"...thousands of years ago..." suggests a time before the Common Era: this phrase could be made both more specific and more accurate. --Wetman 06:36, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merge from Köräş

edit

"Köräş" and Kurash are the same word, they just mean wrestling. The topic is Central Asian wrestling. The rules are generally the same throughout Central Asia, although they do vary locally as to particulars, but the Uzbek rules are the ones that have been selected by the International Kurash Association. Two articles are not needed for a distinction that is marginal at best. --Bejnar (talk) 15:51, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Probably you are right. The article Köräş can be a section of the larger/more generic article of Kurash. Ggia (talk) 17:48, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I disagree. Kurash is a very distinct form, and is an aspect of Uzbek culture. As such, it is different from Koras, and is entitled to a separate article. The Scythian 18:38, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is a distinct form, but it is not separate, it is derived. --Bejnar (talk) 00:05, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The article Köräş does not says many things.. if it is so different than Kurash.. we don't need to merge it - information should be added.. but seems that both wrestlings are close and the same image is used in both articles [1]. Ggia (talk) 01:20, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
They have the same origin, but modern day Kurash has taken a very different and far more formalized direction. In my mind, that makes it very distinct from generalized Central Asian wrestling. The Scythian 21:15, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes.. but why not to merge all of them in the same article and mention all differences.. and more specific issues? Ggia (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Simple, they are all not all the same "thing." Then by your logic, every wrestling style practiced from Istanbul to Mongolia should be merged into a single article. That does a disservice to the subjects at hand. The Scythian 18:15, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The merge proposal has been up for two years and the distinction between the two topics still has not been clarified. I cannot really see the difference between them; the two articles do not mention the distinction, and they even list the same competitions and events. I propose to merge both articles into a single article called "Central Asian wrestling" or "Kurash". If there are national variants, they can be sections or separate articles, say "Uzbek Wrestling" or "Uzbek Kurash" or "Uzbek Köräş" (But please remember that this is the English Wikipedia, so articles should be written and named for the benefit of generic English-speaking readers from Albania to Zanzibar, not just for nationals of the countries in question.) All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 02:44, 12 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
