs right on the border of Grand Chute, an unincorporated place with Appleton ZIP codes that many consider essentially part of Appleton in all but technicalities.

The only alternative I can think of besides removing the numbers altogether (they didn't exist before a few weeks ago) is grouping shootings by metro area in a separate section or column of the chart, but this has the problem of making the article longer, wider, and requiring more work without significant benefit, and not all shootings occur in metro areas.

Analysis of mass shootings by city/region is better left to external sources such as this map that contains every shooting documented on Gun Violence Archive, and lets you filter by mass shootings. Ottoshade (talk) 07:35, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Proposal to add a column for the type of weapon used

I think one should add a column for the type of weapon used. It can explain a lot of the number of injured and dead. Example: pistol or assault rifle. /Justeraren (talk) 20:37, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

I don't think cluttering the table with another column is necessary. If it's not already in "Description" section it can be added there, with a reliable source. And many of the shootings are linked to a separate Wikipedia article for the interested reader. Sundayclose (talk) 20:46, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Inclusion of Austin shooting

@TomCat4680: @Jax 0677: Hi, you may be interested in this comment by the admin closing the merge decision. Regards, WWGB (talk) 05:39, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Obviously the decision to merge was in error and the shooting doesn't meet the inclusion criteria for this article. Is there much to even discuss here? ‑‑Volteer1 (talk) 05:50, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Injury from something other than a bullet

Should this list include people that were injured from something other than the actual bullet? For instance someone shoots, and window shatters and, people are receive lacerations from the glass?Yousef Raz (talk) 22:50, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

There are mentions for indirect wounds and casualties, but IMHO it must be referenced. A09090091 (talk) 20:57, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
@A09090091 Look at the June 17 shooting in Arizona. Three people were shot yet there's 13 victims because 10 were hit with something other than a bullet.02:16, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
I don't think there is an actual standard, I personally try and shy away from including any injured or killed by non-gunfire in the counts, and will add a minor note about "other injured/killed due to ____" in the description Leaky.Solar (talk) 19:00, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

browser-killer page

macos Firefox choked on my first edit attempt (Activity Monitor showed 4-5GB memory used), was worried I'd lost my work a second time. 700 links seems like a big deal. dunno if Wikipedia can do anything about this. Dunno about submitting Mozilla bug report - was forwarded to a stupid ideas page. Doug Grinbergs (talk) 06:23, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
