The Inclusion of Doki Doki Literature Club!

Hey guys,

So in the end of 2017 and going into 2018, the free psychological horror game "Doki Doki Literature Club!" has exploded in popularity in form of memes, and in my opinion is nearing the requirements to reach the all holy Gaming list of internet phenomena, in between "All your base are belong to us" and the mobile game Flappy Bird. Although, some parts of the game (Including but not limited to Sayori's suicide and Yuri's self stabbing and creepy poem) are some of the most shocking things on the entire list of internet phenomena alone, it might be not enough to exclude it from the list. Well, apart from no mention of any DDLC related memes out on the web, mainly involving Sayori's suicide. I'll write the mock-up synopsis of the game if it's on the list here:

  • Doki Doki Literature Club! - A free to play dating simulator/psychological horror game released on Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux on September 22nd, 2017, made by a team led by former Super Smash Bros. Melee modder Dan Salvato. The club president in the game, Monika, uses heavy amounts of fourth wall breaking and game file manipulation to confess her love to the person who is playing the game instead of the protagonist. Suicide also plays a role in the game, mostly during the protagonist's childhood friend Sayori's suicide scene.

Do you agree with me?

Lelcatz39 (talk) 23:47, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

We need coverage from beyond gaming sites that the game induced a meme. I am fully aware of the game (just as Undertale) but have yet to seen a source that could be used for it, just as there was a lack of such for Understale. --Masem (t) 00:22, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Hey everyone! Do you know the way and the sonic meme should be added to this. They are both very relevant and big memes and internet phenomena's. The page is also lacking a lot of other internet phenomena's, but I do understand it is almost impossible to keep up because there are so many. All the information on the page seems up to date and in check though, so good job.01:30, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Oppose This article has been covered in hundreds of major news outlets and has been in scientific studies. If the article was merged, the information on this topic would be a one sentence mention on the Internet Phenomena page, which isn't nearly enough information to cover the topic. 344917661X (talk) 22:54, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose - The AFD you started on this closed less than 12 hours before you opened this thread. Added World's First Internet Sensation section

Hi Wikipedians - I drafted a paragraph relating to the world's first Internet sensation. I had the intent of expanding on this because I believe the history of Internet sensations is relevant to this article as well. I wanted to post a note to invite feedback or discussion if needed ... thanks!

Ronniebrown2 (talk ·contribs) 10:36, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Removed. I highly doubt that was, in fact, the "world's first internet sensation." According to whom? It could be re-added to the appropriate section, but you're placing undue weight on the beanie babies thing by added it to the first section on the list.
  • @Wiki.Tango.Foxtrot: - I cited the most compelling source for that paragraph which was a book published by Penguin Books and the book itself cites 100's of reputable sources to that claim. I could directly cite all of those sources which would include over 100 newspaper sources from 1995-1997 including Wall Street Journal and New York Post, as well as magazines such as People Magazine and Fortune that all support the claim but I thought it would be excessive and would make the one paragraph have a disproportionate amount of citations but I will go ahead and revise and add some of the more prominent sources in addition to the book right now. The phenomenon is certainly more than just a "beanie babies thing" if you research the phenomenon - do any other Wikipedians have any feedback on this? I worked hard on the references and paragraph and this was added in several sessions over time, please discuss before sniping as I believe that the sources are reputable and the claims are valid. We can also consider citing the year of all the entries on this page and put them all in chronological order - I am willing to help on that maybe if some other contributors could team up with me to do that. Why Montage parodies or MLG Montage was not included here

"MLG montages" should be added in Gaming section. MLG Montages meme has become an important part of YouTube and the whole Internet history, we can't unmention it in this article. 4 years ago this meme was #1 on YouTube and why it doesn't have a place here. I see on the page "List of internet phenomena" in French has included this. MLGs are about the video game montage editing for humorous and seizing effects. It first appeared in 2011 and reached its peak in 2014. But now, in 2018 this article still doesn't have any mention to this. While the culture spreaded all over the internet and many other memes are based on it. There are merchandises like T-shirts and hats with MLG images on them and also, the game 420BLAZEIT, whose main theme is MLG had become a viral sensation back then. There're rumors that this meme is a "dead" meme but it was once a big phenomena, the most famous meme culture on YouTube. We can't forget someone famous when they die, so why not this meme? It has much notability to be included. Someone did request this meme to be added in 2014, but they didn't provide the links for verification, so I do it one more time, with the links following (all of these are reliable). I desperately hope this meme to have a place here.--Seventhsister23 (talk) 08:04, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

