contradiction ?

edit

"her suggestion that the nucleus breaks into several large fragments is not what occurs in nuclear fission" seems to be contradicted by the wiki page on nuclear fission: "nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts (lighter nuclei)" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.183.32.144 (talk) 13:52, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

You are correct in pointing out that contradiction. The original German quote in her 1934 paper reads „daß bei der Beschießung schwerer Kerne mit Neutronen diese Kerne in mehrere größere Bruchstücke zerfallen“. This is consistent with the modern understanding of nuclear fission. I have, accordingly, removed the contradicting statement from the text.
P.S.: While I am a native German speaker and physicist, I'm NOT a member of Miss Noddack's fan club! ;-) -- HH 85.180.183.233 (talk) 20:57, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I am not a native speaker of German or English but to me the intent of mehrere/several usually seems to be "more than two" and this would contradict "Most fissions are binary fissions" in the nuclear fission article. I am not saying she shouldn't be credited for the idea but it does look like she had a more destructive type of break-up process in mind. AlexFekken (talk) 09:19, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

odd bias

edit

this article reads like it was written by the president of her fan club. all the references are to things written by her--surely something is wrong here. if she was a company, i'd say that this article reads like an advertisement, since its entire purpose seems to be to promote her as the world's greatest and most under-appreciated chemist. -69.47.186.226 19:48, 8 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, a "bibliography" section typically contains works authored by the person in question, i.e. primary sources. Hence I see no problem whatsoever arising from what you're complaining about, especially since one of the charms of science is their being based on empiricism and math. So if you happen to find any errors in one of the subject's publications, feel free to publish your research and add a reference to it in the appropriate section of this Wikipedia entry. -- HH 85.180.183.233 (talk) 21:07, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can somebody explain this?

"the detection limit of Noddacks' analytical method could have been 1000 times lower than the 10−9 value reported in their paper,"

I get it she reported a result more/less correct, but not the significance of the detection limit. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 21:21, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Date of death

edit

I cannot find a reliable source stating her date of death. The German wikipedia, as well as numerous other sources such as Encyclopaedea Britannica (http://global.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1757811/Ida-Noddack) and RSC (http://www.rsc.org/education/eic/issues/2009March/ida-noddack-rhenium-nuclear-fission.asp), state that she died on September, 24th.
