Updated list

I believe this list should be updated. I did hear that the following games sold over a million or so:

The comment says that it is "possibly unreliable" and "if possible, replace". Right now the data here is about two years out-of-date and the data is gathered from scattered sources. That is, it's wrong. If a better source isn't used to bring this article up to date, I'd say either use VGChartz (despite that that "site's own methods of extrapolation and adjustment without source referral") or delete the article. I would say either use vgchartz information or delete the entire list because it is so out-of-date the thing is entirely irrelevant now. vgchartz may not be 100% reliable but name a better source. Waiting in hope that once in a blue moon a studio might release its internal figures isn't very viable either. --Crazymaner2003 (talk) 00:23, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

So what you're saying is either a) use figures from a site which has been proven to be false on numerous occasions and have even been retroactively changed to reflect new, officially released data (or worse, the estimates of other sites/companies, such as the NPD)^†, and is therefore disallowed by Wikipedias policies or b) delete all info pertaining to video game release numbers. Please read this before saying we should use VGChartz.

As for "name a better source" - any source which has reliable numbers. Just because you have no more up-to-date figures, doesn't mean we can add false info to an encyclopedia. I say false, rather than potentially false because VGChartz goes so far as to give figures to the individual sale, so the chances are so small that they are correct that they might as well be 0.

† Note that I said retroactively changed, not updated. They have been known to even put out news articles etc stating figures, then quietly change the data in the article without any note stating that they have etc. They also state their figures as facts, when they are at best amateur estimates.

Wrong is the wrong word; it is invalid. If VGChartz is used, we might as well just say "I think it probably sold about this much", because that is basically what they do. Please see this post for more detailed reasons. Alphathon^TM (talk) 09:00, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Halo 3 and 14.5 million copies

I thought I posted this here, but since I have posted it in no less than three other places, it is easy to forget. Anyway, Halo 3 has probably sold more than 8 million copies by now, but it has not sold 14.5, or at least, no source makes that claim. Of course, people love to claim that Halo 3's own official website does say this, but it clearly does not. Let's start by reading the source closely. For ease of reference, here is the offending sentence:

"Halo 3 is the concluding chapter in the Halo trilogy—an international award-winning action series that grew into a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 14.5 million games worldwide, logging more than 650 million hours of multiplayer action on Xbox LIVE."

Notice the use of a dash above. Everything after the dash is an aside that is separate from the first part of the sentence since there is not a second dash to indicate this interjection has come to an end. That leaves us with the following complete thought:

"an international award-winning action series that grew into a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 14.5 million games worldwide, logging more than 650 million hours of multiplayer action on Xbox LIVE."

So the clause "selling 14.5 million games worldwide" is further developing the preceding clause, "an international award-winning action series that grew into a global entertainment phenomenon." That's just how the English language works.

Also, check out http://on-screen.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html, a blog post from February 2007, which has the exact same language. The language on the Halo 3 web page is clearly from a press release issued sometime before Halo 3 was even released, perhaps even from the original press release announcing the game. Reinsertion of old list

I already said that the sales you have reinserted after the game minecraft are older sales and so do not match while the sales from Kinect adventures to Minecraft is an updated list. No offence but why are you inserting the old list with the updated list. Also many Xbox games have sold 3 million copies the last one being Kung Fu Panda and they are about 36 which is a lot, so there is probably no need to mention games who have sold 1 million anymore. I am not removing them because they are not sourced to statisticsbrain.com but because they are sales count from 2010 and the new list is from 2012, only a half year old. Why is them being sourced from 2010 a problem? Many of the games that have been released for the 360 will not have had any significant sales after the first year of their release, which for launch titles would be as far back as 2007. Publishers generally do not release life-to-date sales figures for every single game they've ever made every financial quarter (or whatever); they release a single figure when there is a financial incentive to do so (basically saying "our game has sold well, buy shares in us"). There are a few exceptions, such as Capcom, who maintain a list of million+ selling games^[1] (albeit cross-platform sales)^† and Polyphony Digital, who maintain a list of the total sales for all their games.^[2]

By its very nature, a list like this will always have mismatched "as of" dates, since sales data will never be released for all games at the same time. It is also irrelevant though - if we know a game has sold 1 million copies, that number is not going to decrease. Some similar figures can go down (for example subscribers to a service or MMO) but total-sales will never decrease. As such, they are a minimum figure, so out of date or not, they are still relevant.

The only legitimate reason I can think of to remove said old sales would be if we changed the entry criterion to, for example and as you suggested, 3 million. However, to do that we'd need a more concrete reason than "there are lots of 1 million sellers". The reason for that is that this list doesn't exist in isolation. It isn't merely a comparison of million+ selling games on the 360, but a list that is available for comparison with other system's million+ selling games. The only reason it has its own article is that there are a lot of high-selling 360 games, so they don't practically fit in List of best-selling video games (see WP:SPLIT, as this is essentially what has been done; this is also the reason why the criterion for inclusion on List of best-selling video games for such articles is lower - they are acting as a summary of the main/split article). The same is true of quite a few other systems, such as the PS2, PC, NES, Game Boy and DS. It is not however the case for, for example, the PS3, the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, the Dreamcast, or any of the second generation systems, many of which don't even make it on to the main list. Additionally, such a large change to what qualifies for this article would need at least some broader consensus. The article as-is, including sales between 1 and 3 million, is at least somewhat stable, implying that there is at least no major objection for including those figures up to this point. ^† which is where the number for Dead Rising's sales are sourced to, so even if being out of date were a reasonable reason to remove something from the list, that particular entry still wouldn't qualify.

Grand Theft Auto V

Unexact sale numbers of CoD: MW3 on BGR

On this site the sales are given to be more than 7 million on Xbox 360. I don't know which game lab is they are talking about in this article. Is this site reliable? It does have an entry on Wikipedia though: Boy Genius Report. KahnJohn27 (talk) 10:45, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
