Although there is confusion over the use of this term in early ethnographic literature, Kutatja is now quite distinct from Luritja and refers to a Western Desert language bloc north of Lake Mackay, with Balgo, Western Australia as its major settlement. For example, an current expert on the anthropology of the area writes that the "lands of the Kukatja stretch from the north of Lake Mackay to the Stansmore Range" (Poirier, S. (2005) A World of Relationships: Itineraries, Dreams and Events in the Australian Western Desert. Univ. Toronto Press., p.4), and likewise others assert that "Nowadays ... the Kukatja are mainly settled on the southern edge of the Kimberley in Wirrimanu (Balgo Hills) and its outstations" (Graham, L.D. (2003) The Creation of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) in Pintupi/Kukatja Dreamings, Australian Aboriginal Studies 2003/1, 30-38).
Accordingly, I have revised the redirection for Kukatja from Luritja to Balgo, Western Australia until such time as it has a proper entry in its own right.
