Talk:Grimm–Sommerfeld rule

Latest comment: 11 years ago by Axiosaurus in topic Rewrite Jan 2013

The body of this article says only this:

The Grimm-Sommerfeld rule applies for the bond lengths: If the sum of the atomic number is the same, the interatomic distances are the same.

It links to Grimm, which is of course a disambiguation page, then to Sommerfeld, which is also a disambiguation page, then to bond, which is a disambiguation page that begins with stuff about finance (a bond is a debt security). At the word lengths, I'm thinking maybe if a bond that I buy today matures X years from now, then X is the "bond length", but I read on, and find it seems to be about the chemical bond. If I'm right in so surmising, the link should be structured thus: [[chemical bond|bond]]. And if I'm wrong, it still probably should not link to the "bond" disambiguation page. I think it should start by saying the rule is about the chemical bond, so that the lay reader who comes here via special:random will know first whether it's on a subject he or she is interested in, and then say what it says. Now, the sum is the same as what?? Did it mean the sums (plural) are (plural) the same, meaning the same as each other? If so, it should be plural. Furthermore, a bit more context-setting should precede this sentence: saying just which sums of which atomic numbers, etc., before saying their the same as something. Since all these points are perfectly obvious, whoever wrote this must have spent about ten seconds on it. How can anyone link to "bond" without expecting that it will be a disambiguation page? edit

I have rewritten this article to state the versions of the rule in use. Axiosaurus (talk) 13:51, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