List of Internet phenomenaList of Internet memes – Obvious scope of this article. The email section might be out of scope, but that's fixed by deleting it, not indiscriminately including anything related to the Internet and calling it a "phenomenon" instead of being consistent by using the name of the Wikipedia article on the topic, Internet meme. Notice that viral phenomenons are just memes and cover many of these. wumbolo ^^^ 10:23, 28 December 2018 (UTC)--Relisted. –Ammarpad (talk) 15:56, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Mild Oppose, was ready to support but then saw you want to delete the E-mail section, which is substantial and important to the topic. Can't it just be left as is since the e-mail entries can be called memes as well? Randy Kryn (talk) 23:57, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose This is more than just memes, but things that were sparked due to popularity on the Internet. That would include memes, viral videos (which had to be pulled to its own list), challenges, etc. --Masem (t) 00:00, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Challenges and viral videos are memes. wumbolo ^^^ 11:51, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Reading the archives, the word meme was avoided because it's too "easy" for arguing inclusion of a meme while the term Internet phenomena sets a slightly higher bar to make this list maintainable. This points to why the email section is on here. --Masem (t) 12:24, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
The article's lead defines the scope of the list, and it says that it is about Internet memes. wumbolo ^^^ 12:32, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Then why does the nom call for removing the e-mail section? Randy Kryn (talk) 13:00, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Then we should change the lede, as there are definitely things long on this list that I have a really hard time calling a meme (as the term is normally used in its lowest common denominator). The list absolutely includes memes but is not limited to them. --Masem (t) 13:09, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Then this article fails WP:LISTN, there is no such thing as an "Internet phenomenon". Internet meme is a well-defined concept which should definitely have its own list article; sections which are determined to be out of scope can be moved to new articles, which can be linked in the See also section. wumbolo ^^^ 13:16, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
  • I oppose moving the page - I think rather, there should be a second page created because there is so much fragmented content on this page. There are legitimate Internet Phenomenon and then there is a list of memes and other sort of viral content. It is two different things. Ronniebrown2 (talk ·contribs) 13:15, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Constitute for what is considered Animation and Comics vs Film and Television?

When I was editing here, I noticed that the consistency of which memes go where is not very good. SpongeBob is technically a TV Show as does The Simpsons, yet "Steamed Hams" is in the Film and Television section while "Bart Hits Homer With A Chair" is in the "Animation and Comics" section. I would like to ask if we can clarify which of the shows should go in whichever section, or otherwise clarify what is considered a good candidate for either article section.

Thanks, Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:04, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Likewise is a problem for "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:08, 22 February 2019 (UTC)
All the Simpsons memes could go under one 'The Simpsons' subheading in whatever section seems appropriate. The Simpsons and Spongebob could go under Film and TV, since they are mostly TV shows, rather than comics.--SonnikuSan (talk) 22:13, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

'No Mercy?'

After a brief look at the page, I realised there was nothing on the' No Mercy/maybe I'll be Tracer' meme. Should it be added, and under what category? SonnikuSan (talk) 19:54, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

It hasn't gotten much coverage outside of the gaming community, and even then, not much. --Masem (t) 19:56, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
I still think it could be acknowledged, if not here then on the game's page? The phrase used to be quoted by friends at school day in day out, and the original video (at time of writing) has 51 million views. Memer 'Grandayy' did a few videos on it. It mainly became popular on TikTok as well. But I dunno. I'm new to Wikipedia, and actually just bought the game. If anyone else feels like doing something, go ahead, put it on the Overwatch page. But I'm not looking to pick a fight.--SonnikuSan (talk) 22:07, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
Just because its popular doesn't mean its necessary something we can document. The best I've seen to document it is the harassment that users on TikTok have gotten, which is not the same as being a meme. --Masem (t) 22:28, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Undertale/Deltarune - The two indie RPG games by Toby Fox (in which the latter is a spin-off to the former's success) that have created several memes within the game's characters, such as the soundtrack MEGALOVANIA and the player's true gender in Undertale, and Lancer's "real" face in Deltarune. Undertale's release has also created an enormous fan base with numerous fan-made games, soundtracks, and arts. WP:CSC

Is there a good reason why this list doesn't conform to any of the criteria set out in WP:CSC? The guideline says that stand-alone lists should either (1) consist solely of notable topics, (2) consist solely of non-notable topics, or (3) consist list of every indisputable member of a given group. The second and third options aren't really applicable here, so I think this list ought to take the first approach. WP:CSC is a description of common practice rather than a requirement, but I don't see any reason to adopt it in this case, especially as the list is already too long and mostly trivial. (I'm asking in part because I was going to create a redirect at Ligma (meme), to partially resolve the problem of people adding trivia to Ligma (disambiguation), but couldn't see any justification for the "ligma" meme being listed here.) Apologies if this has been discussed recently – I couldn't find anything relevant in the archives but might have missed something. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 22:56, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

