Talk:List of baseball players who went directly to Major League Baseball/Archive 1

John Olerud

Should there be a note for John Olerud? He did spend a few games in 2005 for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, before being called up to the Boston Red Sox.

I ask because the title of the article is "List of Major League Baseball players who never played in the minor leagues," which he no longer is, yet the first line of the article states, "A number of professional baseball players were able to skip a career in the minor leagues before appearing in their first major league baseball game..."

This might confuse some people as to whether the article is a list of players who NEVER played in the minors, or those who SKIPPED the minors, but later could have played, perhaps on rehab assignment. Fuzzybunny566 (talk) 13:25, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I think the title of this article should be changed - I fell out of baseball for some time, but I'm pretty sure Jim Abbot ended up going back to the minors as well. My suggestion, though wordy, would be "List of Major League Baseball players who went directly from college to the Major Leagues" --70.108.116.231 17:11, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
This applies to David Clyde as well. I agree that the title doesn't exactly represent what the list really is about, but your suggestion doesn't quite work either, as some (such as Clyde) went straight from high school to the majors. I can't really think of a concise and accurate way to re-title it though... -Elmer Clark (talk) 06:43, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Satchel Paige

What about Satchel Paige? I'm pretty sure (and his writeup seems to say) that he went straight from the Negro Leagues to the Indians. Larryepke (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 18:21, November 1, 2006

The Negro League was a professional endeavor. Perhaps some special section for people like Paige, Ichiro Suzuki and others would work. // Tecmobowl (talk) 04:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Ernie Banks played in one of the Negro Leagues, too, didn't he? Mab819c (talk) 17:36, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Page Moved

I moved the page. The person who moved it in the first place did not do a good job. As the intro section clearly states the intent of the compilation, I feel the new title is as appropriate as you can get without moving this thing to some really really long "title". Noting Bonus Babies

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to communicate who was a bonus baby? Should we highlight them with a new color, add some sort of asterisk, or is there another suggestion?? // Tecmobowl 09:46, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

The easiest solution is to mark bonus babies with italics, and bold italics for those who made the Hall of Fame. I hope someone will step up to the task. YLee (talk) 12:01, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Robin Yount doesn't belong on this list. He debuted with Newark of the NYP League in 1973. My source is the 1989 Sporting News Official Baseball Register.

Von McDaniel is likely also erroneously listed here. I'm almost positive he pitched a few games in D ball in 1957 before joining the Cardinals. A 1958 Topps baseball card would likely confirm that. Sgturner65 (talk) 17:53, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Yount definitely didn't belong, McDaniel was in fact a bonus baby. // Tecmobowl (talk) 21:45, 28 March 2007 (UTC
