Overexploitation

An extensive article on overexploitation exists. The subject of that article should be Overexploitation of natural resources. The this article is short and could be easily merged with Overexploitation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.131.95.94 (talk) 03:27, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

As the main writer of overexploitation, I don't agree. Overexploitation is a special case of the exploitation of natural resources. There is a lot of scope for developing this article. It has the potential to be quite an important summary article, including issues like the sustainable exploitation of natural resources, and inventorying the actual and potential exploitation of natural resources on a global scale. The main problem with this article is that it hasn't yet been written. As it stands it is just a sloppy stub. --Epipelagic (talk) 04:02, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't really understand what the authors are trying to convey by using the word "exploitation" versus simply "use". If I know this I believe I may be in a better position to understand this article. --Maria 04:51, 20 November 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mariabrenna (talkcontribs)

Environment and Society Peer Review

It appears that you have done some considerable work on your article. You have links to other Wikipedia articles. Everything is referenced and you have expanded the article in various areas. Most notably you have created a section dedicated to developing countries and their experience with resource extraction activities. The article is definitely improved from its past form. My only concern is the lack of citation on your last three sentences in the “Developing Countries” section. These last three sentences seems to convey your opinion on the subject and avoiding the ‘soap box’ is something to avoid in writing, editing, and modifying Wikipedia articles. If you have a source for these sentences then it appears to be fine to me. I just want to make sure that it is not deleted on you.

If you want to expand the article further there are examples involving the developing world that you might want to include such as rain forest depletion in the Brazilian Amazon, for example. If you have time I would work to include an example of resource exploitation in the developed world, as to display both sides of the coin so to speak. There are many cases of resource exploitation that could be discussed in this context such as the Alberta oil/tar sands development, forestry practices, large scale agriculture, the collapse to the cod fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador, and many others. These are just suggestions to help you develop your own thoughts and direction on developing the article further if you wish or if time permits given this busy time during the academic year. This article has great potential. It was nice to see the effects on local communities although perhaps there could more examples of other communities being devastated by the exploitation of natural resources from multinational companies. Not only does resource exploitation effect developing countries it effects developed countries as well.
A section on different videos or external sources may be beneficial such as a list of documentaries, books, or even related organizations working to help improve the current overexploitation in countries. There could also be a section of government laws and regulations that try to prevent these effects.
Lastly, there is always room for more references and perhaps a discussion section on more sustainable options, overall great improvements!

19th century?

Certainly many natural resources were being exploited well before the 19th century. E.g. the Mediterranean region was deforested several millenia ago. -- 92.224.245.21 (talk) 07:54, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
