Faith

edit

His mom is catholic, his dad was Jewish. He isn't religious

Judaism is both an ethnicity and a faith. You can be totally irreligious and still technically Jewish (Woody Allen, for example, is an atheist). Also, while Judaism traditionally goes by the mother, there are denominations that accept those with only a Jewish father (what's informally known as "half-Jewish"). Thus, he could be considered of Jewish descent, if nothing else.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 05:11, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Is there a reliable source that states unequivocally that he is Jewish? DonIago (talk) 05:16, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
The article itself identifies him as having Polish Jewish grandparents and provides two sources that confirm it. As I explained above, this is technically adequate.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 05:25, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
No, it's not. DonIago (talk) 13:10, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

That doesn't apply here. In an academic context, "Jewish" can refer to ethnicity and/or culture rather than religion, such as with Jewish atheism or secular Judaism. Furthermore, if you look at Category:Jewish rock musicians, you will see it contains people like Lou Reed, Adam Lambert, and Pink, who are ethnically Jewish and may have been raised in that culture but otherwise do not practice religion of any kind. Therefore, in this context, it would be no less inaccurate to call him "Jewish" than to refer to him as Polish or Italian.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 00:21, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, it is inappropriate for you to re-add the category without a consensus to do so at this time. Secondly, WP:OTHERSTUFF with regards to the other people you cited. Unless you can provide a statement from Schwartzman stating that he considers himself Jewish I don't believe it's appropriate to apply the category. Rather than simply claiming it "doesn't apply here", please provide a policy substantiating your opinion. DonIago (talk) 05:58, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Once again, "Jewish" in this context has nothing to do with his religious views, only his ethnicity, and thus WP:BLPCAT is not being affected. We're not talking his beliefs or philosophy; its a simple statement of geneology that is stated in the article. Is there a Wiki policy that regulates categorizing people by ethnicity? If so, this is my first time running into it, and I've been doing this for a few years.
Also, apologies for the overly bold editing. I'm really not trying to edit war over this, but please take a moment to read my statements and try to understand my position.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 06:22, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the apology; it is appreciated! I understand your position, but I've been in multiple debates regarding ethnicity and religion here (Talk:Bernie Sanders probably being the most recent) and I think it is best to err on the side of caution with these things. Whether talking about religion or ethnicity, with regards to a WP:BLP in particular I think we really need a source indicating that the subject has self-identified as such.
Might be worth reaching out to relevant projects (or possibly WP:3O, though I don't think we're quite there yet) to see if we can get input from additional editors. DonIago (talk) 06:48, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sure. For what it's worth, I'm an Orthodox Jew with some background in Reform, so I have some firsthand knowledge, but I'm perfectly willing to cede to someone with more expertise in this field.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 06:57, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your understanding. You're welcome to reach out to the projects listed at the top of this page to get additional opinions if you'd like. DonIago (talk) 13:45, 14 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

May-December romance?

edit

When he was 22, he dated a lady who was 30. To me, this does not seem to qualify as a "May-December" romance. Your thoughts? Seaphoto 18:30, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're right. If anything, that's a May-June.--206.21.166.95 21:47, 21 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bro, it's less than a decade. ChesterG (talk) 10:58, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Acting vs music career

edit

The first paragraph in the Career section says, "Despite leaving the band for an acting career...." However, I'm not sure that this is an accurate statement. His first major role as Max Fischer in Rushmore happened four years before his band Phantom Planet's CD The Guest was released, and their subsequent tour. Perhaps this paragraph needs reworked? --68.33.67.139 03:35, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It says 'the band he is in' as Phantom Planet, though as their wiki page shows he is an ex member. This article also states his current band/solo project as Coconut Records. I dont have a profile to edit with so maybe someone can fix this in the official wiki way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.159.19.51 (talk) 03:20, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Picture...

edit

Ok the picture is obviously one some fangirls took with him and needs to be changed to a publicity photo or at least something professional--GeddyIsGodYYZ 17:40, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed wholeheartedly. Anyone out there know of any pictures that would be appropriate here? Needed badly. Czoller 23:18, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
there are a couple of (not very good) pictures tagged as "public" in flickr, he's alone in those, i'll change it.Yamanbaiia 13:32, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I say leave the picture. It's hilarious. Love: One of the two chicks in the picture. 19:52, 21 October 2007

Trivia

edit

Much of the "trivia" listed here was emblematic (until I deleted it) of exactly why trivia sections are frowned upon. Half of the trivia was blatant advertising for brands of restaurants, food and websites. Stupid. Robotempire 14:36, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I met him today in the Tompkin's Square Park Dog Run. He has a large French Bulldog, who may be named Buddy. He said they live in the East Village in NYC. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.173.69.125 (talk) 02:34, 11 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Phantom Planet

edit

Jason was a founding member of Phantom Planet. Shouldn't that be added? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mynameisjimi (talkcontribs) 23:54, 24 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Career

edit

The article says that Jason is in the video for "It's all about the Benjamins, Rock Remix" but I don't believe that this is the case. Could we get a citation or something for this? Nels Beckman (talk) 11:57, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hotel Chevalier peer review

Editors and watchers of this article might be interested to comment in the peer review of the article on Hotel Chevalier, the 2007 short film in which Schwartzman starred. Mahalo,  Skomorokh  16:00, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Non-notable minor children

edit

The names and identifying information of this actor's children have been removed from the article per WP:BLPNAME and the following diffs: [1]; [2]. -- WV 00:11, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

And I've restored them. Open a RFC instead of pointing to a two post conversation. --NeilN talk to me 02:10, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Coconut Records merger

edit

Under Wikipedia's rules, a person does not get multiple distinct articles just because they're known by different names in different fields of endeavour — a person who's notable both as a writer and as a musician does not get two separate articles just because he uses different names for each activity. Coconut Records (musician) does not describe its subject as a band in which Schwartzman is a member, but as a solo project where he's assisted by a rotating lineup of guest contributors — so it doesn't warrant a separate article from his main one, but should be covered in the same place as his writing/directing work. For a similar example, we do not maintain a separate article about each individual project name that Will Oldham has used on different albums — we maintain one article about Oldham himself, and each of his stage names (Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace Music, etc.) is just a redirect to that one article. Bearcat (talk) 20:35, 27 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose Different projects, the fact that Schwartzman has released two records to critical acclaim warrants it as a separate page. Paul McCartney's project The Fireman has a separate page for example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fireman_(band) CaffeinAddict (talk) 03:39, 29 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. CaffeinAddict, The Fireman features two members. A more apt example would be the fact that Donald Glover does not have a separate page for Childish Gambino, despite releasing two well-received albums and a well-received EP. Further, Ace Enders does not have a separate article for Ace Enders and a Million Different People either, despite that "group" having released two albums. One of his side-projects is currently just him (I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business), but this group previously had several other members before they departed. This situation parrots those of Glover and Enders, and should be treated the same: by merging. Sock (tock talk) 18:47, 9 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support merge. These performers are one and the same. Any decent encyclopedia article (outside of Wikipedia) would simply note that Schwartzman performs under this name, and has released albums in collaboration with other artists. In this interest of reducing content forks, we should discuss one person's career in a single biographical article. --Animalparty! (talk) 22:33, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • query. From Coconut page: "Coconut Records is a Los Angeles, California based indie pop musical solo project by Jason Schwartzman, which began in 2006. cf. From Schwartzman page: "In 2007, he created the indie rock solo act Coconut Records." 2006 or 2007? Mannanan51 (talk) 19:44, 3 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Completing merge in, as discussed above. Klbrain (talk) 15:53, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