CSC is a guideline, not policy. There are memes that can be documented with good sourcing (eg from NYTimes or WaPost or equivalent) but have no place to be readily placed anywhere else in WP. There's been at least a few memes that were in standalone articles but were merged and redirected into here, so we can't use notability as a requirement here. --Masem (t) 20:50, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

The song and music video for Chicken Noodle Soup was released on the 27th of September, performed by BTS member J-Hope featuring American singer-songwriter, Becky G. After releasing the video BTS went to TikTok, a popular creators app, to show off some of the choreography. Some other members showed their support for him by dancing to the song. These videos quickly became viral on the app and many people recreated the dance, with a lot of people becoming more aware of the uprising Korean culture in the West(the K-wave)and also more accepting/open-minded.

Should the Distraction Dance be on the page? It has been popular since The Henry Stickmin Collection came out, and it spawned a bunch of memes where the game's titular character distracts someone.--24.44.76.88 (talk) 20:55, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Add under Animation Characters section

Bob the Train is a children's educational series that premiered on YouTube in 2013. The first video Bob the Train Alphabet Adventure has been viewed over 500 million times.[1] It is produced by USP Studios, an e-learning-focused company that has created 50 original animated characters and launched 500 YouTube channels (with content translated into more than 25 languages) including Kids ABC TV, Baby Box, and Kids Channel Play Doh. It is named a "children's favorite" by Wired magazine.[2] The platform’s videos have been viewed more than 12 billion times to date. In 2018, the series premiered on Amazon Prime and launched a line of toys. The voice of Bob the Train is done by Los Angeles voice actor Zack Taylor. Paste this content in the "Videos" section (Between Ben Drowned and Brad's Wife). Feel free to edit format if it's incorrect, or remove redundant content. I've read that Daily Dot is considered a reliable source for internet culture. As per Wikipedia policy, while this isn't currently notable, it was notable in 2017 so it should count.

  • Boneless Pizza – A YouTube video consisting of a slideshow of image macros with a voiceover depicting a character ordering "Boneless pizza" from a pizzeria. Based off of a prank call made by the video's creator and his friends and uses teen slang popular around the late 2010s. A video series in the same format was created in response to its popularity.[4]

Not done A single source using the Daily Dot ( a source that generally covers Internet things) , and which I cannot see any other sourcing for, isn't appropriate for this list. That makes very narrow and a fad. --Masem (t) 03:47, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
@Masem: Many of these entries have a single source, and I’ve found 18 things on the list sourced by Daily Dot. Daily Dot, like you said, covers internet things and since this page is about internet phenomena I don’t see how that’s wrong. And given that reasoning that fads do not count since they aren’t presently notable (Which isn’t a good argument in accordance to Wikipedia policy), why did you not remove The Room? It’s a decade old fad. 2603:7000:1F00:6B91:28B5:AC36:F0DE:6821 (talk) 11:02, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Remove "The Room" from the "Film and telivision" sectionm as well as its referencesm and the image of Tommy Wiseau. For one the sources used (www.cleveland.com and ew.com) are not reliable and aren't listed in Wikipedia's list of veritable sources. Secondly, it was not notable enough (At the time it became "Popular") to be a good addition to the list. 2603:7000:1F00:6B91:A1CE:9E3:19DD:40FD (talk) 02:49, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Not done There's no list of what sources are reliable (only WP:RS/P of sources that are commonly brought up in question). Cleveland.com is the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and ew.com is Entertainment Weekly, both reliable. And memes may fade away but they don't lose their notability once established. --Masem (t) 03:45, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
@Masem: Given that reasoning that fads do not lose their notability once established, why did you reject Boneless Pizza? They’re both equally notable. BP was a very strong meme in summer of 2017, and we have plenty of seasonal memes on the page already like the Lamar roast, since they were significantly notable at the time. That bit is only sourced by a single article while the recreation is sourced by another.2603:7000:1F00:6B91:28B5:AC36:F0DE:6821 (talk) 10:55, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
For Boneless Pizza, I could only find one source at all to support it (the one you gave). While there may be entries here with one source, there are other sources that also talk about it that aren't included or listed at the WP article page that go into more detail. --Masem (t) 13:04, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

I readded Get Stick Bugged Lol, Siren Head, Surreal meme with reliable sources whose the website have the pages in-depth about the memes, Unregistered HyperCam 2, it seems there no other website than Know Your Meme in-depth has dedicated article for them, so I type texts I knows.

