Nominator is no longer editing, their course has ended, the GAN failed, and outstanding article issues remain unresolved.

  • In my reading this is a great beginning on an important topic. I don’t feel it yet satisfies the supplementary DYK policy, rule D7: “an article [...] that is to appear on the front page should appear to be complete and not [a] work in progress.” Fair or not, satisfying that requirement is especially important for an entry falling under existing DS sanctions: a good but incomplete start can create a lot of friction when it’s in the spotlight. Is student peer review still ongoing so a more complete draft might still be forthcoming? Or more input from the instructor? Pinging Ian (Wiki Ed) who is the course contact and with whom I’ve been in touch about student contributions this semester. Ian, any thoughts here? Thanks. • The nominator hasn't edited since December 5th, on which they nominated the article for Good Article status, and the course has ended. However, I am requesting that the nomination not be closed until action can be taken on the GAN, or until December 22 (one week after the course's end), whichever comes first. FYI - I've added a 'globalize' template to the article because I felt it's too focused on the US. This might raise an NPOV concern. Edge3 (talk) 13:34, 17 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Edge3, you also failed the GA nomination, so that's no longer in play. What's needed here is a review with icon and all, after which we proceed as per normal. Given the two templates at the top and the sheer number of "citation needed" notations, unless more work is done, I don't see how this can pass. I do agree it's a good beginning. •   Ok I was hoping we could work with the student editor and WikiEd to progress the entry but as the course has ended and GAN has failed without advancing toward resolving the issues to make this an acceptable entry to feature on Main Page, I’m ticking no as it does not meet D7. I will leave the necessary update with the nominator. Innisfree987 (talk) 04:45, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Article Evaluation edit

The lead section of this article is very strong! From the first sentence, I know that this article will highlight feminism and racism together, specifically within the context of women of color. This section also touches on each of the major sections of the article- intersectionality, racism within feminist movements of different racial/ethnic groups, and solutions to these issues. The paragraph is concise and overall very well written.

One thing that an author has to watch when writing articles related to equity and capturing the nuanced issues of historically underrepresented populations is their tone. In multiple places within the piece, the tone shifts from a neutral tone to one that is accusatory and critical of white women generally. Although I understand (and agree) with the sentiments of the white feminist movement in relation to black and multiracial feminism, Wikipedia is a source for unbiased information. The article is also centered around the feminist movements within the United States, and doesn’t address the work being done internationally. One could fix this by altering the title to “Feminism and racism in the United States,” or adding a section that addresses some of the global perspectives.

Regarding the content of the article, I think that the sources provided to write the article are on topic and contribute positively to the piece, but I think that many of the sources are outdated. Over half of the sources used are over 20 years old, and although the historical context provided in these articles has likely not changed much, I think newer sources could be used to re-write this article and capture the essence of a newer areas of study, such as Black and Multiracial Feminist Theories. Aside from the age of the sources, I think they are all peer-reviewed, reputable sources that offer a wide range of perspectives from women authors of color. There are many statements in the article that are missing citations, so this could be an opportunity to provide recent literature to strengthen and support the information presented.

Overall, I think the article is good, but it needs some improvement to fit in with Wikipedia’s standards. I believe it is very well-written and organized, offering necessary information about the intersection of feminism and racism. However, it should be rewritten to reflect a more neutral tone and including an additional section about feminism and racism in an international context would be valuable in understanding these concepts as global issues. Also, the content that the current articles provide are powerful in representing the voices of women of color; however, many of them are outdated, and some statements made in the article have no citation whatsoever. Finding additional sources from women of color that reflect the topics of conversation can be used to add to missing citations and replace current citation within the article. It seems that not many people are talking about or using this article because of the “multiple issues” alert streamed across the front of the page. Applying the suggestions I provided, for example, to address its shortcomings would help complete this article, allowing for the general public to have access to an article that discusses paramount issues and emerging fields of study.

Hi there! I will be editing this article as a part of a class project and I agree with your criticisms. I intend to edit some instances of word choice to reflect a more encyclopedic tone. Moreover, I would like to change the title to "Feminism and Racism in the United States" to limit the breadth of the article and make the existing content more relevant (as it does not currently delve into international examples of the intersection of feminism and racism). I also intend to specify a section dedicated to historical connections between feminism and racism in the United States as that is the subject I specialize in. Please feel free to share any feedback!
