Re: the claim that Shubin was a Comintern representative in America, I can only find it in the Regnery book currently cited in the article. Nothing in E.H. Carr's book on the Comintern in the early 1930s, nothing in any of the post-Soviet books on the topic, etc. Last I checked, Regnery doesn't do peer review, so a better source would be nice. Well, anybody can do a search on print.google.com and cut-and-paste the results :) The real challenge is identifying and sorting out agenda-driven memoirs, ambiguous archival documents, non-peer reviewed books like this Regnery volume, etc. and then checking against standard reference sources, looking for contradictions, inconsistencies, confirmations and so on.
Anyway, there was a fairly well known Petr Abramovich Shubin (Vilensky) (1878-1937) in the Comintern Political Secretariat in the late 1920s, and there is a reference to an "L. Shubin" in later Comintern documents during the Spanish Civil War, but I can't find anything on "Joel Shubin". Also, he may have used "Joel" as his first name if/when he lived in America, it wasn't uncommon at the time. Strong's papers at the University of Washingtons Manuscripts and Archives may yield a clue or two, but oh well :) Ahasuerus 03:56, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