Cartoon Cat neither has website with dedicated article, Dancing Triangle, Polish Cow, Sound Variations only Know Your Meme has dedicated articles about them, Cartoon Cat, Dancing Triangle, Polish Cow has Wikia articles about them, but some contents refers from Know Your Meme. Just because they are okay there doesn't make them good for here. If we were using sources like ScreenRant and Twinfinite (sources that cover Internet things day-to-day) for this list, this list would be HUGE and would be unwieldy. We're trying to keep this to those memes that have hit more mainstream press outside of the sources that normally cover Internet happenings. --Masem (t) 16:38, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Replace the "Among Us" section with the following text, the existing text references The Henry Stickmin Collection which is not cited in the article, nor is it related to the game's popularity.

  • Among Us – A game made by game studio Innersloth released on Steam in 2018 that plays similarly to the party game Mafia. The game reached internet fame in 2020 due to Twitch streamers and YouTubers playing the game frequently. Still images from the game, phrases from the game like "Emergency Meeting" and "Dead body reported" as well as occurances in the game (A player lying about who the Imposter is) have influenced internet memes. Other terms like "Sus", "Sussy", "Sussy Baka" and "Amogus” also became notable modern ironic memes on platforms like Twitter and TikTok.[1][2]

Not done We can't use Know Your Meme or random YouTube videos for sourcing. And we're also looking for memes based on games (like Portal's memes); if the game itself is successful but primarily for the game, we don't include that here. --Masem (t) 20:17, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

Ok, I understand the yt video source, but what about the submissions like "Can it run Doom"? and "Surgeon Simulator"? I feel like those fall into the same description you made due to "Can it run Doom" not coming from the game itself and Surgeon Simulator being just a game with no meme attached to it. ChickenLover21 (talk) 20:25, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

It is an internet phenomenon due to the game being downloaded over a billion times and it being the oldest well known and popular mobile game franchise to date.ChickenLover21 (talk) 20:32, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

That makes it a video game phenomenon (and I presume its page covers that), but not an internet phenomena (aka Internet memes). And that applies to Surgeon Simulator too (it is infact using one unreliable source, the Forbes contributor piece) so I'm removing that for the same reason. But "Can it run Doom" is 100% a meme. --Masem (t) 21:15, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

Include Renegade Dance?

I feel that it would be worthwhile to include the Renegade dance (the TikTok dance trend set to the song Lottery (K Camp song) by K Camp in the dance section. The trend was responsible for the rise of stars like Charli D'Amelio and Addison Rae and serves as an interesting backdrop for issues relating to race and credit for internet content-creation. Additionally, there is a lack of TikTok trends in the dance section which seems like an oversight given the popularity of such trends on the app. DobroHoras (talk) 22:50, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Kirby falling down a cliff

Has the “Kirby falling down a cliff” meme been mentioned here yet? It’s basically a clip from the first episode of Kirby: Right Back at Ya (Hoshi no Kaabii) where King Dedede knocks Kirby off a cliff with his hammer. This meme has gained popularity lately, showing clips of characters falling only to quickly be replaced by the clip of Kirby falling down a cliff. I think this might have happened because of the reveal of Kazuya from Tekken in Super Smash Bros (at the end of his reveal trailer, he throws Kirby off a cliff, much like Dedede did) but I’m not completely sure.

Anyway, as a Kirby fan I find it really funny. I think someone should add it.

Speaking of which, has anyone here added Deltarune memes? The phrase “BIG SHOT!!” uttered by Spamton has been spreading around the internet like a computer virus.

… know what imma just go now. add Kirby.

I'm not in the position to create an account at the moment, but I feel it would be prudent to include the MS Paint Adventures website under the Animation and Comics category. MSPA contains a few well known and well referenced comics, such as Jailbreak and Homestuck, which had a massive cult following during it's run in the early 2010s. Homestuck has been referred to both as a modern Gesamtkunstwerk as well as the "Ulysses Of the Internet" due in pert to it's complexity and length. I would normall WP:BE BOLD and add it myself, but the page is semi-protected and I cannot fetch the requisite references at the moment.

Nomination for "Goblin Mode"

Goblin mode -- A term created in 2009 that was popularized in 2022 after a doctored headline featuring Julia Fox (citation) (citation). It is a state of being described as "unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations". The phrase won Oxford's "Word of the Year 2022" against the words metaverse and #IStandWith (citation).
