I can't understand why you think that Doreen and Wilfred are still in the show when Doreen last appeared early December 2007 and Wilf early October, maybe the Neeson's MAY appear again so they are in the Recurring section again, it does show that in a coming episode Ryan has just come back from a holiday with Nick again, so Nick might be seen --Dodgechris (talk) 09:05, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Craig Charles

IMDB is listing Craig Charles as departing during 2006. Anyone have any more info on this? Essexmutant 21:20, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

That's likely since his original contract runs out soon. Due to the problems between him and the producers, it is possible they won't renew his contract when it expires. On the other hand, the IMDB has previously listed Pauline Fleming as departing in 2005 and that never happened.

What is the criteria for a character to become "departing"? Ronnie is listed as departing yet apparently leaves in November, a good 7 months away.

I have cleaned up most of the article and arranged it. I've also removed "Departing Characters"; if a character has left, place it in "Past characters". She is refered to as Casey and is credited as casey, so her name should be casey in the list, not kim.

Recurring Characters section needed?

How do we know if someone is a recurring character or not? I could see Yvonne and Ivor but what about George Trench and Wiki Dankowska? I mean it was big news about Keith Barron joining the show. What about characters like Doreen or Finlay? Why are they in the regular section and not in the recurring section? Emmerdale doesn't have a recurring characters chart and Eastenders had a similar problem with the character of Heather when Digital Spy noted that she was was semi-regular but they still kept her on the main characters chart. Finally, Where is it actually written about characters like Doreen, George or Wiki, as to their contract status, like the American soaps? With just a few exceptions, I have never read on websites or Inside Soap, that such and such a character has signed a contract or will be a recurring player, only that they were hired in the show. Do we know for sure if these characters are just laying low for a while and then being brought into a major storyline like John Stape? Do we even need this section? Can we notjust integrate them into the regular cast section.

Duration??

The duration dates shown seem to be for the actors rather than the characters. For example Sarah-Louise Grimshaw has been in the soap since 1987. Archie Shuttleworth is still down as recurring eventhough he has not appeared for a long long time. Also Lauren WIlson is down as departing April 08 but the citation offers no proof. Have Ivor Priestley, George Trench, Abi Sharpe, and Nick, Wendy and Alex Neeson left the show? The Neeson's won't be seen again, as the babyswap storyline is over, therefore they're in the past characters section. However if they do appear again, feel free to put them back in the recurring characters section.

Abi Sharpe was an extra character for Mel Morton, who departs late 2008, therefore for now she is in the departing characters section. However if she doesn't leave, feel free to put her back to recurring characters section.

Episodic characters

Should these not stay in the current cast list? There are many more cast members on 'episodic' contracts, such as Rita, Norris and Betty and I think it would be best to just merge the two, since they are neither recurring or departing. Reccuring, Guest and Main

Why do people keep deleting the recurring character section. Characters such as Minnie Chandra, Len Windass and Ben Richardson are only recurring and should be on the recurring list. Because it's a thoughtless edit. Jack Duckworth a recurring character!? It's ruined the page now. It will take ages to repair it. Minnie Chandra, Ben Richardson and Sian Powers are also part of the main cast. Yet they are reccuring? They have pages on the official website... Sort the mess you've made out. Unless you go out and find the non existant sources confirming these are recurring characters your edits will just be reverted. Simple really. Although Ramsay Cleg and DC Hooch... they are recurring. I agree with Raintheone, I don't actually see the point of the recurring character section, no-one has any sources to say these are recurring do they? Umed Alahan in particular keeps getting put on there, yet he is living on the street and is seen as regularly as the likes of Dev, Pam and Kirk - how on earth does this make him recurring? Minnie also works on the Street, and is seen just as regularly as Darryl, Teresa and Amber. The only characters who could qualify for recurring status in my opinion, or maybe just guest status, are DC Hooch and Slug. Maybe Len at a push, but no-one else. Can we revisit this topic? There seems to be a lot of edit warring going on over the "Recurring characters" list in particular. I accept that all the infant characters are inherently recurring, but I think for the adult characters some sort of reference is needed to verify their status. For Jack Duckworth all I've so far found is this article from July 2009, which specifically states that "Bill's episodes haven't been reduced". There's also this piece on Rachel Leskovac which states she has a three year contract with the show. I think that assuming a character is "recurring" based on how often they appear on screen as opposed to based on a reliable source stating they have a recurring contract is original research. Emily Bishop's tenure

Now, I know this one has been discussed to death. Personally I completely disagree with the '1960' bit - I've seen the episodes and she's nowhere to be seen!

But that's not what I created this section for. Recently someone changed it to "1960, 1961, 1962-1966, 1967-" which is absolutely correct in my opinion (apart from 1960). There was a strike at Granada at the back end of 1961 and only fourteen main players held the show for about six months, Emily was not one of them. She disappeared and only returned the next year when the strike was over. Then in 1966 she became pregnant and took a lengthy maternity leave. Including that is no different to including Carla's or Leanne's.

Does anyone agree that it should stay this way? I can just see on the horizon another edit war unless resolved. AJ21SW (talk) 09:22, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Maggie Jones

Ok, so I've made my thoughts on this clear on the edit history page, but I'd like to ask you all what you think. As you probably know Maggie Jones is currently in hospital and has been written out for the forseeable future. Sources are claiming she won't be on screens for at least three months, and there is still no guarantee when or if she will return at all. Wiki needs references, and there are none to prove otherwise. Now, we usually include absences like this all the time particularly for maternity/paternity leaves, but some are disputing this one despite it being heavily sourced.

She will be off-screen for an extended period of time, therefore, according to my dictionary, during this period, she will not be 'current'. The fact is, there is no guarantee she will return until the actress has recovered and makes the decision herself, and we shouldn't assume that she will just step back into her role from her hospital bed. Until we have official confirmation from a reliable source, she is still classed as departing. Minnie Chandra

This character has not left the series. There has been no announcement of her quitting, no confirmation from the actress, no source what so ever. When I realised the duplication, I redirected the latter here, just because this page seemed to be more up-to-date and more frequently contributed to. Previous actors

So what's the general concensus on this? There seems to be a divide in the editing so far. Personally, although I didn't put it in myself, I agree with it's presence as I find it quite informative, and I can't understand why it was ever removed in the first place. My view is and always has been to make every article the most useful and informative it can be, it's what Wiki is for in my opinion, and actor history is definitely an important point. As it is, without looking at the page itself, you'd think Chris Gascoyne has played Peter Barlow on and off for 45 years. With the previous actors box, it makes it clear that is not the case.
